• ARPES study of the epitaxially grown topological crystalline insulator SnTe(111)

        Zhang, Yi,Liu, Zhongkai,Zhou, Bo,Kim, Yeongkwan,Yang, Lexian,Ryu, Hyejin,Hwang, Choongyu,Chen, Yulin,Hussain, Zahid,Shen, Zhi-Xun,Mo, Sung-Kwan Elsevier 2017 Journal of electron spectroscopy and related pheno Vol.219 No.-

Abstract

SnTe is a prototypical topological crystalline insulator, in which the gapless surface state is protected by a crystal symmetry. The hallmark of the topological properties in SnTe is the Dirac cones projected to the surfaces with mirror symmetry, stemming from the band inversion near the L points of its bulk Brillouin zone, which can be measured by angle-resolved photoemission. We have obtained the (111) surface of SnTe film by molecular beam epitaxy on BaF2(111) substrate. Photon-energy-dependence of in situ angle-resolved photoemission, covering multiple Brillouin zones in the direction perpendicular to the (111) surface, demonstrate the projected Dirac cones at the Γ ¯ and M ¯ points of the surface Brillouin zone. In addition, we observe a Dirac-cone-like band structure at the Γ point of the bulk Brillouin zone, whose Dirac energy is largely different from those at the Γ ¯ and M ¯ points.

Highlights

Topological crystalline insulator SnTe(111) thin film was grown on BaF2(111) substrate by using molecular beam epitaxy.

The electronic structures of SnTe(111) with surface Dirac cones were studied by a wide-range photon-energy-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

A Dirac-cone-like band structure was observed at the Γ point of the bulk Brillouin zone of SnTe(111).

SPA0355 prevents ovariectomy-induced bone loss in mice

        김상훈,Zhongkai Zhang,문영재,박일운,조용곤,전라옥,박병현 대한약리학회 2019 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.23 No.1

Estrogen withdrawal in post-menopausal women leads to overactivation of osteoclasts, which contributes to the development of osteoporosis. Inflammatory cytokines are known as one of mechanisms of osteoclast activation after estrogen deficiency. SPA0355 is a thiourea derivative that has been investigated for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, its efficacy in bone resorption has not been previously investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of SPA0355 on the development of osteoporosis and to explore its mode of action. In vitro experiments showed that SPA0355 inhibited receptor activator of NF-B ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis in primary bone marrow-derived macrophages. This effect appears to be independent of estrogen receptor activation as ICI 180,782 failed to abrogate its effects on osteoclasts. Further signaling studies revealed that SPA0355 suppressed activation of the MAPKs, Akt, and NF-B pathways. SPA0355 also increased osteoblastic differentiation, as evidenced by its effects on alkaline phosphatase activity and mineralization nodule formation. Intraperitoneal administration of SPA0355 to ovariectomized mice prevented bone loss, as verified by threedimensional images and bone morphometric parameters derived from CT analysis. Noticeably, SPA0355 did not show hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity and also had little effect on hematological parameters. Taken together, the results indicate that SPA0355 may protect against bone loss in ovariectomized mice by stimulation of osteoblast differentiation and by inhibition of osteoclast resorption. Therefore, SPA0355 is a safe and potential candidate for management of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Manipulations of glucose/lipid metabolism and gut microbiota of resistant starch encapsulated Ganoderma lucidum spores in T2DM rats

        Yumei Jiang,Na Zhang,Yawen Zhou,Zhongkai Zhou,Yu Bai,Padraig Strappe,Chris Blanchard 한국식품과학회 2021 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.30 No.5

Our team previously demonstrated that Ganodermalucidum spores (GLS) and resistant starch (RS) hadhypoglycemic effects separately on type 2 diabetic mellitus(T2DM) rats. This work was to explore the effects ofadministering encapsulated GLS within RS (referred to asEGLS) in the T2DM rats, which were induced by streptozotocin(STZ). The EGLS was orally administered torats for 28 days. The parameters of glycometabolismand lipometabolism were evaluated, and fecal microbiotacomposition was investigated. The results showed thatEGLS significantly enhanced glycometabolism and lipometabolismparameters in T2DM rats, which might beassociate with the enhancement of the glucose and lipidmetabolism, insulin secretion, and glycogen synthesis andreduced lipogenesis. Furthermore, the intervention ofEGLS also reduced the Proteobacteria community andimproved dysfunctional gut microbiota. This study indicatedEGLS may be a potential candidate for dietaryintervention to modulate diabetes.

Seasonal changes in soil acidity and related properties in ginseng artificial bed soils under a plastic shade

        You, Jiangfeng,Liu, Xing,Zhang, Bo,Xie, Zhongkai,Hou, Zhiguang,Yang, Zhenming The Korean Society of Ginseng 2015 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.39 No.1

Background: In Changbai Mountains, Panax ginseng (ginseng) was cultivated in a mixture of the humus and albic horizons of albic luvisol in a raised garden with plastic shade. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ginseng planting on soil characteristics. Methods: The mixed-bed soils were seasonally collected at intervals of 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, and 10-15 cm for different-aged ginsengs. Soil physico-chemical characteristics were studied using general methods. Aluminum was extracted from the soil solids with $NH_4Cl $(exchangeable Al) and Na-pyrophosphate (organic Al) and was measured with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results: A remarkable decrease in the pH, concentrations of exchangeable calcium, $NH_4^+$, total organic carbon (TOC), and organic Al, as well as a pronounced increase in the bulk density were observed in the different-aged ginseng soils from one spring to the next. The decrease in pH in the ginseng soils was positively correlated with the $NH_4^+$ (r=0.463, p<0.01), exchangeable calcium (r=0.325, p<0.01) and TOC (r= 0.292, p < 0.05) concentrations. The $NO_3^-$ showed remarkable surface accumulation (0-5 cm) in the summer and even more in the autumn but declined considerably the next spring. The exchangeable Al fluctuated from $0.10mg\;g^{-1}$ to $0.50mg\;g^{-1}$ for dry soils, which was positively correlated with the $NO_3^-$ (r=0.401, p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with the TOC (r=-0.329, p < 0.05). The Al saturation varied from 10% to 41% and was higher in the summer and autumn, especially in the 0-5 cmand 5-10 cm layers. Conclusion: Taken together, our study revealed a seasonal shift in soil characteristics in ginseng beds with plastic shade.

Interaction between rice bran albumin and epigallocatechin gallate and their physicochemical analysis

        Rui Yang,Yuqian Liu,Jingjing Xu,Wenting Shang,Xiaoyuan Zhang,Yongjin Wang,Chris Blanchard,Zhongkai Zhou 한국식품과학회 2018 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.27 No.6

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is sensitive to heat thus its application in food industry is limited. In this work, rice bran albumin protein (RAP) was used as a carrier for EGCG. RAP-EGCG complexes (RAPE) were prepared with the binding number n of 0.0505:1 (EGCG: RAP, w/w) and binding constant K of (0.74 ± 0.002) 9 104 M-1, which suggests that hydrogen bond/van der Waals forces played important roles in such binding. FTIR analysis demonstrated that EGCG could induce the secondary structure changes of RAP above the ratio of 1.92:1 (EGCG:RAP, w/w). Dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscope results showed that EGCG could trigger RAP association. Furthermore, the EGCG stability in RAPE was significantly improved than that of free EGCG in 10–60 C. The antioxidant ability of EGCG in RAPE was partially retained. These findings prove that RAP is a potential carrier for polyphenols and is beneficial for mechanism investigation between protein and polyphenols.
