        Machining of the KSTAR TF coil structure

        The KSTAR Toroidal Field (TF) magnet system consists of 16 TF structures. Each structure must be machined for precise assembly and reducing error field. Dimensions of the structure are a height of 4.5 m and a width of 3.2 m. The allowable tolerance of the structure is ±1 2 mm, and that of the bolt hole for Poloidal Field (PF) coil basement is ±0.5 mm. The final machining of the structure is also important for assembly of the interface structures such as toroidal ring, PF coil structures, and Central Solenoid (CS) structure. Before coil encasing, the inside surface of the structure is machined. Most of the outer surface of the structure, except for the surface of the intercoil structure (ICS), is machined after final welding. In particular, the side surface of an inboard leg, the connection plate of the ICS, the toroidal ring basement, the PF structure basements, shear key holes, and conical bolt holes are precisely machined. Fabrication and assembly tolerances are absorbed by the thickness of the electrical insulation, the spacer of the shear key, and the taper ring of the conical bolt. Six TF coil structures have been assembled and two structures are waiting for assembly. Another three structures are under final machining. A laser tracker is used for three dimensional survey and measurement of the structure.

        마늘대 사일리지 급여가 한우거세우의 성장 및 도체특성에 미치는 영향

        This study was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding or garlic stalk silage on performance and carcass characteristics of Hanwoo steers. Feeding trial was conducted with 27 heads of Hanwoo steers and these animals were divided into two groups control(rice straw) and garlic stalk silage. Animasl consuming rice straw were fed concentrates and rice straw for 22 months from the 5 months of age and animals consuming garlic stalk silage were fed concentrates, rice straw and garlic stalk silage for 22 months from the 5 months of age. Animals fed rice straw and garlic stalk silage were fed 1.34 and 1.47, 1.69 and 1.74, 1.65 and 1.66% concentrates to body weight for the growing period, fattening period and finishing period, respectively. Also, animals fed garlic stalk silage wee offered 0.22 and 0.33% garlic stalk silage to body weight for the fattening and finishing period, respectively. Animals fed rice straw and garlic stalk silage as a roughage sources did not differ in average daily gain during the whole feeding periods. Animals of control group consumed less concentrates and roughage than those fed garlic stalk silage during the whole feeding periods. However, feed efficiency was not significantly different between both treatments. Beef yield including backfat thickness, eye muscle area and carcass weight was slightly lower in the animals fed garlic stalk silage than in the animals fed rice straw even though there were no differences between both treatments. However, beef quality including beef color, fat color, texture, maturity and marbling score was slightly higher in the garlic stalk silage-fed animals than in the animals fed rice straw although there were not statistically different between both treatments. Animals consuming garlic stalk silage was significantly(p<0.05) lower in shear value than those fed rice straw. Amino acid composition including essential amino acid non-essential amino acid was not different between animals fed rice straw and garlic stalk silage. Eye muscle area of animals fed garlic stalk silage contained slightly higher oleic aced, less linoleic acid and arachidonic acid more linolenic acid than that of animals fed rice straw only as a roughage sources. So eye muscle area of animals fed garlic stalk silage contained more mono-unsaturated fatty acid than that of animals fed rice straw and ω6/ω3 ratio was narrower in the animals fed garlic stalk silage than in the animals fed rice straw. Economic income was higher by 20% in the animals fed garlic stalk silage than in the animals fed rice straw. Therefore, It may be concluded that feeding of garlic stalk silage as a roughage sources to steers during the fattening period seems to improve meat quality, fatty acid composition and economic income.

        Cryptococcus性 腦髓膜炎 1例

        A case of cryptococcal meningitis is reported, which occured in a 25-year old female whose chief compaints ware severe headache, vomiting and double vision lasting one month. Neurological examination on admission (September 7, 1973) showed no significant abnormalities except for the bilateral papilledema and subjective horizontal diplopia. Simple skull and chest films including results of specific diagnostic procedures were grossly intact. Cerebrospinal fluid examination disclosed pleocytosis, increased protein, and decreased sugar and chloride, levels which was the finding compatible with those of tuberculous meningitis etc. The subject was treated under the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis. Two weeks after the admisson, direct smear of the spinal fluid showed numerous yeast like cells, and cryptococcus neoformans was confirmed by India ink preparation and culture in Sabouraud's glucose agar. Amphotericin B was administered by slow intravenous drip over a span of several hours starting with 0.25㎎/㎏ of body weight and increasing gradually up to 1.25㎎/㎏ of body weight daily. Clinical improvements of the patient's condition along with disappearance of cryptococcus neoformans in CSF examination were obtained by the treatment with Amphoteric in B injection, although a fall in hemoglobin, hypopotassemia, moderate degree of fever and occasional vomiting were observed as side effects during the course of treatment. Cryptococcus is highly fatal infection caused by cryptococcus neoformans which is a special predilections for the central nervous system. Crytococcosis may also involve the lungs, bones and skin, and occurs with increased frequency in patients with leukemia or lymphomas. This infection is most common in male adult, and the protal entry is the respiratory tract.

      • Sonocatalytical degradation enhancement for ibuprofen and sulfamethoxazole in the presence of glass beads and single-walled carbon nanotubes

        Sonocatalytic degradation experiments were carried out to determine the effects of glass beads (GBs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on ibuprofen (IBP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal using low and high ultrasonic frequencies (28 and 1000kHz). In the absence of catalysts, the sonochemical degradation at pH 7, optimum power of 0.18WmL<SUP>-1</SUP>, and a temperature of 15<SUP>o</SUP>C was higher (79% and 72%) at 1000kHz than at 28kHz (45% and 33%) for IBP and SMX, respectively. At the low frequency (28kHz) H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> production increased significantly, from 10μM (no GBs) to 86μM in the presence of GBs (0.1mm, 10gL<SUP>-1</SUP>); however, no enhancement was achieved at 1000kHz. In contrast, the H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> production increased from 10μM (no SWNTs) to 31μM at 28kHz and from 82μM (no SWNTs) to 111μM at 1000kHz in the presence of SWNTs (45mgL<SUP>-1</SUP>). Thus, maximum removals of IBP and SMX were obtained in the presence of a combination of GBs and SWNTs at the low frequency (94% and 88%) for 60min contact time; however, >99% and 97% removals were achieved for 40 and 60min contact times at the high frequency for IBP and SMX, respectively. The results indicate that both IBP and SMX degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Additionally, the enhanced removal of IBP and SMX in the presence of catalysts was because GBs and SWNTs increased the number of free OH<SUP>?</SUP> radicals due to ultrasonic irradiation and the adsorption capacity increase with SWNT dispersion.

      • A nanosized Ag-silica hybrid complex prepared by γ-irradiation activates the defense response in Arabidopsis

        Silver nanoparticles have antimicrobial activity against many pathogenic microbes. Here, the preparation of a nanosized Ag-silica hybrid complex (NSS) prepared by γ-irradiation is described. The effects of both NSS and reduced Ag nanoparticles (Ag<SUP>0</SUP>) on the growth of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana were tested. The application of 1-10ppm NSS complex improved Arabidopsis growth in soil, whereas 100ppm NSS resulted in weakly curled leaves. In addition, supplementation of Murashige and Skoog (MS) growth medium with 1ppm NSS promoted the root growth of Arabidopsis seedlings, but root growth was inhibited by supplementation with 10ppm NSS. To investigate whether the NSS complex could induce plant defense responses, the expression of pathogenesis-related (PR) genes that are implicated in systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in Arabidopsis plants was examined. PR1, PR2 and PR5 were significantly up-regulated by each application of 10ppm NSS complex or Ag<SUP>0</SUP> to the rosette leaves. Furthermore, pretreatment with the NSS complex induced more pathogen resistance to the virulent pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pst) compared to water treatment in Arabidopsis plants.

        Association Analysis between Five Microsatellite Loci and Litter Size in Small Tail Han Sheep

        The objective of the present study was to explore associations between five microsatellites linked to $Fec^B$ and $FecX^I$ genes and litter size in Small Tail Han sheep. The polymorphisms of five microsatellite loci, OarAE101, BM1329, BMS2508, TGLA54 and TGLA68 were detected in 244 ewes of Small Tail Han sheep. Analysis of association between three microsatellite loci (BMS2508, BM1329 and OarAE101) located in the 10 cM region covering the $Fec^B$ gene (Booroola gene) and litter size in Small Tail Han sheep indicated that BMS2508 had significant effect on litter size in the second parity (p<0.05), but no significant effect on litter size in the first parity (p>0.05), while the other two microsatellite loci had no significant effect on litter size in both the first and the second parity in Small Tail Han sheep (p>0.05). At microsatellite locus BMS2508, least squares means in the second parity of genotypes 101/111 and 99/109 were significantly higher than those of genotypes 99/99, 99/101, 99/111 and 99/115 (p<0.05); least squares mean in the second parity of genotype 101/111 was significantly higher than that of genotypes 109/111 and 111/111 (p<0.05). Results of this study also indicated that two microsatellite loci (TGLA54 and TGLA68) that confined the 28.7 cM region covering the $FecX^I$ gene (Inverdale gene) did not affect litter size in both the first and the second parity in Small Tail Han sheep significantly (p>0.05). The information found in the present study is very important for improving the reproductive performance in sheep breeds by marker assisted selection.

      • Strengthening of alumina by a low thermal expansion glass at surface

        A low thermal expansion glass was melted on the sintered alumina. The molten glass penetrated into the surface region of the alumina along the grain boundaries. Thermal and elastic properties mismatch between the glass-penetrated surface region and the interior of alumina produced residual compression in the surface region during cooling. The glass penetration improved the strength by about 53% and also there was a significantly improvement in the thermal shock resistance of the alumina. The observed enhancement in the strength was found to be almost equal to the residual stress generated as a result of thermal and elastic properties mismatch.
