A 6-year-old spayed female Persian cat presented with a 3-month history of recurrent ulcerative keratitis with noticeable opacification and vascularization of the right cornea. The lesion was nonresponsive to topical antibiotics and to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Ophthalmic examination showed signs of ocular discomfort, such as epiphora and blepharospasm, in the right eye. Biomicroscopic examination revealed an irregular, edematous, vascularized mass with pink to white tissue on the entire cornea and mild conjunctivitis. A tentative diagnosis of feline proliferative eosinophilic keratitis (FPEK) was made on the basis of clinical appearance. Cytologic examination of the cornea showed a mixture of numerous eosinophils and mast cells, which confirmed the original diagnosis of FPEK. The cat was treated with a topical antibiotic-corticosteroid combination, cyclosporine ointment, trifluridine eye drops, and oral Llysine. The clinical signs improved remarkably 18 days after the cat was first examined. The short-term use of corticosteroids and long-term use of cyclosporine and an anti-viral agent resolved the lesion without recurrence of the disease for 1 year.

A 13-year-old neutered female Maltese was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University with 8-month-history of gradually enlarging retrobulbar mass in the right eye. On the ophthalmic examinations, exophthalmos, exposure keratitis, and cataract were observed, and menace response was absent in the eye. The fellow eye was normal except for nuclear sclerosis. On the ocular ultrasonographic evaluation, a mass was identified in retrobulbar and periocular region in the right eye. Exenteration was performed in order to remove the mass. Histopathologic evaluation revealed that most part of the mass was composed of epithelial-like neoplastic cells. Invasion into adipose cells and osseous metaplasia around the mass were also confirmed. Based on the radiologic and histopathologic examination, the mass in the right eye was diagnosed as primary retrobulbar meningioma. Eleven months after the surgery, recurrence was not observed.
Effect of Grid Keratotomy on Indolent Corneal Ulcers in Dogs

A total of 29 eyes (25 dogs: one eye, 2 dogs: both eyes) with indolent corneal ulcer were treated with grid keratotomy from January 2008 to March 2010. The corneal lesions were reevaluated at 7-14 day intervals. The treatments had been repeated until fluorescein dye was not retained on the cornea and the epithelium did not appear to be loosely attached to the stromal layer. The healing rate of the corneal ulcers was 86.2%. The mean healing time (mean ± SD) was 15.9 ± 9.2 days, ranged from 7 to 39 days. The lesions of remaining 4 eyes had deteriorated or not improved for more than 6 weeks. In those cases, 3rd eyelid flap following grid keratotomy was applied. After 2 weeks, all of the eyes healed by the treatment. The results in this study suggest that grid keratotomy could be an excellent choice as an initial treatment for superficial corneal ulcers in dogs. In the cases of recurrence or to promote healing of the lesions, however, 3rd eyelid flap following grid keratotomy is recommended.

N/A Objectives: The glucokinase-glucose sensor concept of physiological glucose recognition by pancreatic beta- cells has developed progressively since the presence of this enzyme in beta-cells was first reported in 1968. It is well known that HIT cells have glucokinase activity and then insulin secretory response according to glucose stimulation, but there are few data about the effect of hormone on insulin secretion and glucokinase in HIT cells. Therefore, we studied the effect of dexamethasone on glucokinase activity, mRNA expression and insulin secretion in HIT cells. Methods: HIT cells were cultured for 24 hours in medium containing 0, 50, or 500 nM dexamethasone, and then the activities of glucokinase was quantitiated using pyridine uncleotide-dependent fluorometric assays. Northern blot analysis of glucokinase mRNS was done. Results: 1) The Vmax and Km of glucokinase in HIT cells were 3.5 μ mol/min/mg protein, 0.77 mM in HIT cells exposed to 7 mM glucose, respectively and the Vmax and Km of hexokinase in HIT cells were 2.64 μmol/ min/mg protein, 0.06 mM, respectively. 2) 24 hours after incubation of HIT cell with dexamethasone 0, 50, 500 mM, the glucokinase activity and insulin secretion were observed: the glucokinase activities were 1.4±0.45(control), 0.87±0.43(50nmol dexarnethasone), 0.13±0.52 uU/mg protein(500 nmol dexamethasone), and insulin secretion were 44.57±4.1(control), 35.50±1.72(50 nmol dexamethasone), 31.62±1.07 ng/mg protein(500 nmol dexamethasone), respectively. 3) Northern analysis revealed that dexamethaxone increase glucokinase mRNA expression according to dexamethasone concentrations 24 hours after incubation of HIT cells with dexamethasone 50 or 500 nM. Conclusion: Our data showed that dexamethasone tended to increase glucokinase mRNS expression, but decrease glucokinase activity and insulin secretion in HIT cells. Thease data suggested that dexamethasone may have an variable effect on transcriptional or posttranslational levels of glucokinase.
수주기반 중소 제조기업의 신속 대응형 생산정보시스템 개발에 관한 연구

This study deals with a quick response production information system(QR-PIS) which applied to rapid growing small and medium-sized manufacturing companies. Although many kinds of production information system are available, the small and medium-sized companies want the system to operate with minimal personnel. So, we studied the success factors of information system and developed quick response production information system based on these success factors. We also showed that our proposed system made it possible to dramatically improve managerial efficiency including reducing information lead-time with minimal personnel.
