      • Sexual Politics and Female Sexuality in Gish Jen’s Typical American

        In Typical American(1991), Jen tells the stories of Ralph Chang and his intellectual family aspiring to make it into America’s middle and upper classes in the 1950s. She portrays women as resistant to sexism at home and in society. In this paper, I address the stories of women, namely, Helen, Ralph’s wife, and, Theresa, his elder sister, pertaining to their relationship with men in striving for their American dreams of individual freedom and autonomy. I argue that through the conflicts between men and women, Jen presents a tension between the self and family, which symbolizes the tension between her birth cultural value of family unity and her adopted cultural value of individual freedom. Calling for bridging the two cultures, Jen conveys that those who ignore one culture or the other are doomed.

        Analytical solution of seismic stability against overturning for a rock slope with water-filled tension crack

        Steep rock slope with water-filled tension crack will happen to overturn around the toe of the slope under seismic loading. This failure type is completely different from the common toppling failure occurring in anti-dipping layered rock mass slopes with steeply dipping discontinuities. This paper presents an analytical approach to determine the seismic factor of safety against overturning for an intact rock mass slope with water-filled tension crack considering horizontal and vertical seismic coefficients. This solution is a generalized explicit expression and is derived using the moment equilibrium approach. A numerical program based on discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) is adopted to validate the analytical results. The parametric study is carried out to adequately investigate the effect of horizontal and vertical seismic coefficients on the overall stability against overturning for a saturated rock slope under two water pressure modes. The analytical results show that vertically upward seismic inertia force or/and second water pressure distribution mode will remarkably decrease the slope stability against overturning. Finally, several representative design charts of slopes also are presented for the practical application.

        Enhanced Production of Human Epidermal Growth Factor under Control of the phoA Promoter by Acetate-tolerant Escherichia coli DB15 in a Chemically Defined Medium

        The phoA expression system is an efficient one and is successfully used in foreign gene expression. In a previous study, it was found that pH during the expression phase had a significant effect on extracellular hEGF production under control of the phoA promoter by Escherichia coli DA19, an acetate-tolerant strain of E. coli DH5α, in a chemically defined medium, but the level of hEGF production was only 75.5 mg/L. E. coli DB15 is another acetate tolerant mutant of DH5α. In the present study, production of hEGF under control of the phoA promoter by DB15 was further investigated. When transition from the growth phase,where phosphate was abundant, to the expression phase where phosphate was limited, was performed based on cell density, the extracellular hEGF reached 165 mg/L, twice that when transition was based on dissolved oxygen. Furthermore, adding 0.22 g/L of CaCl2 during the growth phase, further increased hEGF production to 228 mg/L,which is 3-fold the level produced by DA19 (pAET-8)cultured in the same medium.

      • A novel rechargeable hybrid Na-seawater flow battery using bifunctional electrocatalytic carbon sponge as cathode current collector

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A novel rechargeable hybrid Na-seawater flow battery, using natural seawater as an abundant source of active materials, have been developed recently. In this kind of metal-air battery, electrochemical oxygen evolution and reduction are the two key processes taking place during charging and discharging, respectively. In general, powder form of electrocatalysts are attached to the current collectors by using inactive and insulating polymer binders, which inevitably impede the overall performance, and increase the manufacturing costs of the battery. Therefore, a simple way to construct the 3D current collector combined with efficient electrocatalytic activities remains a big challenge. In this work, a 3D macroporous carbon sponge is prepared by the direct carbonization of commercially available polymer “Magic Eraser”. The obtained carbon sponge has interconnected macroporous open 3D scaffold structure and exhibits good flexibility and tailorability. The 3D macroporous carbon sponge shows good bifunctional electrocatalytic activities toward oxygen evolution and reduction reactions in seawater. The fabricated hybrid Na-seawater flow battery using 3D macroporous carbon sponge as cathode current collector displays small charge-discharge voltage gap with high voltage efficiency, excellent rechargeability, and long-term cycling stability.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A carbon sponge is prepared by carbonization of commercially available “Magic Eraser”. </LI> <LI> The carbon sponge shows bifunctional electrocatalytic activities toward OER and ORR. </LI> <LI> The carbon sponge can be used as current collector in hybrid Na-seawater flow battery. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Functional Evaluation of Transplanted Kidneys with Reduced Field-of-View Diffusion-Weighted Imaging at 3T

        Objective: To determine the feasibility of reduced field-of-view diffusion-weighted imaging (rFOV DWI) with multi-b values to detect functional variability in transplanted kidneys. Materials and Methods: Using a 3T MRI scanner, multi-b rFOV DWI of transplanted kidney or native kidney was performed in 40 renal transplantation recipients and 18 healthy volunteers. The patients were stratified, according to an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR): Group 1, eGFR ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m2; Group 2, eGFR ≥ 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 and < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2; Group 3, eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2. Total apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCT), perfusion-free ADC (ADCD) and perfusion fraction (FP) of kidneys were calculated and compared among the four groups. Correlations between the imaging results and eGFR were assessed. Results: All volunteers had eGFR ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, while 16, 16, and 8 patients were included in Groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. In the renal cortex, ADCT was higher in Group 1 ([1.65 ± 0.13] x 10-3 mm2/s) than Group 3 ([1.44 ± 0.11] x 10-3 mm2/s) (p < 0.05), and the inter-group differences of FP values were significant (all p < 0.05) (0.330 ± 0.024, 0.309 ± 0.019, 0.278 ± 0.033, and 0.250 ± 0.028 for control group, Groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively). Renal cortical ADCT, ADCD, FP, and renal medullary ADCT and FP correlated positively with eGFR (r = 0.596, 0.403, 0.711, 0.341, and 0.323, respectively; all p < 0.05). When using 0.278 as the cutoff value, renal cortical FP had a sensitivity of 97.1% and a specificity of 66.7% for predicting decreased renal function. Conclusion: Multi-b rFOV DWI presents transplanted kidneys with high resolution, which is a promising functional tool for non-invasively monitoring function of transplanted kidneys.

        Characteristics and formation mode of salt-bearing series in typical rift valley basin, eastern China

        The Shulu Sag is a typical rift valley basin in easternChina, where the formation mechanism of Cenozoic salt-bearingseries has been poorly understood. In this paper, petrologic analysis,X-ray powder Diffraction (XRD) analysis and the analysis ofhalite ion concentrations of the first member of the Shahejie Formationfrom two drilling cores were conducted to interpret theformation mechanism of these salt-bearing series in Shulu Sag. Theresults indicated that the salt-bearing series is mainly composed of calcilutiteor mudstone at top and bottom, and anhydrite-bearing haliteand thin interbeds of salt-bearing calcilutite and dark grey shale inthe middle part. These thin interbeds with porphyritic or petalshapedglauberite crystals or some thinner dark grey shale interbedsseparated halites into several members with the average thicknessof only 9~12 cm in the two drilling holes. This typical rhythmicpattern due to frequent alternation of concentration was evidencedby the variation of chemical composition and hydrogen isotopes ofhalite fluid inclusions. The presence of large number of primaryfluid inclusions within chevron crystals and vertically orientedbottom-growth crystals showed that the halite were precipitated inshallow water (<60 cm). These features are direct evidence for thisfrequent alternation of dissolution and concentration of brines andterrigenous detrital-chemical shallow-water sedimentary model ofthese small rift-valley basins in eastern China.

        Memristive effect with non-zero-crossing current-voltage hysteresis behavior based on Ag doped Lophatherum gracile Brongn

        The memristive effect become a bio-electronics research focus with the development of sustainable systems and the application of multifunctional electronic devices. In this paper, the natural Lophatherum gracile Brongn (LGB) was employed as active layer to prepare Ag/LGB/fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) bio-memristor. Further, different doping ratios nano silver powders (Ag nanoparticle) were doped into LGB functional layers at 0 wt%, 0.2 wt%, 0.33 wt%, 1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt%, 10.0 wt% and 20.0 wt%. It is found that the capacitive-coupled memristive performance of the Ag/Ag-doped-LGB/FTO devices was markedly changed. Finally, it is confirmed that Ag ions transferring and Ag filament formation under the applied voltage are responsible for capacitive-coupled memristive behavior. This research has revealed the realization of capacitive-coupled memristive effect of biomemristor, which opens a new way to achieve multifunctional performance for electronic device.

        Modeling and coordinative optimization of NOx emission and efficiency of utility boilers with neural network

        empirical model to predict the boiler efficiency and pollutant emissions was developed with artificialneural networks based on the experimental data on a 360 MW W-flame coal fired boiler. The temperature of the furnacewas selected as an intermediate variable in the hybrid model so that the predictive precision of NOx emissions was en-hanced. The predictive precision of the hybrid model was operational objects were proposed in order to minimize the fuel and environmental costs. Based on the neural networkmodel and optimal objects, a genetic algorithm was employed to seek real-time solution every 30 seconds. Optimummanipulated variables such as excess air, primary air and secondary air were obtained under different optimal objects.The above algorithm interconnected with a distributed control system (DCS) formed the supervisory control and achievedreal-time coordinated optimization control of utility boilers.

        Growth behavior and kinetics of magnetite during magnetization roasting

        The magnetization roasting of hematite with two particle sizes was performed to investigate the growthbehavior and kinetics of magnetite. The magnetite exhibited comparable growth trends throughout themagnetization roasting process at different roasting temperatures, and enhancing the roasting temperaturecan facilitate the growth of magnetite. The nascent magnetite nuclei appeared acicular, predominantlydeveloped along the edges and fissures of the hematite particles before progressively growinginward. Moreover, the temperature stress and magnetite formation led to the loose and porous structureof the nascent magnetite particles. The growth kinetics demonstrated that the growth process of magnetitecould be divided into induction period and growth period based on the different growth rates. For the same hematite sample, the growth rate of magnetite in the induction period was lower than thatin the growth period. The magnetization roasting of hematite with a smaller particle size may be completedin a shorter time, even if increasing the particle size of hematite can accelerate the growth rateof magnetite. The growth kinetic models were established based on the parabolic law, and the reliabilityof describing the growth process of magnetite was verified by comparing the predicted values with theexperimental values.
