Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Blocking of Cell Proliferation, Cytokines Production and Genes Expression Following Administration of Cordyceps sinensis in the Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluids Cells. Proceedings of international Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 44-64, 1999.-Cordyceps sinensis is a major parasitic fungus on larva of Lepidoptera. It is one of the well know fungi used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment asthma, lung and kideney diseases. Many fungi belonging to the genus Cordyceps have been demonstrated to produce natural products with various biological activities. Reported biological activities of genus cordyceps include:(a)inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis;(b)enhancement of cell differentiation;(c)restruction of cytoskeleton;(d)inhibition of protein kinase activity;(e)antitumor activity on bladder, colon, lung carcinoma as well as fibroblastoma;(f)inhibition of the infection and revers transciptase activity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1; and(g) inhibition of methylation of nucleic acid. Thus, it is suggested that the extracts of Cordyceps sp. Contain antitumor, antiviral, and many other biological activities. In our previous studies, we proved that C. sinensis contains the antitumor and immunomodulatory agents. In the present studies, effects of C. sinensis on bronchoalveolar lavage fluids(BAL)cells were demonstrated. The crude methanolic extracts of C. sinensis were fractionated into 15 fractions by silica gel column chromatography. Effects of various fraction on BAL cells proliferation and lipopolysaccharide(LPS) stimulated interleukin-1β(IL-8),platelet activating factor(PAF), interleukin-6(IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and interleukin-8(IL-8) production on BAL cells were determined. The result indicated that the CS-19-22 fraction suppressed BAL cells proliferation activated by LPS. The median inhibitory concentration(IC50) was 6㎍/ml. The CS-19-22 fraction also decreased IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-αand IL-8 production. The results of revers transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) demonstrated that the CS-19-22 fraction did not affect IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-α,and IL-8 mRNAs expression in BAL cells activated by LPS. By contrast, it inhibited the IL-10 mRNA expression but enhanced IFN-γand IL-12 mRNAs expression in activated BAL cells. Moreover, the CS-19-22 fraction blocked PAF-induced platelet aggregation. It is unlikely that cytotoxicity was involved. Because no cell deths were observable. We hypothesize that inhibitory mechanisms of CS-19-22 on BAL cells proliferation may be related to the impairments of gene expression and production of cytokines in BAL cells. The explanation of C. sinensis antiasthma function may involved the following(1)C.sinenesis contained immunomodulatory agents that stimulated IFN-γand IL-12 expression in TH1cells.(2)Enhanced secretion of IFN-γand IL-12 will inhibit the Tγcells immune responses Ex. Decreasing of IL-6 and IL-10 production.(3) The impairments of cytokines production in TH2 cells suppressed th BAL cells proliferation then more cytokines production Ex.IL-1β,PAF,IL-6,TNF-αand IL-8 in activated BAL cells were decreased. (4)The suppression of TH2cells immune responses will inhibit the growth and differentiation of B cells then IgE production will be decreased. (5)Reduced production of IgE will decreased asthma attack occurring in individuals. However, the results of the present study suggested that C. sinensis may also have acted to treat asthma in part by inhibiting BAL cells proliferation and cytokine gene expression and production. Future, experiments with treatment of animals with asthma with C. sinensis will be necessary to defined whether C. sinensis can reduce asthma injury. Plans are underway for the isolation of pure principal growth inhibitors and their mechanisms of action are subjected for further study.

        Yingmei Wang,Shiqian Zhang,Lihui Wei,Zhongqiu Lin,Xinyu Wang,Jianliu Wang,Keqin Hua,Manhua Cu,Jiandong Wang,Shixuan Wang,Wen Di,Yudong Wang,Ruifang An,Mingrong Xi,Ruixia Guo,Qi Zhou,Xing Xie,Fengxia X 대한부인종양학회 2020 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.31 No.4

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratorysyndrome coronavirus 2 has rapidly spread globally. Cancer patients are at a higher risk ofbeing infected with the coronavirus and are more likely to develop severe complications, ascompared to the general population. The increasing spread of COVID-19 presents challengesfor the clinical care of patients with gynecological malignancies. Concerted efforts should beput into managing gynecological malignancies in an orderly manner by strictly implementingthe measures that are specifically developed for controlling the spread of COVID-19. We havedrafted Recommendations on Management of Gynecological Malignancies during the COVID-19 Pandemicbased on our experience on controlling COVID-19 pandemic in China. We recommendthat patients with gynecological malignancies should be managed in hierarchical andindividualized manners in combination with local conditions related to COVID-19. Medicalcare decision should be balanced between controlling COVID-19 pandemic spread and timelydiagnosis and treatment for gynecologic oncology patients.

Cerium vanadate and reduced graphene oxide composites for lithium-ion batteries

        Wang, Wan Lin,Jang, Jaewon,Nguyen, Van Hiep,Auxilia, Francis Malar,Song, Hayong,Jang, Kyunghoon,Jin, En Mei,Lee, Gab-Yong,Gu, Hal-Bon,Ham, Moon-Ho Elsevier 2017 Journal of Alloys and Compounds Vol.724 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>There has been a significant interest in the development of novel anode materials that can solve the problems of lithium plating and dendrite formation during the discharge-charge process, thus ensuring safety in Li-ion batteries. We synthesized tetragonal CeVO4 as an alternative to graphite, the active material in commercial Li-ion batteries, via a hydrothermal reaction; CeVO4 has lower lithium insertion potentials of 1.0 and 1.5 V versus Li+/Li compared to those of lithium titanium oxide. In order to overcome the drawbacks of the metal oxide, such as low electrical conductivity and volume change upon cycling, CeVO4/RGO composites were synthesized by mixing CeVO4 uniformly with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) via a solid-state reaction. The CeVO4/RGO composites exhibited improved cycling performance and rate capability, with relatively low charging potential of 1.35 V and high power density of 235 W g−1 at 10 wt% RGO, as compared to the pure CeVO4. Our results suggest that the CeVO4/RGO composites have great potential for use as an anode in lithium ion batteries with high power density and excellent safety.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Cerium vanadate and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites were synthesized. </LI> <LI> CeVO4/RGO composites showed improved cycling performance and rate capability. </LI> <LI> CeVO4/RGO composites had low charging potential of 1.35 V. </LI> <LI> CeVO4/RGO composites exhibited high power density of 234 W g−1. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • A new conjugate gradient method for dynamic load identification of airfoil structure with randomness

        Lin J. Wang,Jia H. Li,You X. Xie 국제구조공학회 2023 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.88 No.4

In this paper, a new modified conjugate gradient (MCG) method is presented which is based on a new gradient regularizer, and this method is used to identify the dynamic load on airfoil structure without and with considering random structure parameters. First of all, the newly proposed algorithm is proved to be efficient and convergent through the rigorous mathematics theory and the numerical results of determinate dynamic load identification. Secondly, using the perturbation method, we transform uncertain inverse problem about force reconstruction into determinate load identification problem. Lastly, the statistical characteristics of identified load are evaluated by statistical methods. Especially, this newly proposed approach has successfully solved determinate and uncertain inverse problems about dynamic load identification. Numerical simulations validate that the newly developed method in this paper is feasible and stable in solving load identification problems without and with considering random structure parameters. Additionally, it also shows that most of the observation error of the proposed algorithm in solving dynamic load identification of deterministic and random structure is respectively within 11.13%, 20%.

      • Numerical study on the impact response of SC walls under elevated temperatures

        Lin Wang,Weiyi Zhao,Caiwei Liu,Qinghong Pang 국제구조공학회 2023 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.46 No.3

A thermal-mechanical coupling finite element model of the steel-plate concrete composite (SC) wall is established, taking into account the strain rate effect and variation in mechanical and thermal properties under different temperatures. Verifications of the model against previous fire test and impact test results are carried out. The impact response of the SC wall under elevated temperatures is further investigated. The influences of the fire exposure time on the impact force and displacement histories are discussed. The results show that as the fire exposure time increases, the deflection increases and the impact resistance decreases. A formula is proposed to calculate the reduction of the allowable impact energy considering the fire exposure time.

      • Role of Nucleation-Promoting Factors in Mouse Early Embryo Development

        Wang, Qiao-Chu,Liu, Jun,Wang, Fei,Duan, Xing,Dai, Xiao-Xin,Wang, Teng,Liu, Hong-Lin,Cui, Xiang-Shun,Sun, Shao-Chen,Kim, Nam-Hyung Cambridge University Press 2013 Microscopy and microanalysis Vol.19 No.3

<B>Abstract</B><P>During mitosis nucleation-promoting factors (NPFs) bind to the Arp2/3 complex and activate actin assembly. JMY and WAVE2 are two critical members of the NPFs. Previous studies have demonstrated that NPFs promote multiple processes such as cell migration and cytokinesis. However, the role of NPFs in development of mammalian embryos is still unknown. Results of the present study show that the NPFs JMY and WAVE2 are critical for cytokinesis during development of mouse embryos. Both JMY and WAVE2 are expressed in mouse embryos. After injection of JMY or WAVE2 siRNA, all embryos failed to develop to the morula or blastocyst stages. Moreover, using fluorescence intensity analysis, we found that the expression of actin decreased, and multiple nuclei were observed within a single cell indicating that NPFs-induced actin reduction caused the failure of cell division. In addition, injection of JMY and WAVE2 siRNA also caused ARP2 degradation, indicating that involvement of NPFs in development of mouse embryos is mainly through regulation of ARP2/3-induced actin assembly. Taken together, these data suggested that WAVE2 and JMY are involved in development of mouse embryos, and their regulation may be through a NPFs-Arp2/3-actin pathway.</P>
