        Small heterodimer partner-interacting leucine zipper (SMILE) is a member of the cAMP response element-binding protein / activator transcription factor (CREB/ATF) family of basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors. Structurally, it exists in small and long isoforms resulting from alternative usage of the initiation codon. Though structurally similar to bZIP proteins, SMILE cannot bind to DNA but can homodimerize like them. SMILE acts as a corepressor for nuclear receptors related transcriptional activity and other transc- ription factors. SMILE plays a crucial role in metabolic signaling pathways by inhibiting DNA binding, competing with coactivators, and directly repressing transcription. This review focuses on the role of SMILE in hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism. Regulation of SMILE improves pathological conditions such as hepatitis, diabetes and fatty liver disease. Therefore, understanding the role of SMILE in metabolism and signaling pathways paves the way to consider SMILE as a potential target in treating liver metabolic diseases.

        Lingual K-loop archwire를 이용한 발치공간 폐쇄시 초기응력 분포에 대한 3차원 광탄성학적 연구

        제1소구치 발치를 동반한 설측교정치료시 lingual K-loop archwire로 전치부 후방견인을 시행한 경우 전치부 및 구치부에서 치조골에 발생하는 초기응력을 알아보기 위하여, K-loop의 의 vertical lg 길이는 15mm로 하고 편측당 350gm의 힘으로 활성화시킨 후 상악궁 광탄성 모형의 응력동결을 시행하고 각 치아별로 절단하여 3차원 광탄성법으로 분석한 바 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 중절치의 근심면은 치관측일수록 더 큰 인장응력을 보였으며 원심면은 치관측일수록 더 큰 압축응력을 보였다. 순면에서는 치관측일수록 더 큰 인장응력을 보였으며 설면에서는 치근측일수록 더 큰 압축응력을 보였다. 치근첨에서는 압축응력이 나타났다. 2. 측절치의 근심면에서는 치관측만 인장응력이 관찰되었고 원심면에서는 고른 압축응력을 보였다. 순면에서는 치관측일수록 더 큰 인장응력이 관찰되었고 설면에서는 치관측에서는 인장응력을, 치근측에서는 압축응력을 보였다. 치근첨에서는 압축응력이 관찰되었다. 3. 견치의 근심면은 치관측에서는 인장응력을, 치근측에서는 압축응력을 보였고 원심면은 인장응력을 보였다. 순면과 설면은 치관측일수록 큰 인장응력을 보였다. 순면보다 설면에서 더 큰 인장응력을 보였다. 치근첨에서는 압축응력이 관찰되었다. 4. 제2소구치는 근심면은 인장응력을 보이며 원심면은 치관측에서는 압축응력을, 치근측에서는 인장응력을 보였다. 협면은 치관측에서 압축응력을 보였으며, 설면은 치관측일수록 더 큰인장응력이 관찰되었다. 치근첨에서는 인장응력을 보였다. 5. 제 1대구치는 근원심면 모두에서 치관측일수록 더 큰 인장응력을 보였다. 협면에서는 응력이 나타나지는 않았고 설면은 치관측일수록 더 큰 인장응력이 관찰되었다. 협측치근들의 치근첨에서는 압축응력을, 구개측치근의 치근첨에서는 무응력을 보였다. 6. 제2대구치는 모든 치근의 치근첨에서 압축응력이 관찰되었다. 근심면은 치관측일수록 더 큰 압축응력을, 원심면은 치관측일수록 더 큰 인장응력을 보였다. 협면은 치관측일수록 더 큰 인장응력을 설면은 치관측일수록 더 큰 압축응력을 나타내었다. 따라서 전치부 후방견인시 transverse bowing effect는 뚜렷이 나타났으나, vertical bowing effect는 나타나지 않고 오히려 전치부가 함입되려는 응력이 발생하였다. This study was designed to investigate the stress distribution of alveolar bone in case of en masse retraction with lingual K-loop archwire using the 3-dimensional photoelastic stress analysis followed by stress freezing process. Lingual K-loop archwire which had loop in 15mm height was used and activated by retraction force of 350gm per each side. The results were as follows : 1. Central incisor : As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at both mesial and labial surfaces and the larger compressive stress was distributed at distal surface. As the closer side to root apex, the larger compressive stress was distributed at lingual surface. The compressive stress was distributed at root apex. 2. Lateral incisor : The tensile stress was distributed at the coronal side of mesial surface. The compressive stress was distributed at distal surface. As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at labial surface. The tensile stress was distributed at coronal side and the compressive stress was distributed at apical side of lingual surface. The compressive stress was distributed at root apex. 3. Canine : The tensile stress was distributed at coronal side and the compressive stress was distributed at apical side of musial surface. the tensile stress was distributed at distal surface. As the closer side to drown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at both musial and distal surfaces. The compressive stress was distributed at root apex. 4. Second premolar : The tensile stress was distributed at mesial surface. The compressive stress was distributed at coronal side and the tensile stress was distributed at apical side of distal surface. the compressive stress was distributed at coronal side of buccal surface. As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at lingual surface. The compressive stress was distributed at root apex. 5. First molar : As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at both mesial and distal surfaces. No stress was distributed at buccal surface. As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at both lingual surfaces. The compressive stress was distributed at buccal root apexes. 6. Second molar : The compressive stress was distributed at all root apexes. As the closer side to crown, the larger compressive stress was distributed at both mesial and lingual surfaces, and the larger tensile stress at both distal and buccal surfaces. Transverse bowing effect was observed in en-masse retraction with lingual K-loop archwire, however vertical bowing effect was not. Rather, reverse vertical bowing effect was developed.

        Performance based seismic design is a very efficient method in checking the seismic capacity of buildings. In this study, the method evaluating performance point of a double layered lattice dome based on capacity spectrum method (CSM) is proposed Because behaviors of a double layered lattice dome are affected by higher modes of vibration, they need to be included in evaluating seismic resistant capacity. In this paper, they are considered in the lateral bad distribution on for the pushover analysis process. The proposed method is successfully applied to estimate the performance point of a double layered lattice dome.

        <P><B>How to Prohibit Mast Cell Activation</B></P><P>Mast cells are the major effector cells of the allergic response. Binding of antigen to immunoglobulin E (IgE) molecules bound to the cell-surface, high-affinity IgE receptor FcεRI results in receptor clustering, mast cell activation, and degranulation, resulting in the release of factors that mediate the allergic response. Phosphorylation and activation of the Src family kinases Lyn and Syk are critical for mast cell activation. Kim <I>et al</I>. found that the scaffold protein prohibitin (PHB), which mediates functions such as mitochondrial biogenesis and transcriptional regulation (see commentary by Yurugi and Rajalingam), was abundant in intracellular granules in mouse mast cells. Stimulation of mast cells with antigen resulted in the translocation of PHB to plasma membrane lipid rafts, which was required for the association of FcεRI with Syk, the activation of Syk, and degranulation. Knockdown of PHB in mice inhibited mast cell activation and anaphylaxis, suggesting that targeting PHB therapeutically may reduce allergic responses.</P>

      • Interleukin-10–producing CD5<sup>+</sup> B cells inhibit mast cells during immunoglobulin E–mediated allergic responses

        <P>Subsets of B cells inhibit various immune responses through their production of the cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10). We found that IL-10-producing CD5(+) B cells suppressed the immunoglobulin E (IgE)- and antigen-mediated activation of mast cells in vitro as well as allergic responses in mice in an IL-10-dependent manner. Furthermore, the suppressive effect of these B cells on mast cells in vitro and in vivo depended on direct cell-to-cell contact through the costimulatory receptor CD40 on CD5(+) B cells and the CD40 ligand on mast cells. This contact enhanced the production of IL-10 by the CD5(+) B cells. Through activation of the Janus-activated kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 pathway, IL-10 decreased the abundance of the kinases Fyn and Fgr and inhibited the activation of the downstream kinase Syk in mast cells. Together, these findings suggest that an important function of IL-10-producing CD5(+) B cells is inhibiting mast cells and IgE-mediated allergic responses.</P>

        Comparative study of oncologic outcomes for laparoscopic vs. open surgery in transverse colon cancer

        Purpose: Laparoscopic resection for transverse colon cancer is a technically challenging procedure that has been excluded from various large randomized controlled trials of which the long-term outcomes still need to be verified. The purpose of this study was to evaluate long-term oncologic outcomes for transverse colon cancer patients undergoing laparoscopic colectomy (LAC) or open colectomy (OC). Methods: This retrospective review included patients with transverse colon cancer who received a colectomy between January 2006 and December 2010. Short-term and five-year oncologic outcomes were compared between these groups. Results: A total of 131 patients were analyzed in the final study (LAC, 84 patients; OC, 47 patients). There were no significant differences in age, gender, body mass index, tumor location, operative procedure, or blood loss between groups, but the mean operative time in LAC was significantly longer (LAC, 246.8 minutes vs. OC, 213.8 minutes; P = 0.03). Hospital stay was much shorter for LAC than OC (9.1 days vs. 14.5 days, P < 0.01). Postoperative complication rates were not statistically different between the two groups. In terms of long-term oncologic data, the 5-year disease-free survival and overall survival were not statistically different between both groups, and subgroup analysis according to cancer stage also revealed no differences. Conclusion: LAC for transverse colon cancer is feasible and safe with comparable short- and long-term outcomes.

        감태와 대황 에탄올 추출물 처리에 의한 저장 중 고등어 내의 히스타민 생성 억제 효과

        본 연구에서는, 고등어 육을 감태와 대황 에탄올 추출물에 침지를 통하여 histamine 생성을 억제하는 것을 알아보았다. 에탄올 추출물을 처리한 고등어 필렛을 4oC에서 25일 동안 저장하면서 생균수, histamine 함량, pH, VBN 함량을 측정하였다. 무처리구와 처리구 모두, 시간이 지남에 따라 생균수는 지속적으로 증가하였으나, 25일차까지 대황 및 감태 침지 처리구는 무처리 보다 약 2 log cycle 정도 균의 생육이 억제되었다. Histamine 함량의 경우 감태 및 대황 침지 처리구는 5일차에 115 및 96 ppm을 나타내어 무처리구 384 ppm에 비해 histamine 생성이 억제되는 것을 확인하였다. pH의 경우 감태 및 대황 에탄올 추출물에 침지한 처리구가 저장 기간이 증가함에 따라 무처리구에 비해 pH가 크게 증가하지 않았다. VBN 함량은 저장 10일차에, 모든 처리구에서 크게 증가하였고, 특히 무처리구가 50 mg/100 g로 가장 크게 증가하였고 감태 및 대황 침지 처리구는 각각 42, 41 mg/100 g의 함량을 나타내어 무처리구에 비해 유의적으로 감소하였다. 이상의 결과들을 종합해 볼 때, 감태 및 대황 에탄올 추출물이 저장기간 동안 고등어육내의 histamine 생성량을 감소시켜 고등어의 품질보존에 효과가 있을 것으로 사료된다. This study was conducted to investigate the inhibitory effect of Ecklonia cava (EC) and Eisenia bicyclis (EB) ethanol extract on histamine production in mackerel. Changes in viable cell counts, histamine contents, pH and VBN of mackerel fillet treated with ethanol extracts during 25 days at 4 were measured. Treatments of EC and EB ethanol extract had reduced growth of viable cells by 2 log cycles during storage. Production of histamine was decreased by EC and EB extracts (115 and 96 ppm) when compared to the control at 5 days (384 ppm). The pH of mackerels treated with EC and EB extracts were no different, while the pH of the control increased during storage. Furthermore, the VBN of mackerels treated with EC and EB extracts were significantly decreased when compared to the control. In conclusion, EC and EB extract may reduce scombroid fish poisoning by decreasing histamine production in mackerel during refrigerated storage.

        꽈배기 모자반 물 추출물의 항산화능과 물리적 특성에 대한 감마선 조사의 영향

        본 연구에서는 꽈배기모자반 물 추출물에 식품산업에서 사용이 확대되고 있는 감마선 조사기술을 이용하여 항산화능의 변화를 알아보고, 꽈배기모자반 물 추출물의 높은 점성과 짙은 색상으로 인한 문제점을 개선하고자 하였다. 꽈배기모자반 물 추출물의 감마선 조사에 따른 항산화능의 변화를 알아보기 위해 총 페놀화합물 함량을 측정하고 DPPH radical 소거능을 측정하였다. 그 결과, 3~20 kGy의 감마선을 조사한 꽈배기모자반 물 추출물은 조사선량이 증가할수록 총 페놀화합물 함량이 증가하였고, DPPH radical 소거능도 증가하여 감마선 조사에 의해 항산화능이 증진되었다. 그리고 꽈배기모자반 물 추출물에 감마선 조사 시 물리적 특성 변화를 알아보기 위해 색상과 점도를 측정한 결과, 감마선 조사선량이 증가할수록 색이 옅어지고 점성이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 꽈배기모자반 물 추출물에 감마선을 조사한 후 식품에 적용 시 가공특성을 개선시킬 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 따라서 감마선 조사는 꽈배기모자반 물 추출물의 물리적 특성을 개선시키고 항산화능 또한 증진시키므로 식품산업에 적용 시 기존의 천연 항산화제의 단점을 개선시킬 수 있는 기술로서 사용이 확대될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. In this study, the antioxidant properties and physical characteristics of irradiated Sargassum siliquastrum water extract were evaluated. Samples were irradiated with Co<SUP>60</SUP> γ-ray at doses ranging from 3 to 20 kGy. They were then analyzed to investigate antioxidant properties, including total phenolic compound content and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity. In addition, physical properties such as viscosity and color were evaluated. The results demonstrated that total phenolic compound content and DPPH radical scavenging activity were significantly improved (p<0.05) by irradiation. In terms of physical properties, viscosity and color were reduced in the irradiated extracts as compared to non-irradiated samples. In conclusion, gamma irradiation improved the antioxidant properties of Sargassum siliquastrum water extract, improving its original weak point as a natural antioxidant when applied in the food industry.
