Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) has been a major causative agent of food-borne human disease due to consumption of contaminated eggs and poultry meat. To prevent SE infection in poultry, and therefore minimize human infections, vaccination with either killed or live SE vaccine is suggested. We evaluated a newly developed killed bacterin using a representative SE isolate in Korea. Among pool of SE isolates, two highly virulent isolates (the one isolate from chicken, the other from human) were selected by measuring mortality in mouse and chickens administered. The chickens were injected intramuscularly with killed vaccine and were challenged with highly virulent SE strain 3 week after vaccination. The recovered colony count (cfu/g) of spleen and cecal content in the vaccinated groups was reduced compared with those of the unvaccinated control group. The antibody level in the vaccinated groups was higher at 3 week post vaccination. These results indicate that vaccination with killed vaccine was effective in preventing the infection of virulent SE. Further study for a large number of layers should be needed for the effect of egg production, SE shedding in feces, persistence of antibody level.

Iron artifacts were used in combination with organic materials, such as leather and wood, but their original purpose is difficult to figure out because the organic materials have almost disappeared and the iron itself has been severely corroded. Therefore many iron artifacts have been reported as ‘unidentified iron artifacts’. The purpose of this study is to investigate removable iron spikes, which belong to the category of ‘unidentified iron artifacts’, and to infer their function. The shape and function of the removable iron spikes were the same as crampons, which are used to prevent slipping. They helped maintain a stable position during combat, and were also used in rain and snow or when climbing steep places. They could be easily removed. The original shape of the spike shoes can be observed in the Goguryeo tomb murals, and it is presumed that the jinsin of the Joseon dynasty was derived from the spike shoes of Goguryeo. 18 removable iron spikes were found at tombs and other sites in Gyeongsan, Gyeongju,Goryeong, Namwon, Danyang, Seoul, Yongin and Cheongwon in Korea and Liáoníng Sheˇng and Jílín Sheˇng in China. The finds from Goryeong Jisandong and Namwon Wolsanri were first considered to be horse equipment, but it was later confirmed that they were gear that was worn, based on the location of the dapbubyung (a spike positioned on the stirrup footstep) of the stirrup, the size of the hyukgong (the holes for the leash), and the context of deposition. The removable iron spikes were manufactured to be ‘ㄷ’-shaped or ring-shaped. The dapbubyung can be of the swollen type or the splinter (刺) type. ‘ㄷ’-shaped removable iron spikes can be divided into the following types: hooked ring type, ring type and small hole type. The dapbubyung can be further classified according to width (3.5cm). Based on these attributes, removable iron spikes can be classified into five different types, with the different types representing different localities. In addition, according to published reports, the ring type was made in Liáoníng Sheˇng around the 2nd~6th centuries and was transmitted to southern Korea. The ‘ㄷ’type started to be made from around the 3rd century in Korea. The number of artifacts is too small for the temporal and spatial distribution to be discussed, but the strong regionality of removable iron spikes provides insight into the spread of the weapon culture of Goguryeo.
의성 대리리 3호분 출토 쌀겨의 현미경적 분석을 통한 용도 추정

The excavations of Tombs Nos. 2 and 3 in Daeri-ri, Uiseong within the tomb complex on Geumseongsan Mountain revealed grayish-white organic matter of an undetermined shape and use beneath some horse tack. Stereoscopic examination revealed the matter to be decayed rice bran. That the matter was found spread beneath a saddle and the findings of microscopy suggest that the rice bran was used as filler for a saddle cloth that was placed underneath the saddle to reduce the friction between the saddle and the horse. The exact shape and composition of the filler are difficult to verify due to the lack of related organic matter other than the rice bran. Further discovery of rice bran along with horse tack in different situations will provide an opportunity to more closely investigate the precise uses of the rice bran found in ancient tombs.
