The purpose of this study was to analyze risk of falls between elderly people and college students. The subjects of this study were 25 people aged 70 years or older and 17 college students located in Asan. We measured sensory, integrated balance, nervous, musculoskeletal system and HQR by FRA system (Inbody, Korea). The results of measurement showed significant differences in sensory system (p<.01), integrated balance (p<.001), nervous system (p<.001), and musculoskeletal system (p<.001) between groups. These results suggest that aging makes difference of function of these systems. In our view, counterplans need to be implemented, including exercise intervention to prevent decreases of fall risk,

Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a tick-borne disease characterized by high fever, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and multiple organ failure and is caused by a novel bunyavirus. Human-to-human transmission has been reported previously, but the mode of transmission has not been clarified thoroughly. Study design: We identified a case of a 73-year-old woman with SFTS and performed a semi-quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR (real-time RT-PCR) assay on her blood, tracheal aspirate, gastric aspirate and urine to detect SFTS virus (SFTSV). Results: During 7-day hospitalization, all the serum samples showed positive Ct values lower than 35 in both the S and M segments, suggesting the presence of the SFTSV RNA. After initiation of plasma exchange, serum SFTSV load markedly decreased, but still remained positive. The SFTS viral RNA was also detected in other body fluids, including tracheal aspirate and gastric aspirate.

Acute hepatitis associated with Q fever is rare. Clinician awareness is key for early diagnosis. It can be treated well with macrolides, and symptoms and antibody titers decrease in weeks or months according to the treatment regimen. Successful therapy is accompanied by reduced erythrocyte sedimentation rate, correction of anemia, and resolution of hyperglobulinemia. The risk of chronic Q fever is high if symptoms and antibody titers persist during long-time follow-up testing. Here we report a case of a 54-year-old male with acute Q fever and hepatitis. He complained of fever and headaches and presented with elevated ALT levels around 400 IU/L at admission. Liver biopsy revealed compact fibrin-ring granulomas. He recovered from the acute hepatitis after one week of ciprofloxacin therapy. However, although the patient remained asymptomatic 8 months after completing treatment, his phase 1 and 2 antibody titers remained high. We are unable to determine the disease stage; that is, whether the acute stage was completely resolved due to high titer of antibody.
유자와 탱자 과피 에탄올 추출물의 MCF-7 유방암 세포에 대한 항암 활성

본 연구는 MCF-7 유방암 세포에 대한 유자(CJP)와 탱자(PTP) 과피 추출물의 항암 활성과 환경호르몬에 의해 유도된 암세포의 증식 억제 효과에 대하여 조사하였다. CJP와 PTP를 300 ㎎/㎖ 농도에서 72시간 처리하였을 경우, 암세포의 성장을 저해하였고 세포사멸을 유도하였다. MCF-7 유방암세포의 형태학적 변화는 CJP와 PTP를 500 ㎎/㎖ 농도에서 72시간 처리하였을 경우 관측되었고 세포사멸은 capase-3의 활성화에 의하여 유도되었다. 환경호르몬에 의해 유도된 MCF-7 유방암 세포의 증식은 CJP와 PTP의 처리로 인하여 농도 의존적으로 감소하였으며, 300 ㎎/㎖ 농도에서는 대조군과 비교하였을 때 각각 70%와 80% 이상 감소하였다. In this study, anti-cancer activities of peel of Citrus junos (CJP) and Poncirus trifoliata (PTP) on MCF-7 breast cancer cells, and anti-proliferative effects of cancer cells induced by environmental hormones were investigated. The ethanol extracts of CJP and PTP inhibited cancer cell growth and induced apoptosis at the concentration over 300 ㎎/㎖ treatment for 72 hr. Morphological change of MCF-7 breast cancer cells were observed treated with the CJP and PTP of 500 ㎎/㎖ concentration for 72 hr, and apoptosis was induced by activation of caspase-3. The proliferation of MCF-7 breast cancer cells was decreased in a dose-dependent manner treated with various concentration of CJP and PTP, when compared with the control at 300 ㎎/㎖, the proliferation of the MCF-7 breast cancer cells of both extracts was decreased over 70% and 80%, respectively.

본 연구는 탱자(Poncirus trifoliata) 과피의 80% 에탄올 추출물(PTP)에 대한 항산화 활성과 면역 활성을 유자(Citrus junos) 과피 추출물(CJP)과 비교하였다. 총 phenol 함량과 총 flavonoids 함량은 PTP가 각각 60.75±1.15 ㎎/100 g과 33.75±0.15 ㎎/100 g이었으며, 이는 CJP에 비해 다소 낮았다. PTP의 항산화 활성은 농도 의존적으로 증가하였으며 CJP의 항산화 활성과 비슷하게 나타났다. 면역반응 중 대식세포가 생성하는 NO 생성량을 측정한 결과 CJP와 PTP를 단독으로 처리한 경우와 LPS와 혼합하여 처리한 경우 모두 1㎎/ml까지는 대조구와 비교하여 농도 의존적으로 증가하였으나 고농도에서는 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 비장세포를 이용한 면역세포 증식능에서 CJP와 PTP를 첨가한 경우, 1 ㎎/ml까지는 대조구와 비교하여 농도 의존적으로 증가하였으나 고농도에서는 감소하였다. In this study, we compared with 80% ethanol extracts from peel of Poncirus trifoliata (PTP) and peel of Citrus junos (CJP) against antioxidant and immune activities. Total phenolics and flavonoids contents in PTP extracts were 60.75±1.15 and 33.75±0.15 ㎎/100 g, respectively, and those were lower than CJP extracts. Antioxidant activities of PTP were increased with the more concentration, and were similar to CJP. Antioxidant activities of PTP were increased with increasing of concentration, and were similar to those of CJP. The NO production in macrophage cell lines were increased in a dose-dependent manner, until 5 ㎎/ml of CJP and 1 ㎎/ml of PTP compared with control cells, but decreased at higher concentrations. The proliferation of mouse spleen cells were increased in a dose-dependent manner, until 1 ㎎/ml of CJP and PTP compared with control cells but decreased at higher concentrations. The NO production in macrophage cell lines treated with PTP and CJP were increased in a dose-dependent manner, compared with untreated control cells until the concentrations of 1~5 ㎎/ml (CJP) and 1 ㎎/ml (PTP) but decreased at higher concentrations than that. The proliferation of mouse spleen cells treated with PTP and CJP were increased in a dose-dependent manner, compared with untreated control cells until the concentration of 1 mg/ml but decreased at higher concentrations than that.
광역학요법 후 발생한 맥락막비관류로 인한 급격한 시력저하 1예

Purpose: We report a case of visual recovery in 11 weeks after acute, severe visual acuity decrease without significant fundus change following photodynamic therapy (PDT) for occult choroidal neovascularization (CNV) related to age-related macular degeneration. Methods: A 79-year-old female patient visited our clinic because of decreased vision which had developed 1 week previously in her left eye. Best corrected visual acuity was 0.4 in the left eye. On fundus examination, there were multiple drusen around the fovea, hyperpigmentation and irregular elevation of retinal pigment epithelium, and serous pigment epithelium detachment on the macula. Fluorescein angiogram showed stippled hyperfluorescence with indistinct border in the early phase and hyperfluorescence due to the leakage from CNV of diffuse type ooze in the late phase. ICG angiogram showed focal hyperfluorescence in the mid and late phases. PDT with verteporfin was performed for regression of CNV. The day after PDT, visual acuity decreased to counting fingers at 20 cm and on fundus examination, there was no increase of serous pigment epithelium detachment or subretinal hemorrhage, but only mild retinal edema in the inferonasal area to the fovea. Fluorescein angiogram and ICG angiogram showed only round-shaped hypofluorescence due to choroidal nonperfusion localized to the PDT site. Eleven weeks after PDT, choroidal circulation returned to normal and visual acuity was 0.6. Results: Acute, severe visual acuity decrease after PDT can be developed by choroidal nonperfusion and can be recovered with the improvement of choroidal perfusion.

Rectus sheath hematoma (RSH) is a rare condition that`s caused by a sudden disruption of the deep epigastric vessels or direct damage to the rectus abdominis muscle. This condition is associated with old age, childbirth, abdominal surgery, severe cough, severe sneezing, anticoagulation therapy and/or coagulation disorders. RSH is characterized by abdominal pain and an abdominal mass, so that this is often misdiagnosed as a surgical condition such as appendicitis, intraabdominal abscess, torsion of the ovary and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm; this can lead to unnecessary surgery. Thus, we have to be cautious not to miss RSH when a patient with predisposing factors is suffered from abdominal pain and an abdominal mass. We report here on a case of rectus sheath hematoma that was induced by severe cough in a patient who was taking warfarin. (Tuberc Respir Dis 2008;65: 212-215)
