We continue the study of power-Armendariz rings over IFP rings, introducing $k$-power Armendariz rings as a generalization of power-Armendariz rings. Han et al. showed that IFP rings are 1-power Armendariz. We prove that IFP rings are 2-power Armendariz. We moreover study a relationship between IFP rings and $k$-power Armendariz rings under a condition related to nilpotency of coefficients.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a benign mucin producing tumor of the peritoneum which is usually diagnosed using a laparotomy. It is uncommon to find a case of pseudomyxoma peritonei which has been diagnosed using a peritoneoscopy in Korea; there are only two cases reported in the literature. We recently experienced a case of pseudomyxoma peritonei in a 61 year old woman who manifested a typical case using a peritoneoscopy. Thick, jelly-like materials were adherent to polypoid nodular masses of the parietal peritoneum, which originated from the mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of an ovary. In this report we discuss the case with relevant review of the literature.

Primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma of the liver is a rare tumor, with fewer than 70 previously reported cases. There was only one case reported in Korea. We present the case of a 54-year-old man who presented with a mass in the right hepatic lobe on CT scan. Percutaneous biopsy was consistent with leiomyosarcoma. The patient was treated successfully by right lobectomy, and has been disease free for 19 months. We report the case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the liver with review of relevant literatures.
Tristetraprolin regulates expression of VEGF and tumorigenesis in human colon cancer

Abstract

Tristetraprolin (TTP) is an AU‐rich element‐binding protein that regulates mRNA stability. Here, we report that TTP suppress the growth of human colon cancer cells both in vivo and in vitro by regulating of the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). TTP protein expression in human colonic tissues was markedly decreased in colonic adenocarcinoma compared with in normal mucosa and adenoma. VEGF expression was higher in colonic adenocarcinoma than in normal mucosa and adenoma. Specific inhibition of TTP expression by RNA‐interference increased the expression of VEGF in cultured human colon cancer cells, and TTP overexpression markedly decreased it. In addition, elevated expression of TTP decreased the expression level of luciferase linked to a 3′ terminal AU‐rich element (ARE) of VEGF mRNA. Colo320/TTP cells overexpressing TTP grew slowly in vitro and became tumors small in size when xenografted s.c into nude mice. These findings demonstrate that TTP acts as a negative regulator of VEGF gene expression in colon cancer cells, suggesting that it can be used as novel therapeutic agent to treat colon cancer.

Efficient adsorption of sulfide gas using porous zeolite powder
Lee Sang-hwa,Jeon Young Pyo,Lee Young Jun,La Yunju,Song Jun Yong,Park Yong Yeol,Lee Eun Jung,Jeon Ok Sung,Park Sang Yoon,Yoo Young Joon,Yang Keun-Hyeok 한국물리학회 2021 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.79 No.12
We prepared zeolite 13× beads and 10% zeolite 13× bead-embedded water-permeable blocks using porous zeolite powder. The difference in the surface state and pore structure of the zeolite powder and bead was analyzed through scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller measurements. The process for making zeolite beads partially damaged their surface. Furthermore, the pore structure of the zeolite beads changed from micropores to a mixture of micro- and mesopores. The sulfur oxide ( SOx) adsorption efficiency of zeolite powder, beads, and blocks was evaluated. The initial SOx adsorption efficiency of zeolite beads decreased after washing ten times, but the increase in SOx concentration after initial adsorption was very small. The SOx adsorption efficiency of the block was very high even after washing ten times. These results indicate that the block is promising for applications requiring the adsorption of harmful gases such as SOx and NOx.

Purpose: To investigate the outcomes of patients with spinal metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), who were treated by stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 23 patients who underwent SBRT from October 2008 to August 2012 for 36 spinal metastases from HCC. SBRT consisted of approximately 2 fractionation schedules, which were 18 to 40 Gy in 1 to 4 fractions for group A lesions (n = 15) and 50 Gy in 10 fractions for group B lesions (n = 21). Results: The median follow-up period was 7 months (range, 2 to 16 months). Seven patients developed grade 1 or 2 gastrointestinal toxicity, and one developed grade 2 leucopenia. Compression fractures occurred in association with 25% of the lesions, with a median time to fracture of 2 months. Pain relief occurred in 92.3% and 68.4% of group A and B lesions, respectively. Radiologic response (complete and partial response) occurred in 80.0% and 61.9% of group A and B lesions, respectively. The estimated 1-year spinal-tumor progression-free survival rate was 78.5%. The median overall survival period and 1-year overall survival rate were 9 months (range, 2 to 16 months) and 25.7%, respectively. Conclusion: SBRT for spinal metastases from HCC is well tolerated and effective at providing pain relief and radiologic response. Because compression fractures develop at a high rate following SBRT for spinal metastases from primary HCC, careful follow up of the patient is required.

Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FLHCC) is a distinct variant of ordinary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is very rare in the Orient. Contrary to ordinary HCC, the FLHCC has very good prognosis and usually occurs in adolescents and young adults without sexual preference. In addition, it is rarely associated with liver cirrhosis and hepatitis B virus. The FLHCC presents a high resectability rate. Most cases of FLHCC have been reported in the Western countries and only nine cases have been reported in the Orient. We present here a case of FLHCC observed in a 48 year old man. The patient had no subjective symptoms when the tumor was revealed by ultrasonography. The patient had many ch'arateristics of FLHCC (i.e,, no association with HBV or HCV, normal range of alphafetoprotein, no evidence of cirrhosis). However, he was older than average-aged patient with FLHCC. The tumor was removed by right antero-inferior segmententomy of the liver and diagnosed as FLHCC. To our knowledge, this report is the fast case in Korea.
