        Collective dynamics in multi-population Hamiltonian systems

        In this paper, we investigate measure synchronization (MS) in a two-population network of coupled metronomes system. The system consists of N identical metronomes placed on two swing boards, and the two swings are connected by spring of stifness k. Metronomes on each swing represents a single population. We mainly study the collective dynamics of multipopulation Hamiltonian induced by increased couplings, including inter-population and intra-population couplings. It is found that by tuning K for the inter-population coupling intensity and R for the intra-population coupling intensity, the system reaches various MS states at certain critical coupling intensities, including partial MS and complete MS. The occurrence of partial and complete MS are discussed particularly by analyzing the Poincaré sections of the Hamiltonian system. In addition, we fnd correspondence in between the phase-locking dynamics and various MS transitions.

        Dynamic Response of Reinforced Concrete Beams Following Instantaneous Removal of a Bearing Column

        This paper documents an experimental study of dynamic response of reinforced concrete beams following instantaneous removal of a bearing column. Four half-scale specimens representing two-span beam bridging across the removed column were tested. The test boundary conditions simulated rotational and longitudinal restraints imposed on a frame beam by the neighboring structural components. The gravity loads were simulated by attaching mass blocks on the beams at three locations. Dynamic loading effects due to sudden removal of a column were simulated by quickly releasing the supporting force at the middle of the specimens. The experimental study investigated the load-carrying capacity of beams restrained longitudinally at the boundaries and dynamic impact on forces. The tests confirmed the extra flexural strength provided by compressive arch action under dynamic loading. The tests also indicated that the dynamic amplification effects on forces were much lower than that assumed in the current design guideline for progressive collapse.

        Examination of lysine requirement of healthy young male adults on a Chinese habitual diet by the modified indicator amino acid oxidation method

        There is currently no reference for intake of lysine for Chinese people; therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the lysine requirement of Chinese young male adults on a habitual Chinese mixed diet based on the modified indicator amino acid oxidation method. Seven young men with a mean age of 23.7 ± 2.2 years that were healthy based on questionnaire, physical examinations and screening tests were evaluated. Subjects were evaluated over five consecutive 7 day periods, during which time they were administered decreasing amounts of lysine via the diet (65, 55, 45, 35, 25 mg·kg<SUP>-1</SUP>·d<SUP>-1</SUP>). Subjects were allowed to adapt from day 1 to 6 and the isotopes were measured on day 7 in each period. The subjects" body weights, body compositions and plasma proteins were also examined during the study. Amino acid kinetics were measured based on the indicator amino acid oxidation technique using the <SUP>13</SUP>CO2 release rate and phenylalanine oxidation rate to estimate lysine requirements. Body weights, body compositions, and plasma proteins of subjects did not change significantly relative to those at baseline. The mean and the upper 95% CI of lysine requirements of Chinese habitual diets were determined to be 58.41 and 70.09 mg·kg<SUP>-1</SUP>·d<SUP>-1</SUP>, respectively, based on the <SUP>13</SUP>CO2 release rate and 54.28 and 65.14 mg·kg<SUP>-1</SUP>·d<SUP>-1</SUP>, respectively, based on the phenylalanine oxidation rate.

        Quality Variable Prediction for Dynamic Process Based on Adaptive Principal Component Regression with Selective Integration of Multiple Local Models

        The measurement of the key product quality index plays an important role in improving the production efficiency and ensuring the safety of the enterprise. Since the actual working conditions and parameters will inevitably change to some extent with time, such as drift of working point, wear of equipment and temperature change, etc., these will lead to the degradation of the quality variable prediction model. To deal with this problem, the selective integrated moving windows based principal component regression (SIMV-PCR) is proposed in this study. In the algorithm of traditional moving window, only the latest local process information is used, and the global process information will not be enough. In order to make full use of the process information contained in the past windows, a set of local models with differences are selected through hypothesis testing theory. The significance levels of both T - test and χ<sup>2</sup> - test are used to judge whether there is identity between two local models. Then the models are integrated by Bayesian quality estimation to improve the accuracy of quality variable prediction. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive soft measurement method is verified by a numerical example and a practical industrial process.

      • L0 Gradient based Image Smoothing Method for Ear Identification

        Ear identification is an important biometric identification technique and has been widely used in many applications. One of the most important components in ear identification system is image preprocessing. The performance of image preprocessing has a significant impact on the accuracy of ear identification system. This paper proposes a L0 gradient based image smoothing method for ear identification. First, ear images are filtered using L0 gradient based method. Then the contrast of the image is enhanced using histogram equalization method in order to make ear edges more discriminative. Comparative experiments with an existing algorithm demonstrate that our method has better performance and is more suitable for ear identification.

        Nonlinear modeling of flat-plate structures using grid beam elements

        This paper presents a simplified grid beam model for simulating the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete flat-plate structures. The beam elements are defined with nonlinear behavior for bending moment and torsion. The flexural stiffness and torsional strength of the beam elements are defined based on experimental data to implicitly account for slab two-way bending effects. A failure criterion that considers the interaction between the punching strength and slab flexural behavior is incorporated in the model. The effects of bond-slip of slab reinforcement on connection stiffness are examined. The proposed grid beam model is validated by simulating large-scale tests of slab-column connections subjected to concentric gravity loading and unbalanced moment. This study also determines the critical parameters for a hysteretic model used to simulate flat-plates subjected to cyclic lateral loading.

        Preparation of minor ginsenosides C-Mc, C-Y, F2, and C-K from American ginseng PPD-ginsenoside using special ginsenosidase type-I from Aspergillus niger g.848

        Background: Minor ginsenosides, those having low content in ginseng, have higher pharmacological activities. To obtain minor ginsenosides, the biotransformation of American ginseng protopanaxadiol (PPD)-ginsenoside was studied using special ginsenosidase type-I from Aspergillus niger g.848. Methods: DEAE (diethylaminoethyl)-cellulose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were used in enzyme purification, thin-layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used in enzyme hydrolysis and kinetics; crude enzyme was used in minor ginsenoside preparation from PPD-ginsenoside; the products were separated with silica-gel-column, and recognized by HPLC and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance). Results: The enzyme molecular weight was 75 kDa; the enzyme firstly hydrolyzed the C-20 position 20- O-b-D-Glc of ginsenoside Rb1, then the C-3 position 3-O-b-D-Glc with the pathway Rb1/Rd/F2/C-K. However, the enzyme firstly hydrolyzed C-3 position 3-O-b-D-Glc of ginsenoside Rb2 and Rc, finally hydrolyzed 20-O-L-Ara with the pathway Rb2/C-O/C-Y/C-K, and Rc/C-Mc1/C-Mc/C-K. According to enzyme kinetics, Km and Vmax of MichaeliseMenten equation, the enzyme reaction velocities on ginsenosides were Rb1 > Rb2 > Rc > Rd. However, the pure enzyme yield was only 3.1%, so crude enzyme was used for minor ginsenoside preparation. When the crude enzyme was reacted in 3% American ginseng PPD-ginsenoside (containing Rb1, Rb2, Rc, and Rd) at 45C and pH 5.0 for 18 h, the main products were minor ginsenosides C-Mc, C-Y, F2, and C-K; average molar yields were 43.7% for CMc from Rc, 42.4% for C-Y from Rb2, and 69.5% for F2 and C-K from Rb1 and Rd. Conclusion: Four monomer minor ginsenosides were successfully produced (at low-cost) from the PPDginsenosides using crude enzyme.

        徐志摩英文书信中体现的浪漫主义想像与彷徨

        Xu Zhimo, a modern romantic poet of China, interacted with many famous British scholars and formed deep friendships during his study in Cambridge University. The studying in Cambridge University not only made Xu Zhimo a famous poet, but also made him an important link between modern literature in China and the West, which is recorded in the history of Cambridge University. Xu Zhimo, as a disseminator of Chinese and Western culture, spreading the latest information and trends of Western knowledge to China through exchanges with western scholars, and introduced Chinese culture to British scholars. Through Xu Zhimo’s English letters, we can understand the profound connotation of his literary ideas and works and his important role in the cultural exchange between China and the West. If Xu Zhimo expresses his inner feelings implicitly in his poems and essays, then in his English letters he confides his romantic imagination and depressed mood in natural and frank words. Although Xu Zhimo’s works have not been recognized for a long time, their unique artistic appeal of his work and its important contribution to the development of Chinese new poetry, as well as the important influence on the cultural exchanges between China and the West will be more profound with the development of society.
