Porous membranes in pressure-assisted forward osmosis: Flux behavior and potential applications

        Yang Yang,Xueli Gao,Zhaokui Li,Qun Wang,Senjie Dong,Xiaojuan Wang,Zhun Ma,Leyi Wang,Xinyan Wang,Congjie Gao 한국공업화학회 2018 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.60 No.-

In this work, pressured-assisted forward osmosis (PAFO) was performed using porous membranes to achieve higher fluxes. The effects of additional pressure and membrane orientation on membrane performance were investigated. When ultralow additional pressure (0.04 bar) was applied, the water flux at AL-FS orientation (i.e. active layer facing the feed solution) was observed to double. Reverse solute diffusion was also inhibited dramatically at both membrane orientations in PAFO. Filtration tests revealed that porous membranes with ultralow pressure in FO were more applicable than ultrafiltration (UF) because mild condition (i.e., 0.12 bar versus 1.25 bar) is conducive to preserving microalgae cell integrity.

Genome-wide identification of the valine-glutamine motif containing gene family and the role of VQ25-1 in pollen germination in Brassica oleracea

        Yang Miaomiao,Liu Ziwei,Yu Yuanhui,Yang Min,Guo Li,Han Xuejie,Ma Xiangjie,Huang Ziya,Gao Qiguo 한국유전학회 2023 Genes & Genomics Vol.45 No.7

Background The plant-specific valine-glutamine (VQ) motif containing proteins tightly regulate plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, the genome-wide identification and functional analysis of Brassica oleracea (B. oleracea) VQ genes have not been reported. Objective To identify the VQ gene family in B. oleracea and analyze the function of Bo25-1 in pollen germination. Methods The Hidden Markov Model (HMM) of VQ family was used to query the BoVQ genes in the B. oleracea genome. The BoVQ genes preferentially expressed in anthers were screened by qRT-PCR. Subcellular localization of VQ25-1 was observed in Nicotiana benthamiana (N. benthamiana) leaves. To analysis the role of BoVQ25-1 in pollen germination, the expression of BoVQ25-1 was suppressed using antisense-oligonucleotides (AS-ODN). Results A total of 64 BoVQ genes were identified in the B. oleracea genome. BoVQ25-1 was found to be preferentially expressed in the B. oleracea anthers. BoVQ25-1 was cloned from the anthers of the B. oleracea cultivar ‘Fast Cycle’. BoVQ25-1 is localized to the nucleus. The pollen germination rate significantly decreased after AS-ODN treatment. Conclusion Sixty-four BoVQ genes were identified in the B. oleracea genome, of which BoVQ25-1 plays an important role in pollen germination.

Effects of maternal undernutrition during late pregnancy on the regulatory factors involved in growth and development in ovine fetal perirenal brown adipose tissue

        Yang Huan,Ma Chi,Zi Yang,Zhang Min,Liu Yingchun,Wu Kaifeng,Gao Feng 아세아·태평양축산학회 2022 Animal Bioscience Vol.35 No.7

Objective: The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of maternal undernutrition during late pregnancy on the expressions of genes involved in growth and development in ovine fetal perirenal brown adipose tissue (BAT). Methods: Eighteen ewes with singleton fetuses were allocated to three groups at day 90 of pregnancy: restricted group 1 (RG1, 0.33 MJ metabolisable energy [ME]/kg body weight [BW]0.75/d, n = 6), restricted group 2 (RG2, 0.18 MJ ME/kg BW0.75/d, n = 6), and a control group (CG, ad libitum, 0.67 MJ ME/kg BW0.75/d, n = 6). The fetuses were removed at day 140 of pregnancy. All data were analyzed by using the analysis of variance procedure. Results: The perirenal fat weight (p = 0.0077) and perirenal fat growth rate (p = 0.0074) were reduced in RG2 compared to CG. In fetal perirenal BAT, the protein level of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) (p = 0.0001) was lower in RG1 and RG2 compared with CG and UCP1 mRNA expression (p = 0.0265) was decreased in RG2. The protein level of myogenic factor 5 (Myf5) was also decreased in RG2 (p = 0.0001). In addition, mRNA expressions of CyclinA (p = 0.0109), CyclinB (p = 0.0019), CyclinD (p = 0.0015), cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) (p = 0.0001), E2F transcription factor 1 (E2F1) (p = 0.0323), E2F4 (p = 0.0101), and E2F5 (p = 0.0018) were lower in RG1 and RG2. There were decreased protein expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) (p = 0.0043) and mRNA expression of CCAAT/ enhancer-binding protein-α (C/EBPα) (p = 0.0307) in RG2 and decreased PPARγ mRNA expression (p = 0.0008) and C/EBPα protein expression (p = 0.0015) in both RG2 and RG1. Furthermore, mRNA expression of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) (p = 0.0083) and BMP7 (p = 0.0330) decreased in RG2 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor co-activator-1α (PGC-1α) reduced in RG2 and RG1. Conclusion: Our observations support that repression of regulatory factors promoting differentiation and development results in the inhibition of BAT maturation in fetal perirenal fat during late pregnancy with maternal undernutrition. Nonlinear bending of functionally graded porous nanobeam subjected to multiple physical load based on nonlocal strain gradient theory

Yang Gao,Wan-Shen Xiao,Haiping Zhu 국제구조공학회 2019 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.31 No.5

We in this paper study nonlinear bending of a functionally graded porous nanobeam subjected to multiple physical load based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory. For more reasonable analysis of nanobeams made of porous functionally graded magneto-thermo-electro-elastic materials (PFGMTEEMs), both constituent materials and the porosity appear gradient distribution in the present expression of effective material properties, which is much more suitable to the actual compared with the conventional expression of effective material properties. Besides the displacement function regarding physical neutral surface is introduced to analyze mechanical behaviors of beams made of FGMs. Then we derive nonlinear governing equations of PFGMTEEMs beams using the principle of Hamilton. To obtain analytical solutions, a two-step perturbation method is developed in nonuniform electric field and magnetic field, and then we use it to solve nonlinear equations. Finally, the analytical solutions are utilized to perform a parametric analysis, where the effect of various physical parameters on static bending deformation of nanobeams are studied in detail, such as the nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, the ratio of nonlocal parameter to strain gradient parameter, porosity volume fraction, material volume fraction index, temperature, initial magnetic potentials and external electric potentials.

Histological Changes of Cervical Disc Tissue in Patients with Degenerative Ossification

        Yang Xiong,Ying-Li Yang,Yu-Shan Gao,Xiu-Mei Wang,Xing Yu 대한신경외과학회 2022 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.65 No.2

Objective : To explore the histological feature of the cervical disc degeneration in patients with degenerative ossification (DO) and its potential mechanisms. Methods : A total of 96 surgical segments, from cervical disc degenerative disease patients with surgical treatment, were divided into ossification group (group O, n=46) and non-ossification group (group NO, n=50) based on preoperative radiological exams. Samples of disc tissues and osteophytes were harvested during the decompression operation. The hematoxylin-eosin staining, Masson trichrome staining and Safranin O-fast green staining were used to compare the histological differences between the two groups. And the distribution and content of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, p-Smad2 and p-Smad3 between the two groups were compared by a semi-quantitative immunohistochemistry (IHC) method. Results : For all the disc tissues, the content of disc cells and collagen fibers decreased gradually from the outer annulus fibrosus (OAF) to the central nucleus pulposus (NP). Compared with group NO, the number of disc cells in group O increased significantly. But for proteoglycan in the inner annulus fibrosus (IAF) and NP, the content in group O decreased significantly. IHC analysis showed that TGF-β1, p-Smad2, and p-Smad3 were detected in all tissues. For group O, the content of TGF-β1 in the OAF and NP was significantly higher than that in group NO. For p-Smad2 in IAF and p-Smad3 in OAF, the content in group O were significantly higher than group NO. Conclusion : Histologically, cervical disc degeneration in patients with DO is more severe than that without DO. Local higher content of TGF-β1, p-Smad2, and p-Smad3 are involved in the disc degeneration with DO. Further studies with multi-approach analyses are needed to better understand the role of TGF-β/Smads signaling pathway in the disc degeneration with DO.

Positive Association of TEAD1 With Schizophrenia in a Northeast Chinese Han Population

        Yang Sun,Lin Wen,Yi-Yang Luo,Wen-Juan Hu,Hui-Wen Ren,Ye Lv,Cong Zhang,Ping Gao,Li-Na Xuan,Guan-Yu Wang,Cheng-Jie Li,Zhi-Xin Xiang,Zhi-Lin Luan 대한신경정신의학회 2023 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.20 No.12

Objective Schizophrenia is a complex and devastating psychiatric disorder with a strong genetic background. However, much uncertainty still exists about the role of genetic susceptibility in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. TEA domain transcription factor 1 (TEAD1) is a transcription factor associated with neurodevelopment and has modulating effects on various nervous system diseases. In the current study, we performed a case–control association study in a Northeast Chinese Han population to explore the characteristics of pathogenic <i>TEAD1</i> polymorphisms and potential association with schizophrenia. Methods We recruited a total of 721 schizophrenia patients and 1,195 healthy controls in this study. The 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene region of <i>TEAD1</i> were selected and genotyped. Results The genetic association analyses showed that five SNPs (rs12289262, rs6485989, rs4415740, rs7113256, and rs1866709) were significantly different between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls in allele or/and genotype frequencies. After Bonferroni correction, the association of three SNPs (rs4415740, rs7113256, and rs1866709) with schizophrenia were still evident. Haplotype analysis revealed that two strong linkage disequilibrium blocks (rs6485989-rs4415740-rs7113256 and rs16911710-rs12364619-rs1866709) were globally associated with schizophrenia. Four haplotypes (C-C-C and T-T-T, rs6485989-rs4415740-rs7113256; G-T-A and G-T-G, rs16911710-rs12364619-rs1866709) were significantly different between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. Conclusion The current findings indicated that the human <i>TEAD1</i> gene has a genetic association with schizophrenia in the Chinese Han population and may act as a susceptibility gene for schizophrenia.

Effect of Different Tumbling Marination Methods and Time on the Water Status and Protein Properties of Prepared Pork Chops

        Gao, Tian,Li, Jiaolong,Zhang, Lin,Jiang, Yun,Yin, Maowen,Liu, Yang,Gao, Feng,Zhou, Guanghong Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.7

The combined effect of tumbling marination methods (vacuum continuous tumbling marination, CT; vacuum intermittent tumbling marination, IT) and effective tumbling time (4, 6, 8, and 10 h) on the water status and protein properties of prepared pork chops was investigated. Results showed that regardless of tumbling time, CT method significantly decreased the muscle fiber diameter (MD) and significantly increased the total moisture content, product yield, salt soluble proteins (SSP) solubility, immobilized water component (p<0.05) compared with IT method. With the effective tumbling time increased from 4 h to 10 h, the fat content and the MD were significantly decreased (p<0.05), whereas the SSP solubility of prepared pork chops increased firstly and then decreased. Besides, an interactive effect between CT method and effective tumbling time was also observed for the chemical composition and proportion of immobilized water (p<0.05). These results demonstrated that CT method of 8 h was the most beneficial for improving the muscle structure and water distribution status, increasing the water-binding capacity and accelerating the marinade efficiency of pork chops; and thus, it should be chosen as the most optimal treatment method for the processing production of prepared pork chops.
