Semiconducting nanorods and nanowires were synthesized byc-irradiation at room temperature and the atmospheric pressure.The experiment was carried out in ethylenediamine and pyridine as solvents. Ethylenediamine and pyridine molecules were coordi-nated with metal ions and have an eect on the shape like nanorods and nanowires. Their crystallinity was determined with X-raypowder diraction (XRD). Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) was used to characterize the elements. Transmission elec-tron microscopy (TEM) images were used to determine the diameter and the length of them.

We designed an effective screening method for double strand DNA (dsDNA) binders using DNA-modified magnetic particles. Hairpin DNA was immobilized on the surface of magnetic particle for a simple screening of dsDNA binding materials in a solution containing various compounds. Through several magnetic separation and incubation processes, four DNA-binding materials, DAPI, 9AA, AQ2A, and DNR, were successfully screened from among five candidates. Efficiency of screening was demonstrated by HPLC analysis using a C2/18 reverse-phase column. In addition, their relative binding strengths were verified by measuring the melting temperature ($T_m$). If hairpin DNA sequence is modified for other uses, this magnetic bead-based approach can be applied as a high-throughput screening method for various functional materials such as anti-cancer drugs.

Background rhBMP-2 is regarded as the most potent osteoinductive growth factor, and it has been used in the oral cavity with different carriers. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the bone-regenerative effect of rhBMP-2 delivered with different carrier systems through three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography analysis. Method A total of 112 patients underwent oral surgery with rhBMP-2 application (Group 1, n = 53) or without rhBMP-2 application (Group 2, n = 59). Group 1 was divided into 3 groups according to carriers, rhBMP-2 with allograft (Group 1–1, n = 34), rhBMP-2 with xenograft (Group 1–2, n = 5), and rhBMP-2 with absorbable collagen sponge (Group 1–3, n = 14). Cone beam computed tomography scans were taken before surgery (T0) 6 months after surgery (T1). The volume of defects was measured through the three-dimensional image analysis tool. Results The average bone regeneration rate of Group 1 was significantly greater than that of Group 2. Within Group 1, the group that used allograft as a carrier (Group 1–1) showed significantly higher bone regeneration rates than the group that used absorbable collagen sponge as a carrier (Group 1–3). Conclusion The use of rhBMP-2 after oral surgery results in a superior bone regeneration rate compared to not using rhBMP-2, and its efficacy depends on the carriers it is used with. Allograft affects bone regeneration more than absorbable collagen sponge when it is carried with rhBMP-2. Therefore, the appropriate use of rhBMP-2 with suitable bone grafting materials is useful for promoting postoperative bone regeneration in oral surgery.
Expression of Toll-Like Receptors in Verruca and Molluscum Contagiosum

Recent studies indicate that several Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are implicated in recognizing viral structures and instigating immune responses against viral infections. The aim of this study is to examine the expression of TLRs and proinflammatory cytokines in viral skin diseases such as verruca vulgaris (VV) and molluscum contagiosum (MC). Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunostaining of skin samples were performed to determine the expression of specific antiviral and proinflammatory cytokines as well as 5 TLRs (TLR2, 3, 4, 7, and 9). In normal human skin, TLR2, 4, and 7 mRNA was constitutively expressed, whereas little TLR3 and 9 mRNA was detected. Compared to normal skin (NS), TLR3 and 9 mRNA was clearly expressed in VV and MC specimens. Likewise, immunohistochemistry indicated that keratinocytes in NS constitutively expressed TLR2, 4, and 7; however, TLR3 was rarely detected and TLR9 was only weakly expressed, whereas 5 TLRs were all strongly expressed on the epidermal keratinocytes of VV and MC lesions. In addition, the mRNA expression of IFN- and TNF- was upregulated in the VV and MC samples. Immunohistochemistry indicated that IFN- and TNF- were predominately localized in the granular layer in the VV lesions and adjacent to the MC bodies. Our results indicated that VV and MC skin lesions expressed TLR3 and 9 in addition to IFN- and TNF- . These viral-induced proinflammatory cytokines may play a pivotal role in cutaneous innate immune responses.

The eukaryotic genome is packed into chromatin, which is important for the genomic integrity and gene regulation. Chromatin structures are maintained through assembly and disassembly of nucleosomes catalyzed by histone chaperones. Asf1 (anti-silencing function 1) is a highly conserved histone chaperone that mediates histone transfer on/off DNA and promotes histone H3 lysine 56 acetylation at globular core domain of histone H3. To elucidate the role of Asf1 in the modulation of chromatin structure, we screened and identified small molecules that inhibit Asf1 and H3K56 acetylation without affecting other histone modifications. These pyrimidine- 2,4,6-trione derivative molecules inhibited the nucleosome assembly mediated by Asf1 in vitro, and reduced the H3K56 acetylation in HeLa cells. Furthermore, production of HSV viral particles was reduced by these compounds. As Asf1 is implicated in genome integrity, cell proliferation, and cancer, current Asf1 inhibitor molecules may offer an opportunity for the therapeutic development for treatment of diseases. Sesquiterpene Lactones from the Roots of Ixeris sonchifolia

Three known sesquiterpene lactones were isolated from the n-BuOH fraction of the roots of Ixerissonchifolia. Their structures were identified as macrocliniside A (1), glucozaluzanin C (2), and ixerin H (3), by1 and 2 are guaiane-type, while compound 3 is a germacrane-type sesquiterpenelactone. Compounds 1-3 are first isolated from I. sonchifolia.

Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (IHES) is a rare disorder defined by persistent blood eosinophilia, evidence of eosinophil-associated organ dysfunction and absence of secondary causes. Eosinophilic infiltration and its mediator release can cause damage to multiple organs. Although IHES can involve every organ system, bladder involvement is rarely evidenced. We recently reported a case of IHES with both bladder and gastrointestinal tract involvement. A 43-year-old woman visited Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital complaining of urinary frequency, abdominal pain, and diarrhea for several months. Abdominal pelvic computed tomographic scan showed diffuse wall thickenings in her bladder and colon with small pelvic ascites. Laboratory investigation showed a marked peripheral eosinophilia and tissue biopsies confirmed eosinophilic infiltration in the bladder wall, esophagus, and duodenum. The patient was treated with prednisolone and her eosinophilia and symptoms have gradually improved.

N/A Backgroud/Aims: The nonspecific esophageal motility disorder (NEMD) has been reported to be related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in some cases. However, the pathophysiologic mechanism of NEMD has not been estabilished. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of esophagitis and gastric acid reflux following abnormal contractions in patients with NEMD. Methods: 122 NEMD patients were enrolled (76 male and 46 female) and their endoscopic findings and 24 hour esophageal Ph data were compared with 24 healthy subj ects. The abnormal contractions were classified as 1) non-transmitted con-traction, 2) low amplitude contraction, 3) non-transmitted and low amplitude contraction, and 4) others. Results: Among the 122 patients with NEMD, 62 patients (50.8%) had GERD, 53 patients (43.4%) had endoscopic reflux esophagitis, and 41patients (33.6%) had both. Acid exposed time studied by 24 hour Ph monitoring was more increased in NEMD patients than in healthy controls (7.48 ±10.68 vs 1.42 ±1.17), but there were no differences among abnormal contraction patterns. Moderate to severe reflux esophagitis were frequently seen in patients with combined abnormal contractions as the results of endoscopic findings. Pre-existing factors for the gastric acid reflux in NEMD patients were male and esophageal hiatal hernia. Conclusions: Large numbers of NEMD patients were found to have concurrent GERD in our study. However, the esophageal peristaltic dysfunction was more closely related to the severity of esophagitis rather than to the amount of refluexed gastric acid itself.
