      • 울산연안 定置網에 어획된 漁類의 종조성 및 양적변동

        울산 정자연안 외측에 위치한 정치망에서 1998년 2월, 4월 ,6월 ,8월 10월 및 12월, 총 6회에 걸쳐 어획물을 채집하여, 魚類의 種組成, 量的變動 및 群集構造에 대하여 연구하였다. 채집된 어류는 총 12目 45科 89種, 62,978개체였고, 총 생체량은 6,494㎏이였다. 농어目 어류와 쏨뱅이目 어류가 총 56種으로 전체 出現種數의 62.9%를 차지하여 가장 우점하는 目들로 나타났으며, 科別로는 전갱이科와 참복科 어류가 각각 7種 出現하여 가장 많은 種이 出現하였다. 총 89種의 어류중 個體數는 고등어, 전갱이, 멸치 및 말쥐치의 4種이 全個體數의 89.7%를 차지하여 우점하였다. 生體量은 고등어, 전갱이, 꽁치, 말쥐치, 전어, 꼬치고기, 멸치, 정어리, 임연수어 및 덕대의 順으로 이들 10種이 全生體量의 95.5%를 차지하여 우점하였다. 出現 個體數와 生體量은 고수온기인 여름에 높게 나타났으며, 저수온기인 봄과 겨울에 낮게 나타나 수온과 밀접한 관계가 있었다. 월별 出現種數는 2월과 10월에 비교적 적은 種이 출현하였으며, 4월에 49種, 6월에 50種이 나타나 가장 많은 種이 출현하였고, 8월에 46種, 12월에 44種이 出現하였다. 종다양도지수(H')와 0.693~2.146으로 4월에 가장 높은 값을 보였고, 8월에 가장 낮은 값을 보였으며, 우점도지수는 다양도지수와 반대로 4월에 가장 낮은 값을 8월에 가장 높았다. 주요 魚種의 出現頻度를 보면 고등어, 전갱아. 멸치, 말쥐치, 꽁치, 전어, 망상어 및 정어리가 거의 年中 出現하여 본 해역에서의 주거종이었다. Fishes were collected by set net to determine seasonal species composition and fluctuation in abundance in coastal waters of Ulan. Korea, in February, April, June, August and December, 1998. A total of 62,978 fishes (6,494㎏) were sampled and classified into 12 orders, 45 families and 89 species. The most dominant orders were Perciformes and Scorpaeniformes, which accounted for 62.9% of the total. The most dominant families were Carangidae and Tetraodontidae, each represented seven species. The most dominant species were Scomber japonicus, Trachurus japonicus, Engraulis japonicus and Maurolicus muelleri, which accounted for 89.7% of the total fishes collected. The most dominant in biomass were Scomber japonicus, Trachurus japonicus, Cololabis saira, Thamnaconus modestus, Konosirus punctatus, Sphyraena pingues, Engraulis japonicus, Sardinops melanostictus, Pleurogrammus azonus and Pampus echinogaster. Those species together accounted for 95.5% of the total biomass. The number of individuals and the biomass were much higher in summer than in spring and winter, and closely correlated with water temperature. The number of species showed a peak in August, with 46 species, and the lowest number in February, with 30 species. The diversity index was the highest in April(H'=2.146) and the lowest in August(H'=0.693).

The Front Cover image illustrates the unique battery architecture comprising a skeleton frame surrounding an empty space, that is, a hollow‐spiral anode with a multi‐helical structure. This design enables the battery to reliably power an LED screen or an MP3 player even under severe mechanical twisting and bending. </P>

        금강에 서식하는 감돌고기 Pseudopungtungia nigra의 탁란

        2003년 5월부터 7월까지 전북 진안군 주천면의 금강상류의 지류인 주자천에서 감돌고기의 탁란에 관하여 조사하였다. 감돌고기는 꺽지의 수컷이 보호하는 산란장에 무리를 지어 침입하였고 탁란을 실시하였다. 감돌고기의 산란은 꺽지가 산란을 시작한 직후부터 시작되어 꺽지의 산란이 끝난 후에도 3∼5일 동안 더 진행되었다. 감돌고기 알의 부화는 대부분 숙주의 알보다 먼저 이루어졌고, 감돌고기의 자어는 부화 후 즉시 숙주의 산란장을 떠났다. 산란장을 지키는 부화 후 즉시 숙주의 산란장을 떠났다. 산란장을 지키는 꺽지 수컷이 사라졌을 때 산란장의 숙주의 알과 감돌고기 알은 즉시 다른 어류에 의해 모두 섭식되었다. 따라서, 감돌고기는 자신의 알이 부화할 때까지 숙주의 보호를 받는 커다란 이득을 획득한다. A field study of the brood parasitism by Korean shiner, Psudopungtungia nigra, on nests of the Korean aucha perch, Coreoperca herzi, was carried out from May 2003 to July 2003 at the Juja stream, Jinan-gun, Jeonlabuk-do, Korea. Observations in the wild showed that the Korean shiner concentrated on nests of Korean aucha perch in which the nest owners had just spawned. The Korean shiner always spawned in nests of Korean aucha perch. When the parasite shiner spawned in the perch nest, the parasite eggs hatched earlier than the host eggs. Parasite prelarvae shiner left the nest of the host immediately after hatching. Host and parasite eggs disappeared with no guarding by the host male. We suggest that the parasite eggs are protected from egg predators by the host male.

      • Analyzing Schedule Delay of Mega Project: Lessons Learned From Korea Train Express

        <P> In 2004, Korea became the fifth country in the world to own and operate a high-speed railway called Korea Train eXpress (KTX). Numerous uncertainties and challenges during planning and managing phase resulted in schedule delays and cost overruns. The delay causes of each activity along the 412 km Korea high-speed railway route were very difficult to identify because KTX project consisted of 11<TEX>$\,$</TEX>141 different activities. This paper evaluates challenges, obstacles, and performances of KTX project. First, critical sections in the railway route that influenced significant delays to project completion were identified. Then, delay causes of these critical sections were investigated thoroughly. The analysis discovered five major delay causes for KTX project. They are lack of owner's abilities and strategies to manage hi-tech oriented mega project; frequent changes of routes triggered by conflicts between public agencies and growing public resistance from environmental concerns; the inappropriate project delivery system; a lack of proper scheduling tool tailored for a linear mega project; and redesign and change orders of main structures and tunnels for high-speed railway, which is fundamentally different from the traditional railway construction. Based on the in-depth analysis of KTX project, through which a conceptual framework was established to identify the various facets of mega projects, this paper suggests lessons learned for engineers to better prepare and respond to potential causes of schedule delays for mega projects. </P>

        Rubrofusarin-6-β-gentiobioside inhibits lipid accumulation and weight gain by regulating AMPK/mTOR signaling

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>Although rubrofusarin-6-β-gentiobioside (RFG), which is a component of <I>Cassiae tora</I> seed, could likely regulate hyperlipidemia, its anti-obesity effect and related mechanism have not been elucidated.</P> <P><B>Purpose</B></P> <P>The aim of this study was to examine whether RFG can ameliorate obesity and the mechanism of lipid accumulation regulated by RFG.</P> <P><B>Study design</B></P> <P>In <I>in vitro</I> experiments, we confirmed the anti-adipogenic effect of RFG using 3T3-L1 cells and human adipose mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs). To confirm the anti-obesity effect, High-Fat Diet (HFD)-induced obese mice were selected as a model.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>We investigated anti-adipogenic effects of RFG using MTS assay, Oil Red O Staining, real-time RT-PCR, western blot analysis, and immunofluorescence staining. The anti-obesity effect of RFG was confirmed in HFD-induced mice model using hematoxylin and eosin staining and serum analysis.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>RFG inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells and hAMSCs by reducing expression of mammalian targets of rapamycin (mTOR), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ, and CCAAT-enhancer binding protein (C/EBP)α. RFG phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in a liver kinase B (LKB) 1-independent manner. Moreover, the anti-adipogenic effect of RFG was blocked by AMPK inhibitor. These results suggest that RFG inhibits lipid accumulation via AMPK signaling. Furthermore, RFG reduced the body weight, size of epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT), and fatty liver in the mice. RFG also suppressed levels of adipogenic factors PPARγ, C/EBPα, FAS, LPL, and aP2) by activating AMPK in the eWAT and liver.</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>RFG can ameliorate obesity, and thus, could be used as a therapeutic agent for treating obesity.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Arctii Fructus Inhibits Colorectal Cancer Cell Proliferation and MMPs Mediated Invasion via AMPK

        <P>Although Arctii Fructus (AF) has been shown to have various pharmacological effects, there have been no studies concerning the inhibitory effects of AF on the metastatic properties of colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of this study was to investigate whether AF could suppress CRC progression by inhibiting cell growth, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), migration, and the invasion ability of CRC cells. AF decreased proliferation of CRC cells by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis via extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways. Regarding metastatic properties, AF inhibited EMT by increasing the expression of the epithelial marker, E-cadherin, and decreasing the expression of the mesenchymal marker, N-cadherin, in CT26 cells. Moreover, AF decreased the migration and invasion of CT26 cells by inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 activity. We confirmed that the decreased invasion ability and MMP-9 activity by AF treatment involved AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation. Collectively, this study demonstrates that AF inhibits the proliferation and metastatic properties of CRC cells.</P>

        Long-term Results of Laser in Situ Keratomileusis for High Myopia

        The objective of this study was to evaluate the results of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for high myopia after a follow-up of two years. A total of 42 eyes from 33 patients with high myopia (range: -9.00 D to -25.50 D) were studied. LASIK was performed using an automated microkeratome (Steinway, USA) and OmniMed II excimer laser with the standard MKM program (Summit Technology, Inc., Waltham, MA) in all patients. The patients were followed up at one, three, six, 12 and 24 months. During follow-up manifest refraction and best corrected and uncorrected visual acuity were measured. Any complications were also analyzed. The two-year follow-up results were as follows. The mean postoperative manifest spherical equivalents (MSE) were -0.51 D at one month, -1.09 D at three months, -1.78 D at six months, -2.17 D at 12 months and -2.61 D at 24 months. Myopic regression continued during the two-year follow-up (p < 0.05). The accuracy of the intended postoperative correction within ±2.00 D was 73.8% at one month, 69.1% at three months, 52.4%at six months, 52.4% at 12 months, and 45.2% at 24 months.
