The characteristic features of surface ozone concentration and the forecasting procedure of high ozone days have been studied. The ozone concentration was continuously measured during 3 years (1997∼1999) at air quality monitoring stations in five major cities in Korea. The diurnal variation of surface ozone concentration on high ozone days is characterized by low ozone concentration at night. The ozone concentration increases continuously after sunrise, to reach a peak at 1500∼1600 LST. Thereafter it decreases steadily to a low concentration at sunset. The diurnal and annual maximum of the surface ozone concentration at Seoul were observed in May and June, respectively. The favorable synoptic condition for the high ozone day is divided into 4 different synoptic weather patterns: a high-pressure system from the Sea of Okhotsk, the Pacific subtropical high extending westward, a moving high-pressure system covering the Korean peninsula, and a synoptic system in front of a typhoon. Most of high ozone days occur under the high pressure system in Korea.

Cytogenetic and hematological analysis was performed in peripheral blood of pig in the high background radiation area (HBRA) (Goesan-gun) and control area. The frequency of micronuclei (MN) in peripheral blood lymphocytes from pig was used as a biomarker of radiobiological effects resulting from exposure to environmental radiation. An estimated dose of radiation was calculated by a best fitting linear-quadratic model based on the radiation-induced MN formation from the swine lymphocytes exposed in vitro to radiation over the range from 0 Gy to 4 Gy. When analysed by Iinear-quadratic model the line of best fit was y=0.0102D²+0.0250D+0.011[y=number of MN/cytokinesis-blocked (CB) cells and D=irradiation dose in Gy]. MN rates per 1,000 CB lymphocytes of pig from HBRA and control area were 9.20±3.88 and 11.00±2.98, respectively. There were no significant differences in MN frequencies and hematological values in pig between HBRA and control area.
Identification of Novel Insecticidal Compounds Modulating Juvenile Hormone Receptor Complex

Insect growth regulators (IGRs) are insecticides that disrupt the normal development of target insects by inducing symptoms such as premature molting or supernumerary larval stages. IGRs are categorized into three types based on their mode of action. One of the them is classified as juvenile hormone agonists (JHAs). In recent studies, we identified juvenile hormone antagonists (JHANs) from plant extracts. In order to identify a novel juvenile hormone agonists and antagonists, we tested 2,354 chemical compounds using the yeast-two hybrid system. Among them, 2 JHAs and 4 JHANs were selected and their insecticidal activities were evaluated against Aedes albopictus larvae. These results may be useful for development of novel IGR insecticides.

Cytogenetic and hematological analysis was performed in peripheral blood obtained from cattle bred in the high background radiation areas (HBRA, Goesan-gun, Cheongwon-gun,Boeun-gun) and a control area. The frequencies of gamma-ray induced micronuclei (MN) in the cytokinesis- blocked (CB) lymphocytes at several doses were measured in 3 cattle. An estimated dose of radiation was calculated by a best fitting linear-quadratic model based on the radiation-induced MN formation from the bovine lymphocytes exposed in vitro to radiation over the range from 0 mGy to 1,969 mGy. The measurements performed after irradiation showed dose-related increases in the MN frequency in each donors. The results were analyzed using a linear-quadratic model with a line of best fit of y = (0.0583 ± 0.0137)D + (0.0366 ± 0.0081)D² + (0.0093 ± 0.0015) (y = number of MN/CB cells and D = irradiation dose in Gy). MN rates per 1,000 CB lymphocytes of cattle from the Goesangun, Cheongwon-gun, Boeun-gun and the control area were 6.50 ± 2.72, 9.00 ± 4.50, 10.89 ± 4.23 and 9.60 ± 4.70, respectively. The MN frequencies of CB lymphocytes from cattle bred in 4 areas mean that the values are within the background variation in this experiment. The MN frequencies and hematological values were similar regardless of whether the cattle were bred in the HBRA or the control area.

Ankylosis of joint is defined as limited movement due to infection, trauma, or surgical procedure. A 59-year-old female with a chief complaint of limited movements during mouth opening had a positive history of trauma to her right TMJ area about 5 years ago. From that time, progressive mouth opening limitation and intermittent pain have occurred. At the time of admission the patient showed mandibular deviation to the right side during mouth opening, with a maximum opening limited to 5 mm. On plain radiographs, right condylar enlargement and joint space reduction by newly formed bony tissues were observed. CT scans showed right condylar enlargement, cortical sclerosis, and thickening of the condyle, articular fossa and articular eminence.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Juvenile hormone antagonists (JHANs) are known to interfere with the formation of juvenile hormone (JH) receptor complex. JHANs might be effective for control of target pests in larval stages at which stages high level of endogenous JH titer is maintained. In order to identify novel insecticidal compounds, 2352 compounds were surveyed on their JHAN activities using the yeast-two hybrid system. Among 53 compounds with JHAN activities, penfluridol showed high level of insecticidal activity against larvae of <I>Aedes albopictus</I>. JHAN activity was increased in proportion to the concentration of penfluridol. Larvicidal activity of penfluridol was 1.3–2.0 folds higher than that of pyriproxyfen. Insect growth regulators (IGRs) are insecticides that disrupt the normal development of target insects. Among the IGR insecticides, juvenile hormone (JH)-related IGRs are of particular interest because they stimulate or interfere with the formation of JH receptor complex. In the precious studies, novel JH-related IGRs with JH agonist (JHA) and antagonist (JHAN) activity were identified by using yeast two-hybrid system transformed with the Aedes aegypti JH receptor complex. In this study, the transcriptomic responses of Aedes albopictus were investigated upon JHA and JHAN, respectively. These results will provide important information about understanding of impact of JH-related IGRs in transcription level.

The MN frequencies of CB lymphocytes from pigs bred in three areas means that the values are within the background variation in this experiment. The MN frequencies and hematological values were similar regardless of whether the pigs were bred in the HBRA or the control area.
