        Firm size affecting efficiency of production and commercialization of knowledge: embedded in cluster development

        This study examines the impact of platform innovation on the efficiency of firms located in different clusters. The sample contains data for 1,257 firms from 2005 to 2015 in Beijing’s Zhongguancun Science Park, which is known as China’s ‘Silicon Valley’. Using the DEA model to gauge the efficiency of each firm over time, we found that firm size has a significantly negative correlation with knowledge production efficiency, a significantly positive correlation with its knowledge commercialisation efficiency, and an inverted-U shaped relationship with overall efficiency. We then explored the mediating effect of firm size on the relationship between the characteristics of clusters and firm efficiency, before concluding with both managerial and academic implications.

        Facile synthesis of novel ZnFe2O4/CdS nanorods composites and its efficient photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) under visible-light irradiation

        ZnFe2O4/CdS composites were successfully prepared by a facile process. The obtained samples have beencharacterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM), diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence(PL). Under visible light irradiation, ZnFe2O4/CdS composite shows higher photocatalytic activity in the Cr(VI) reduction, relative to the pure CdS and ZnFe2O4. The enhanced photocatalytic performance wasascribed to the intimate contact interfaces and matching band potentials between CdS and ZnFe2O4, andcan be related to the efficient transfer and separation of the electron-hole pairs. It was found that themodification of ZnFe2O4 did not affect the morphology of CdS. The result of PL test indicated a lowerintensity, and effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In addition, the ZnFe2O4/CdScomposites showed more intense optical absorption than that of pure CdS and ZnFe2O4. Through theanalysis of experiment results, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism over ZnFe2O4/CdS photocatalystswas also proposed.

        Manipulations of glucose/lipid metabolism and gut microbiota of resistant starch encapsulated Ganoderma lucidum spores in T2DM rats

        Our team previously demonstrated that Ganodermalucidum spores (GLS) and resistant starch (RS) hadhypoglycemic effects separately on type 2 diabetic mellitus(T2DM) rats. This work was to explore the effects ofadministering encapsulated GLS within RS (referred to asEGLS) in the T2DM rats, which were induced by streptozotocin(STZ). The EGLS was orally administered torats for 28 days. The parameters of glycometabolismand lipometabolism were evaluated, and fecal microbiotacomposition was investigated. The results showed thatEGLS significantly enhanced glycometabolism and lipometabolismparameters in T2DM rats, which might beassociate with the enhancement of the glucose and lipidmetabolism, insulin secretion, and glycogen synthesis andreduced lipogenesis. Furthermore, the intervention ofEGLS also reduced the Proteobacteria community andimproved dysfunctional gut microbiota. This study indicatedEGLS may be a potential candidate for dietaryintervention to modulate diabetes.

        Influence of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Electrical Properties on the Surface Modification of Polyethylene

        Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is a commonly used plasma surface modification technique, and the power parameters play a crucial role in influencing the modification results. Electrical properties of DBD pulses were studied by varying both power and frequency. Additionally, how these electrical properties influence the chemical and topographical alterations in polyethylene surface modification was investigated. In terms of chemical changes, we found that higher power supply significantly enhances the modification result, whereas alterations in frequency do not exert a substantial impact. Concerning topographical changes, increased power supply yielded similarly effective results, while heightened supply frequency improved the modification result due to the enhanced uniformity of discharge pulses. Regarding hydrophobicity, power supply exerts a more significant and pronounced influence compared to frequency.

        Antibacterial and Antioxidant Composite Fiber Prepared from Polyurethane and Polyacrylonitrile Containing Tea Polyphenols

        Antibacterial and antioxidant properties exert an indispensable effect on biomedical and packaging materialswhich are mainly made of fiber-based fabrics. The current research illustrates a novel type of composite fiber which wasprepared from thermoplastic polyurethane (PU), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and tea polyphenols (TP) through wet-spinningtechnology. The PU-PAN mass ratio was optimized upon the mechanical property; TP was incorporated into the compositefiber with different contents. The obtained fibers were fully characterized in terms of mechanical, thermal, morphologicalproperties as well as surface wettability. Additionally, in vitro TP release, antioxidant and antibacterial activity of suchcomposite fibers before and after washing were under investigation systematically and orderly. The findings showed that TPloadedcomposite fibers with an average diameter around 120 μm performed a sustained TP release behavior and desirablecytocompatibility. According to the capacity on scavenging 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals, theobservation of scavenging ratio reaching to 97 % proved the excellent antioxidant performance. Furthermore, the idealantibacterial activity against Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus was also demonstrated. Collectively, thisstudy provides a facile strategy to design and prepare a novel type of composite fibers and fabrics, which may be put intoapplication as wound dressing and tissue conduit.
