This study was carried out in order to investigate the processing adaptability of Jeung-pyun. We used rice materals that were developed domestically for improving the utilization of rice. Six cultivars(Ilpoombyeo, Hwasungbyeo, Dasanbyeo, Daeribbyeo 1, Hyangmibyeo 1, Hyangmibyeo 2) of rice were used for making Jeung-pyun. In physicochemical properties of rice, Hwasungbyeo had the highest amylose content(20.4%) and Hyangmibyeo 2 had the lowest one(14.9%). Lipid content was 0.23%(Daeribbyeo 1)~0.43%(Ilpoombyeo), protein content was 7.94%(Ilpoombyeo)~8.43%(Dasanbyeo), and ash content was 0.15%(Hyangmibyeo 2)~1.24%(Daeribbyeo 1). In volume and specific volume of the 3 hour fermented Jeung-pyuns, Ilpoombyeo, Hwasungbyeo, Hyangmibyeo 2 were higher, but in the 7 hour fermented Jeung-pyuns, Dasanbyeo, Daeribbyeo 1, Hyangmibyeo 1 were higher. In the sensory evaluation of the test Jeung-pyuns, the overall quality of the 3 hour fermented Jeung-pyuns was not significantly different among the rice cultivars, whereas in the 7 hour fermented Jeung-pyuns Hyangmibyeo 2 had the lowest values. When the 7 hour fermented Jeung-pyuns were stored at 20℃, the hardness and brittleness of Jeung-pyuns were respectively increased, the cohesiveness was respectively decreased. The elasticity was not significantly different among the rice cultivars with storage days, and the gumminess was significantly difference between rice cultivars, respectively increasing during storage, but Hyangmibyeo 2 was the lowest, not increased. In instrumental characteristics of Jeung-pyuns, the hardness was correlated with amylose content and the brittleness and gumminess were highly correlated with the hardness.

The authors analized 78 patients with herpes zoster treated at Department of Dermatology, Chungnam National University Hospital from 1982 to 1985 to find out the epidemiology and clinical course. The results were as follows: 1. The annual prevalence rate of herpes zoster ranged 1.5% to 2.0%(mean 1.8%) and did not increase during 8 years from 1977 to 1984. 2. There was no sexual difference. 3. Herpes zoster was seen most frequently in the 50-59 year age group (24.4%), in July in a year (16.7%) and during summer(34.6%). 4. The dermatomic involvement of herpes zoster was most common on thoracic nerve(48.7%), and others were trigerminal nerve (28.2%), cervical nerve (14.1%), lumbar nerve(6.4%) and sacral nerve(2.6%) in order. 5. The interval of onset of subjective symptoms and vesicle appearance was 3.9 days in average. The mean duration of treatment was 13.8 days. There was a tendency that both interval and duration increased with increasing age. 6. The most common complication of herpes zoster was postherpetic neuralgia (6.4%) and others were keratoconjunctivitis(2.5%), herpes zoster with aberrant vesicles (2.5%) and recurrent herpes zoster (1.3%).

Recent studies indicate that several Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are implicated in recognizing viral structures and instigating immune responses against viral infections. The aim of this study is to examine the expression of TLRs and proinflammatory cytokines in viral skin diseases such as verruca vulgaris (VV) and molluscum contagiosum (MC). Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunostaining of skin samples were performed to determine the expression of specific antiviral and proinflammatory cytokines as well as 5 TLRs (TLR2, 3, 4, 7, and 9). In normal human skin, TLR2, 4, and 7 mRNA was constitutively expressed, whereas little TLR3 and 9 mRNA was detected. Compared to normal skin (NS), TLR3 and 9 mRNA was clearly expressed in VV and MC specimens. Likewise, immunohistochemistry indicated that keratinocytes in NS constitutively expressed TLR2, 4, and 7; however, TLR3 was rarely detected and TLR9 was only weakly expressed, whereas 5 TLRs were all strongly expressed on the epidermal keratinocytes of VV and MC lesions. In addition, the mRNA expression of IFN-β and TNF-α was upregulated in the VV and MC samples. Immunohistochemistry indicated that IFN-β and TNF-α were predominately localized in the granular layer in the VV lesions and adjacent to the MC bodies. Our results indicated that VV and MC skin lesions expressed TLR3 and 9 in addition to IFN-β and TNF-α. These viral-induced proinflammatory cytokines may play a pivotal role in cutaneous innate immune responses.

Purpose: Current clinical practices favor less or no thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression for low- to intermediate-risk thyroid cancer patients who receive thyroid lobectomy. The association of TSH suppression on healthrelated quality of life (HR-QoL) in patients after thyroid lobectomy is not well studied. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of TSH suppression on patient HR-QoL after thyroid lobectomy. Methods: This study included patients enrolled in an ongoing, multicenter, randomized controlled study investigating the effects of TSH suppression. Patients were randomized to either the low-TSH group (TSH target range, 0.3–1.99 μIU/mL) or the high-TSH group (TSH target range, 2.0–7.99 μIU/mL). The HR-QoL, hyperthyroidism symptom, and depression symptom questionnaires performed preoperatively and 2 weeks and 3 months postoperatively were evaluated. Results: Total of 669 patients (low-TSH group, 340; high-TSH group, 329) were included. Although total HR-QoL score changes were not different between the 2 groups, the high-TSH group had a significantly higher score in the physical domain at postoperative 3 months (P = 0.046). The 2 groups did not have significant differences in hyperthyroidism and depression scores. Conclusion: In the short-term postoperative period, the physical HR-QoL scores in thyroid lobectomy patients were better when they did not receive TSH suppression. This study suggests the importance of considering HR-QoL when setting TSH suppression targets in thyroid lobectomy patients.
