        Background/Aims: Westernization in many Asian countries have changed lifestyles and diets, so once rare diseases have now become prevalent. The aim of this study is to investigate the changing pattern of digestive and liver disease in Korea, from 1990 to 2006. Methods: We extracted data specific gastrointestina (GI) disease based on the International Classification of Diseases code from the in-patients records at the Kangnam St. Mary`s Hospital in 1990, 1996 and 2006. This hospital is a tertiary-care hospital in Seoul, Korea, which has a capacity of 800 beds. Results: The admission rate for GI disease increased between 1990 and 2006. Overall in-patients were 1,623 persons in 1990, 2,368 persons in 1996 and 4,166 persons in 2006. The mean age of in-patients increased as time went by. A stomach cancer was the most common diagnosis during all periods, but its prevalence has decreased. Colon cancer ranked the 7th in 1990, but markedly increased and now ranks the second. The third was a hepatocellular carcinoma. The bile duct and gallbladder cancer, pancreas and esophageal cancer ranking followed with little interval change. In cases of cancer patients, a regular admission dramatically increased for chemotherapy. The number of patients admitted with pre-malignant neoplasm of stomach and colon increased remarkably with the development of endoscopy. The liver transplant, inflammatory bowel discase, and reflux esophagitis emerged form mid-1990s with greater frequencies, yet much below the levels found in the West. The admission rate for peptic ulcer, especially ulcer bleeding remained relatively stable, despite a decreased rate for ulcer perforation. Liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, cholelithiasis with cholecystitis-cholangitis, appendicitis, hemorrhoid and gastritis all decreased. Conclusions: The stomach cancer is the leading cause of admission, despite a recent decline. Colon cancer showed a marked rise. The liver transplant, inflammatory bowel disease and reflux esophagitis were new diagnosis with an increased tendency.

        Modeling of asymmetric degradation based on a?non-uniform electric field and temperature in amorphous In–Ga–Zn–O thin film transistors

        <P>We propose a new local degradation model based on a non-uniform increase in donor-like traps (DLTs) determined by distributions of an electric field and?measured device temperature in amorphous In–Ga–Zn–O (a-IGZO) thin film transistors (TFTs). A systematic investigation of the degradation model reveals that vertical field-dependent DLTs are essential for modeling of measured asymmetric electrical characteristics between the?source and drain after positive gate and drain bias stressing. An increased temperature due to self-heating is found to play a role in intensifying the asymmetric degradation. From the individual simulation of measured transfer curves at different stress times, the?model parameters and an asymmetry index as a function of stress time are extracted. It is expected that this novel methodology will?provide new insight into asymmetric degradation and?be utilized to predict the influence of electric field and heat on?degradation under various bias-stress conditions in a-IGZO TFTs.</P>

        Novel two-dimensional In<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> nanodiscs for high-rate performance of solid-state symmetric supercapacitors

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, we report a two-dimensional In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanodiscs for solid-state symmetric supercapacitors (SSCs) synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. It exhibits high specific capacitance of 622 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at 3 A g<SUP>−1</SUP> and 412 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at 7 A g<SUP>−1</SUP> based on individual electrodes. Further, the SSCs demonstrate a wide potential window of 1.0 V, excellent specific capacitance of 89.7 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at a current density of 1 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>, a high energy density of 12.5 W h kg<SUP>−1</SUP> at a power density of 500 W kg<SUP>−1</SUP>, and an outstanding stability with ∼97% rate retention after 10,000 cycles.         The Implication of Cardiac Injury Score on In-hospital Mortality of Coronavirus Disease 2019

        Backgrounds: The severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread worldwide. Cardiac injury after SARS-CoV-2 infection is a major concern. The present study investigated impact of the biomarkers indicating cardiac injury in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on patients' outcomes. Methods: This study enrolled patients who were confirmed to have COVID-19 and admitted at a tertiary university referral hospital between February 19, 2020 and March 15, 2020. Cardiac injury was defined as an abnormality in one of the following result markers: 1) myocardial damage marker (creatine kinase-MB or troponin-I), 2) heart failure marker (N-terminal-pro B-type natriuretic peptide), and 3) electrical abnormality marker (electrocardiography). The relationship between each cardiac injury marker and mortality was evaluated. Survival analysis of mortality according to the scoring by numbers of cardiac injury markers was also performed. Results: A total of 38 patients with COVID-19 were enrolled. Twenty-two patients (57.9%) had at least one of cardiac injury markers. The patients with cardiac injuries were older (69.6 ± 14.9 vs. 58.6 ± 13.9 years old, P = 0.026), and were more male (59.1% vs. 18.8%, P = 0.013). They showed lower initial oxygen saturation (92.8 vs. 97.1%, P = 0.002) and a trend toward higher mortality (27.3 vs. 6.3%, P = 0.099). The increased number of cardiac injury markers was significantly related to a higher incidence of in-hospital mortality which was also evidenced by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis (P = 0.008). Conclusion: The increased number of cardiac injury markers is related to in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19.

        The nucleophilic substitution reactions of cyclopentylarenesulfonates and cyclohexylarenesulfonates with anilines in acetonitrile at 65.0℃ are investigated. The cross-interaction constants ρxz(and βxz) between substitue-nts in the nucleophile(X) and leaving group(Z) are positive and have relatively small mmagnitude. The transition state(TS) variation is consistent with that predicted by the More O'Ferrall-Jencks diagram as expected from the positive ρxz. The small magnitude of ρxz correctly refrects a relatively loose TS structure in contrast to the tight TS for primary alkyl derivatives under similar reaction conditions.

        Xenon Flash Lamp Annealing on a-IGZO Thin-film Transistors at Different Pulse Repetition Numbers

        Xenon (Xe) flash lamps were applied to the annealing process of amorphous In–Ga–Zn–O (a-IGZO) semiconductor films at room temperature for different pulse repetition numbers, and the results were compared with the conventional annealing process. From the Hall measurement results, the a-IGZO films annealed using Xe flash lamps showed improvements in carrier mobilities similar to a-IGZO films annealed in a conventional vacuum furnace. The Xe flash lamp was also used in the annealing process in the fabrication of a-IGZO thin-film transistors (TFTs). The transfer characteristics of a-IGZO TFTs showed enhanced saturation field-effect mobilities, smaller subthreshold swing, threshold voltage shifts, and higher on–off ratios at higher pulse repetition numbers of the Xe flash lamp. These results showed that the Xe flash lamp has an annealing effect on amorphous oxide semiconductor electronic devices with higher productivities.

        To investigate the efficacy of endoluminal ultrasound system (EUS) as a surrogate for high frequency transvaginal ultrasonography and as an optional baseline study in determining parameirial and stromal invasion of early stage cervical cancer, 52 women suspected of cervical cancer underwent EUS. A 12 MHz endoscopic probe was employed to radially scan the cervix for possible lesions suspected to be invasive cancer during a period of 6 months from Feb. 1 to July 1, 1995. Patients also underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or computerized tomography (CT) as a routine mode of baseline study, and were clinically staged by 3 independent physicians specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine, Ajou University, Suwon, Korea. Thirty one patients subsequently received surgery appropriate for the stage of the disease and the final pathology findings were compared with the results of clinical staging, EUS, MRI/CT by regression analysis. The results showed that there was statistically significant correlation between MRI/CT and pathology (r=0.660, p<0.02), between EUS and pathology (r=0.803, p<0.01), and between clinical staging and pathology (r=0.825, p<0.01). It is concluded that there was significant statistical correlation t>etween EUS, MRI/CT, clinical staging and pathology, but the question remained as to the statistical superiority of EUS over MRI/CT with regard to parametrial invasion and stromal invasion depth assessment. Finally, EUS is useful as an alternative optional diagnostic tool in the baseline study of cervical cancer.

      • A new strategy for integrating semiconducting SWCNTs into pseudo-cubic In<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> heterostructures for solid-state symmetric supercapacitors with a superior stability and specific-capacitance

        <P>Herein, we report a rapid one-step hydrothermal synthesis of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes/pseudo-cubic In2O3 heterostructures (s-S/IHs) and successfully demonstrate LED lighting by using symmetric solid-state supercapacitors (SSCs). This is a simple, scalable, proficient and <I>in situ</I> synthesis method to harvest materials that can be engaged as cutting-edge electrode materials for high-energy SSCs. The cost effective and environment-friendly s-S/IH conveys excellent electrochemical properties with a high specific capacitance (641.1 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at a current density of 1.8 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>) and tremendous rate capabilities with an excellent capacitance (335.1 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at a current density of 3.8 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>). The SSC devices with a maximum potential window of 1.2 V are fabricated by using two similar s-S/IH electrodes in order to justify the outstanding performance for real-life energy storage devices. Notably, the SSC devices offered a high specific capacitance (139.5 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at 2 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>), a high energy density (6.9 W h kg<SUP>−1</SUP> at 234.3 W kg<SUP>−1</SUP>), an ultra-high power density (789.3 W kg<SUP>−1</SUP> at 4.6 W h kg<SUP>−1</SUP>), and a remarkable cycling stability (91.8% specific capacitance retention rate after 5000 cycles). These extraordinary findings illustrate an insight into designing a nanocube In2O3 lattice deformed by very small concentration of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes that are economically affordable and environmentally harmonious for the fabrication and demonstration of high performance SSC devices.</P>

        Review : Current status of assisted reproductive technology in Korea, 2009

        Great advances have been made in the field of assisted reproductive technology (ART) since the first in vitro fertilization (IVF) baby was born in Korea in the year of 1985. However, it deserve to say that the invaluable data from fertility centers may serve as a useful source to find out which factors affect successful IVF outcome and to offer applicable information to infertile patients and fertility clinics. This article intended to report the status of ART in 2009 Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology surveyed. The current survey was performed to assess the status and success rate of ART performed in Korea, between January 1 and December 31, 2009. Reporting forms had been sent out to IVF centers via e-mail, and collected by e-mail as well in 2012. With International Committee Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technologies recommendation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and non-ICSI cases have been categorized and also IVF-ET cases involving frozen embryo replacement have been surveyed separately. Seventy-four centers have reported the treatment cycles initiated in the year of 2009, and had performed a total of 27,947 cycles of ART treatments. Among a total of 27,947 treatment cycles, IVF and ICSI cases added up to 22,049 (78.9%), with 45.3% IVF without ICSI and 54.7% IVF with ICSI, respectively. Among the IVF and ICSI patients, patients confirmed to have achieved clinical pregnancy was 28.8% per cycle with oocyte retrieval, and 30.9% per cycle with embryo transfer. The most common number of embryos transferred in 2009 is three embryos (40.4%), followed by 2 embryos (28.4%) and a single embryo transferred (13.6%). Among IVF and ICSI cycles that resulted in multiple live births, twin pregnancy rate was 45.3% and triple pregnancy rate was 1.1%. A total of 191 cases of oocyte donation had been performed to result in 25.0% of live birth rate. Meanwhile, a total of 5,619 cases of frozen embryo replacement had been performed with 33.7% of clinical pregnancy rate per cycle with embryo transfer. When comparing with international registry data, clinical pregnancy rate per transfer from fresh IVF cycles including ICSI (34.1%,) was comparable to clinical pregnancy rate per transfer in European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology report was 32.5% though lower than 45.0% for USA data. There was no remarkable difference in status of assisted reproductive technology in Korea between the current report and the data reported in 2008. The age of women trying to get pregnant was reconfirmed to be the most important factor that may have impact on success of ART treatment.
