To clarify the effect of a phytochemical, methyl gallate (MG) on a heavy metal (cadmium)-induced renal toxicity, cytotoxicity and the change of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene expression was studied using cultured mouse renal glomerular mesangial cells (MMC). By employing RT-PCR and Western blotting analysis, we have examined the HO-1 induction in MMCs that were treated with $Cd^{2+}$ and/or MG. Using MTT assay we have also examined the cytoprotective effect of HO-1 induction against the cytotoxicity caused by toxic dose of $Cd^{2+}$. In MMCs exposed to $Cd^{2+}$ and MG, expression of HO-1 (mRNA and protein) was increased in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The increments of HO-1 mRNA and protein expressions by $Cd^{2+}$ and MG were inhibited by the treatment of the cells with actinomycin D, an inhibitor of transcription. The decreased viability of the cells by $Cd^{2+}$ was partially recovered by the treatment of MG and this recovery by the MG was reduced by the treatment of zinc protoporphyrin IX (a HO-1 inhibitor). From these results, methyl gallate might have cytoprotective effect on $Cd^{2+}$-induced cytotoxicity that is related with heme oxygenase-1 induction.

In this paper, Recognition of HANGUL Vowel using a neural network is studied. In general, Back-propagation is applied for the speech recognition, but has too much computational time for learning. The method using peak information of speech signal is used for the purpose of reduction of computational time. The speech spectrum of a vowel consists of the sixteen frame and a frame is divided by the sixteen hand and binary code 1,0 is used as input data corresponding to whether peaks exist or not, respectively, on each band in frequency spectrum. The experimental result show that the learning number is reduced remarkably and the recognition rate is improved according to increasing ratio of learning and unlearning data.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to investigate the improvement effect of white ginseng extract (GS-KG9) on D-galactosamine (Ga1N)-induced oxidative stress and liver injury. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 6 groups. Rats were orally administrated with GS-KG9 (300, 500, or 700 mg/kg) or silymarin (25 mg/kg) for 2 weeks. The rats of the GS-KG9- and silymarin-treated groups and a control group were then intraperitoneally injected Ga1N at a concentration of 650 mg/kg for 4 days. To investigate the protective effect of GS-KG9 against GalN-induced liver injury, blood liver function indicators, anti-oxidative stress indicators, and histopathological features were analyzed. RESULTS: Serum biochemical analysis indicated that GS-KG9 ameliorated the elevation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in GalN-treated rats. The hepatoprotective effects of GS-KG9 involved enhancing components of the hepatic antioxidant defense system, including glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). In addition, GS-KG9 treatment inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) production induced by GalN treatment in hepatocytes and significantly increased the expression levels of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) proteins, which are antioxidant proteins. In particular, by histological analyses bases on hematoxylin and eosin, Masson"s trichrome, α-smooth muscle actin, and transforming growth factor-β1 staining, we determined that the administration of 500 mg/kg GS-KG9 inhibited hepatic inflammation and fibrosis due to the excessive accumulation of collagen. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that GS-KG9 improves GalN-induced liver inflammation, necrosis, and fibrosis by attenuating oxidative stress. Therefore, GS-KG9 may be considered a useful candidate in the development of a natural preventive agent against liver injury.
아조벤젠 분자(Disperse Red 1)를 포함한 측쇄형 고분자에서 광유도 복굴절의 실시간적 조사

아조벤젠 그룹을 포함한 측쇄형 고분자 필름(PDR1)에서 광 유도된 이방성을 실시간적으로 조사하였다. 수평, 수직한 흡수율의 변화를 광 유도된 복굴절의 기록, 감쇠, 소거, 완화 과정에 따라 측정하여, 매질 내의 아조벤젠 분자의 정렬상태와 복굴절과의 관계를 광 이성화과정으로 설명하였다. 또한 기록빔의 세기를 따른 수직, 수평한 흡수율의 변화와 유도된 복굴절의 관계를 조사하였다. The photo-induced anisotropy for a polymeric film(PDR1) containing azobenzene group as side-chain was investigated dynamically. The change of absrobances with parallel and perpendicular components was measured in recording, decaying, erasing and relaxation processes of photo-induced birefringence, so the relation between the alignment of azobenzene groups and the birefringence was well explained according to the photo-isomerization. Also, the dependence of the photo-induced birefringence on intensity of recording beam was investigated with changes of both absorbance and birefringence.
정확한 완충기체효과가 적용된 질량분석원리에 대한 다중입자 분석 전산시늉

질량분석기로 사용되는 폴 트랩 내에서 보다 실제적인 이온운동을 예측해내기 위하여 약 2천 개의 다중입자의 궤적에 대한 계산을 실시하였다. 보다 정확한 질량 분석스펙트럼을 얻기 위하여 충돌확률에 대한 보다 정확하고 실질적인 함수 값을 도입하였다. 계산된 전산시늉의 결과들로부터 특히 작은 질량의 영역에 대한 분석을 할 경우 본 논문에서 제시된 바와 같이 매우 정확한 충돌확률이 고려되어야 함을 확인할 수 있었다. To predict the practical characteristics of ion motion in the paul trap as a mass spectrometer, the ion trajectories of the multi-particle(over than 2000 particles) were calculated. In order to expect more practical mass spectrum, the exact expressions for the collision probability was adopted. From the simulation result, we found that the exact collision probability has to be considered to analyze the materials existed in the low mass region.

Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.
Molecular Aspects of Organic Ion Transporters in the Kidney

<P> A function of the kidney is elimination of a variety of xenobiotics ingested and wasted endogenous compounds from the body. Organic anion and cation transport systems play important roles to protect the body from harmful substances. The renal proximal tubule is the primary site of carrier-mediated transport from blood into urine. During the last decade, molecular cloning has identified several families of multispecific organic anion and cation transporters, such as organic anion transporter (OAT), organic cation transporter (OCT), and organic anion-transporting polypeptide (oatp). Additional findings also suggested ATP-dependent organic ion transporters such as MDR1/P-glycoprotein and the multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) as efflux pump. The substrate specificity of these transporters is multispecific. These transporters also play an important role as drug transporters. Studies on their functional properties and localization provide information in renal handling of drugs. This review summarizes the latest knowledge on molecular properties and pharmacological significance of renal organic ion transporters.
Endothelin Increases Intracellular Free Calcium in Isolated Rat Nephron

In the freshly isolated rat nephron, the effect of endothelin-1, -2 and -3 (ET-1, -2 and -3) on cytosolic free calcium concentration ($[Ca^{2+}]_i$) was determined using the fluorescent indicator Fura-2/AM. $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ increase was investigated in 9 parts of the single nephron including glomerulus (Glm), $S_1,\;S_2,\;S_3$, cortical and medullary thick ascending limb and cortical (CCT) and outer medullary collecting tubule (OMCT). Endothelins increased $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ in Glm (ET-1; $127{\pm}17%$, ET-2; $93{\pm}5%$, ET-3; $169{\pm}17%$), CCT (ET-1; $30{\pm}6%$, ET-2; $38{\pm}19%$, ET-3; $158{\pm}18%$) and OMCT (ET-1; $197{\pm}11%$, ET-2; $195{\pm}11%$, ET-3; $215{\pm}37%$) at 10-7 M. In OMCT, ET-1 and ET-2 increased $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ in a dose-dependent manner ($10^{-10}{\sim}10^{-6}$ M). To the contrary, ET-3-induced $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ rise was begun from $10^{-12}$ M. BQ-123Na, an antagonist of ETA receptor, at $10^{-4}$ M inhibited about 30% of $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ rise induced by ET-1 and -3. Binding experiments using $[^{125}I]ET-3$ showed the existence of $ET_B$ receptor in OMCT. This binding was replaced by ET-1, ET-2 or ET-3 by the almost same degree but not by angiotensin II or vasopressin.
