A 3 month-old male dog with clinical signs of anorexia, soft stool, ocular and nasal discharge, cough and respiratory distress was submitted to the Cheju National University for diagnosis. At necropsy, tan to purple-red sublobar to lobar consolidations were presented in apical and cardiac lobe of lung. Histopathologically, severe diffuse bronchointerstitial pneumonia with necrotic bronchiolitis was noted in the lung. The demyelinating encephalitis and astrocytosis were presented in cerebellum and cerebrum. Numerous round, ovoid or cluster of tachyzoites were also identified in alveolar lumen, alveolar wall and cytoplasm of macrophages in the lung. The orgasnisms were demonstrated as Toxoplasma (T) gondii by immunohistochemistry. Intranuclear or intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusion bodies were seen in the glial cells of the cerebellum. Canine distemper virus (CDV) specific antigens were demonstrated in the cerebellum by the immunohistochemistry. In our knowledge, this is believed to be the first confirmed report of co-infection of CDV and T gondii in dog in Korea.

A total of 41 Salmonella (S.) strains were isolated from pigs suffered with severe watery diarrhea and were tried to identify by both matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. Fibrinous exudate and ulceration in the large intestine were prevalent in gross observation, and variable degrees of enteritis were observed in the histology of large intestines. Subsequent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses demonstrated that 41 strains were identified as S. Typhimurium (39 strains), though 2 stains were failed to identify. Further identification was performed using both direct smear and protein extraction method by MALDI-TOF MS analyses. In terms of extraction methods, 100% (41/41) of isolates were identified to species level of S. spp. Whereas only 43.9% (18/41) were identified to species level using the direct method. These results thus suggest that rapid and accurate diagnosis of porcine salmonellosis can be guaranteed by MALDI-TOF MS combined with protein extraction method.

Background. Clinical application of encapsulated islet transplantation is hindered by low biocompatibility of capsules leading to pericapsular fibrosis and decreased islet viability. To improve biocompatibility, we designed a novel chitosan-coated alginate capsules and compared them to uncoated alginate capsules. Methods. Alginate capsules were formed by crosslinking with BaCl2, then they were suspended in chitosan solution for 10 minutes at pH 4.5. Xenogeneic islet transplantation, using encapsulated porcine islets in 1,3-galactosyltransferase knockout mice, and allogeneic islet transplantation, using encapsulated canine islets in beagles, were performed without immunosuppressants. Results. The chitosan-alginate capsules showed similar pore size, islet viability, and insulin secretory function compared to alginate capsules, in vitro. Xenogeneic transplantation of chitosan-alginate capsules demonstrated a trend toward superior graft survival (P = 0.07) with significantly less pericapsular fibrosis (cell adhesion score: 3.77 +/- 0.41 vs 8.08 +/- 0.05; P < 0.001) compared to that of alginate capsules up to 1 year after transplantation. Allogeneic transplantation of chitosan-alginate capsules normalized the blood glucose level up to 1 year with little evidence of pericapsular fibrotic overgrowth on graft explantation. Conclusions. The efficacy and biocompatibility of chitosan-alginate capsules were demonstrated in xenogeneic and allogeneic islet transplantations using small and large animal models of diabetes. This capsule might be a potential candidate applicable in the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus patients, and further studies in nonhuman primates are required.

Lipid-Core Plaque Assessed by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Procedure Related Microvascular Injury
Hyoung-Mo Yang,Myeong-HoYoon,Hong-Seok Lim,Kyoung-Woo Seo,Byoung-JooChoi,So-YeonChoi,Gyo-SeungHwang,Seung-Jea Tahk 대한심장학회 2019 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.49 No.11
Background and Objectives: Microvascular damage due to distal embolization during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is an important cause of periprocedural myocardial infarction. We assessed the lipid-core plaque using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and microvascular dysfunction invasively with the index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) and evaluated their relationship. Methods: This study is pilot retrospective observational study. We analyzed 39 patients who performed NIRS before and after PCI, while fractional flow reserve, thermo-dilution coronary flow reserve (CFR) and IMR were measured after PCI. The maximum value of lipid core burden index (LCBI) for any of the 4-mm segments at the culprit lesion (culprit LCBI4mm) was calculated at the culprit lesion. We divided the patients into 2 groups using a cutoff of culprit LCBI4mm ≥500. Results: Mean pre-PCI LCBI was 333±196 and mean post-PCI IMR was 20±14 U. Post-PCI IMR was higher (15.6±7.3 vs. 42.6±17.6 U, p<0.001) and post-PCI CFR was lower (3.7±2.2 vs. 2.1±1.0, p=0.029) in the high LCBI group. Pre-PCI LCBI was positively correlated with post-PCI IMR (ρ=0.358, p=0.025) and negatively correlated with post-PCI CFR (ρ=−0.494, p=0.001). The incidence of microvascular dysfunction (IMR ≥25 U) was higher in the high LCBI group (9.4% vs. 85.7%, p<0.001). However, there were no significant differences in the incidences of creatine Kinase-MB (9.4% vs. 14.3%, p=0.563) and troponin-I elevation (12.5% vs. 14.3%, p=1.000). Conclusions: A large lipid-core plaque at the ‘culprit’ lesion is observed higher incidence of post-PCI microvascular dysfunction after PCI. Prospective study with adequate subject numbers will be needed.
Multicentric T cell lymphosarcoma in a Jeju native boar
Yang, Hyoung-Seok,Kang, Sang-Chul,Jung, Ji-Youl,Roh, In-Soon,Kim, Dae-Yong,Bae, Jong-Hee,Kim, Jae-Hoon The Korean Society of Veterinary Science 2007 大韓獸醫學會誌 Vol.47 No.2
A 7-year-old Jeju native boar was requested to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of Cheju National University with a clinical signs of anorexia, melena, lethargy and sudden death. At necropsy, four coalescing firm masses were occupied in the abdominal cavity between ventral surface of stomach and pancreas. Individual mass was a yellowish white in color and up to 6 cm in diameter. These masses were not encapsulated and bulged from the cut surface. Liver and spleen were enlarged and pale nodules were presented in these tissues. Some yellowish white nodules up to 5 mm in diameter were scattered in kidneys. Histopathologically, lymphoblastic tumor cells were occupied in the abdominal masses, multifocal areas of liver, kidneys, and spleen. Morphologically lymphoblastic tumor cells were round to oval in shape, and medium to large in size. They had round to oval nuclei, moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm, and many mitotic figures. Immunohistochemistry revealed that tumor cells were CD3-positive and $CD79{\alpha}$-negative, consistent with T-cell lineage. Based on gross, microscopic findings and immunohistochemistry, this case was diagnosed as porcine multi-centric T cell lymphosarcoma. In animals, as in human, the T-cell lymphomas are generally more aggressive than B cell types and respond less well to therapy. In our best knowledge, this is the first report for porcine T cell lymphosarcoma in Korea.
