<P>Most members of the tumor‐necrosis factor superfamily have been reported to mediate reverse signaling in T cells, macrophages, and/or dendritic cells. BAFF has been reported to have important functions in B‐cell survival through forward signaling, but the presence of reverse signaling has not been explored. To investigate the possibility of BAFF‐mediated reverse signaling, the expression patterns and functions of BAFF were analyzed in monocytic cell lines including the human macrophage‐like cell line, THP‐1. The expression of BAFF and its receptors was detected in monocytic cell lines, either before or after activation. The stimulation of BAFF induced the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)‐9, interleukin ‐8, and transforming growth factor‐β‐induced gene product (βig‐h3) and the upregulation of intercellular adhesion molecule‐1 in THP‐1 cells. The activation of mitogen‐activated protein kinase extracellular signal‐regulated kinase1/2 and nuclear factor‐κB was required for these responses. In addition to these stimulatory effects, BAFF‐mediated signaling inhibited processes involving cytoskeletal movement such as phagocytosis and transmigration through blocking the activation of phosphatidylinositol 3‐kinase/AKT and Rac‐1. Furthermore, murine primary macrophage culture such as peritoneal macrophages expressed BAFF and stimulation of it induced the expression of MMP‐9. These observations show that the reverse signaling initiated from BAFF induces the expression of inflammatory mediators while suppressing the cytoskeletal movements associated with phagocytosis and transmigration.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, the mechanical/dynamic property of the carbon fiber reinforced polymer concrete (CFRPC) was investigated to reduce the vibration/noise problems on rail slab. The CFRPC was fabricated with the different weight fraction of carbon fiber and different fiber length. The oxygen plasma treatment was performed to enhance the adhesion between the carbon fiber and epoxy resin. The surface of the carbon fiber with the oxygen plasma treatment was characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The flexural strength of the CFRPC was measured using 3-point bending test. Also, the frequency dependent variation of the stiffness and damping of the CFRPC were measured by impact test to characterize their ability to reduce the vibration. In this study, the CFRPC with 12mm of optimal fiber length and 2wt% of the optimal fiber content showed 25.12MPa flexural strength and 0.01954 damping value. Finally, it was found that the noise level of the railway using CFRPC sleeper was decreased by 4dB compared to that using the polymer concrete sleeper, from the impact test of the scaled model of the railway structure.</P>

Objective: The study’s aim was to develop and standardize a Korean version of the University of California San Diego Performance-based Skills Assessment (K-UPSA), which is used to evaluate the daily living function of patients with schizophrenia. Methods: Study participants were 78 patients with schizophrenia and 27 demographically matched healthy controls. We evaluated the clinical states and cognitive functions to verify K-UPSA’s reliability and validity. For clinical states, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Clinical Global Impression-Schizophrenia scale, and Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale and Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale-fourth revision were used. The Schizophrenia Cognition Rating Scale, Short-form of Korean-Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test were used to assess cognitive function. Results: The K-UPSA had statistically significant reliability and validity. The K-UPSA has high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha, 0.837) and test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient, 0.381-0.792; p<0.001). The K-UPSA had significant discriminant validity (p<0.001). Significant correlations between the K-UPSA’s scores and most of the scales and tests listed above demonstrated K-UPSA’s concurrent validity (p<0.001). Conclusion: The K-UPSA is useful to evaluate the daily living function in Korean patients with schizophrenia.

<P>Polyaniline (PANi)-grafted multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) composite is prepared by a two-step reaction sequence. MWNT is first functionalized with 4-aminobenzoic acid in polyphosphoric acid/phosphorous pentoxide as a “direct” Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction medium. The resultant 4-aminobenzoyl-functionalized MWNT is then treated with aniline using ammonium persulfate/aqueous hydrochloric acid to promote a chemical oxidative polymerization, leading to PANi-grafted MWNT composite. The resultant composite is characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and electrical conductivity measurement. The thermooxidative stability and electrical conductivity of PANi-grafted MWNT composite are improved compared to those of PANi. Specifically, the electrical conductivity of PANi-grafted MWNT is improved 10–900 times depending upon the level of doping. The capacitance of the composite is also greatly enhanced. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. <P>Mechanical damping systems have been widely used to various industrial structures and are mainly hydraulic and pneumatic devices nowadays. This article presents an experimental investigation of a nano colloidal damper. Particularly for colloidal damper, the hydraulic oil is replaced by a colloidal suspension, which is consisted from a nano-porous matrix with controlled architecture and a lyophobic fluid. Nano colloidal damper test rig and the measuring technique of the hysteresis were described in this study. Influence of the water volume and particle diameters upon the nano colloidal damper hysteresis was investigated. As a result, the proposed nano colloidal damper (NCD) is proved as an effective one, which can be replaced for the conventional hydraulic damper.</P>

Background/Aims: The prevalence of single-person households has rapidly increased in Korea. Individuals living alone and in rural areas may have a higher risk of various metabolic diseases due to differences in lifestyle. However, few studies have investigated the association of household size and residential area with health-related problems. This study aimed to evaluate the association of household size and residential area with risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 3,058 postmenopausal women from the 2008 to 2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). We examined the association between bone mineral density (BMD) and household size and residential area. Results: Individuals living in rural areas had significantly lower BMD of the lumbar spine than those living in an urban area. Subsequently, we divided the participants into four groups according to household size and residential areas. Lumbar spine BMD was significantly lower in individuals living in rural singleperson households than those in urban households with two or more individuals, even after adjustment for multiple confounding factors. In addition, individuals in rural single-person households had significantly greater odds of osteoporosis in the lumbar spine than those in urban households with two or more residents. Conclusions: Individuals in rural single-person households had significantly lower BMD and greater odds of osteoporosis in lumbar spine than urban households with two or more individuals. The results of this study suggest that individuals living in rural single-person households may benefit from more careful screening for osteoporosis.

<P>Natural products are valuable sources for drug discovery because they have a wide variety of useful chemical components and biological properties. A quick reevaluation of the potential therapeutic properties of established natural products was made possible by the recent development of the methodology and improvement in the accuracy of an automated high-throughput screening system. In this study, we screened natural product libraries to detect compounds with anticancer effects using HeLa cells. Of the 420 plant extracts screened, the extract of<I> Angelica gigas</I> Nakai (AGN) was the most effective in reducing cell viability of HeLa cells. Markers of apoptosis, such as exposure of phosphatidylserine and cleavage of caspase-7 and PARP, were increased by treatment with the AGN extract. Treatment of the AGN extract increased expression of PKR as well as ATF4 and CHOP, the unfolded protein response genes. In addition, cotreatment of doxorubicin and the AGN extract significantly increased doxorubicin-induced apoptosis in HeLa cells. Decursin and decursinol angelate, which were known to have anticancer effects, were the main components of the AGN extract. These results suggest that the extract of AGN containing, decursin and decursinol angelate, increases doxorubicin susceptibility.</P>
