        In the multivariate calibration model, we propose a new Empirical Bayes estimator(EB estimator) which enables us to predict the panameter of interest. The EB estimator is a compromised type between the classical estimator and the inverse estimator, and attains better precision than any other estimator in Brown(1982).

        In the simple calibration model, Maritz(1970) gave an empirical Bayes estimator of x_0 when y_01, …, y_0k on x_0 are observed. However, his estimator can not be applied in case k 1 which is occurred more often than not. We propose a new empirical Bayes estimator of x_0 which enables us to predict x_0 for all k and is a compromise between the classical estimator and the inverse estimator.

        In spite of the debate on fuzzy methods that they may provide an altermative to probabilistic and statistical methods, both approaches are going to give way to collaboration in the very practical fields. In this paper we review the area of fuzzy clustering in which the two approaches get along with each other. The current research interest and direction is discussed and a newly developed algorithm that prevents the output from being fuzziness as much as possible is presented with an illustration.

        Background : Microvascular angina or syndrom X is heterogenous and encompasses different pathogenetic entities. Several studies suggest that microvascular angina have good prognosis and occurs predominantly in postmenopausal women. Lipoprotein (a), total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, homocystein, CRP and fibrinogen are the independent risk factor of acute coronary syndrome and are the chief underlying cause of atherosclerosis. We investigated clinical characteristics and markers in patients with microvascular angina. Methods : We studies 23 patients diagnosed with microvascular angina and 16 control group with negative treadmill exercise test and no significant coronary angiogram. We investigated clinical characteristics in patients group and evaluated symptom during a follow-up period of 4.2± 2.5 month. Exercise time in treadmill exercise test was compared between patients and control group. We assessed the level of markers, such as lipoprotein (a), total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, homocystein, CRP and ESR in two groups. Results : There is no difference in age between two groups. Patients group had a tendency to increase in female, hypertension, DM, and smoking history, but there was no statistical significance difference. Exercise duration time was significantly decreased in patients with microvascular angina (p<0,05). Serum lipoprotein (a), total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholestrol, Triglyceride, ESR, Fibrinogen and Homocystein value were no significant difference between microvascular angina and control group. Only CRP was significantly high in patients with microvascular angina (p<0.05). Conclusion : There was no statistical significance difference in age, sex, hypertension, DM and smoking history between two groups but patients group had a tendency to increase the prevalence in hypertension, DM and smoking history, female. Also, Symptom improvement and disappearance in follow-up was presented in 11 patients of 19(57.9%). Exercise tolerance was worse in patients group than control group. CRP value was significantly higher in patients group than control group. There was no statistical significance difference in lipoprotein (a), total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, homocystein, ESR and Fibrinogen between two groups.

        Antioxidant Activity and Biological Activity of Specialty Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Extracts

        Specialty barley extracts were prepared and investigated for its antioxidant activity and biological activity. Hunter $L^*$ values of the Iksan 86 extracts had higher than that of the Iksan 87 and Zasoojeongchal extracts. The extraction yields of Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal was 8.08, 6.62, and 7.30%, respectively. The contents of total phenolic compounds of the Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal extracts were 16.24, 15.51, and 13.95 GAE mg/g of sample, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal extracts were 50.00, 33.27, and 7.56% at a 500 ppm, respectively. The samples showed an inhibition of xanthin oxidase. ACE inhibition effect of specialty barley extracts, Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal, was 39.81, 41.06, and 27.78%, respectively. Tyrosinase inhibition rates (%) of Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal extracts were 26.21, 24.57, and 20.00%, respectively. Results indicated that specialty barley extracts possesses various biological activities including antioxidative capacity, xanthin oxidase inhibition activity, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition activity, and tyrosinase inhibition activity.

        Effect of Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus (BaYMV)- Infested Soil on the Agronomic Characters of Three Different Barley Varieties

        Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus (BaYMV) caused significant reduction in barley yield and is difficult to control due to alive parasitic soil-borne fungus, Palmyra gamines that transmits the, virus. Previous studies have indicated that a virus-free soil could be infested by using virus-contaminated farming machineneries and implements. For the further confirmation of this finding, different proportions of BaYMV-infested soil were mixed into virus free soil. Three barley varieties (Hordum vulgarae, cv "Olbori", "Baegdong" and "Sacheon 6") were sown in pots treated with different rate of P. graminis-infested soil ranging from 0% to 100% in October 20, 2001. Results showed that BaYMV infection increased as the rate of infested soil increased. Initial symptoms were observed in a pots treated with 10% infested soil in all the 3 varieties of barley. "Olbori" had about 5% infection in 20% infested soil and about 10% infection in 40% or 50% infested soil and about 20% infection in 60% infested soil. In "Baegdong", the trend of BYMV occurrence was similar with "Olbori" but the time of severe infection was earlier than "Olbori". BaYMV infection in "Sacheon 6" was even earlier than "Baegdong" with much more severe symptoms than "Baegdong". The growth rate of barley was affected by about 19-22% when grown in 20% infested soil. As the rate of BaYMV infested soil increased the heading date was delayed but the maturing date was early in "Olbori" and "Sacheon 6". Also, reduction rate of culm length in 3 varieties increased with increase of infested soil content. However, "Olbori" showed the highest reduction. "Sacheon 6", have been characterized with long spike length, however was significantly reduced as the infested soil increased. On the other hand, spike length of "Olbori" was not significantly affected despite of increased of infested soil. The reduction rate of 1000 kernel weight was higher in large kernel size cultivar "Sacheon 6" and "Olbori" than small kernel size "Baegdong" as increase of BaYMV-infested soil content.

      • Neurite Outgrowth on Nanocomposite Scaffolds Synthesized from PLGA and Carboxylated Carbon Nanotubes

        <P>Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been suggested as suitable materials for biomedical applications, especially in the neural area. It is essential not only to investigate the biocompatibility of CNTs with the neural system but also to determine proper methods for applying CNTs to neuronal growth. This work represents the first application of CNTs by electrospun poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffolds for a neural system. We synthesized electrospun nanocomposites of PLGA and single-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized by carboxylic acid groups (c-SWNTs), and investigated neurite outgrowth from SH-SY5Y cells on these nanocomposites as compared to that on fibrous PLGA alone. Cells on our PLGA/c-SWNT nanocomposite showed significantly enhanced mitochondrial function and neurite outgrowth compared to cells on PLGA alone. We concluded that c-SWNTs incorporated into fibrous PLGA scaffolds exerted a positive role on the health of neural cells.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have distinctive characteristics such as high conductivity which could help the promotion of neuronal function. Electrospun nanocomposites of poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and CNTs were synthesized, and neurite outgrowth and mitochondrial function of human neuroblastoma cells were investigated on these nanocomposites and compared with that on fibrous PLGA alone.       • Comparison of impacts of intraperitoneal saline instillation with and without pulmonary recruitment maneuver on post-laparoscopic shoulder pain prevention: A randomized controlled trial

        Objective: Intraperitoneal isotonic saline instillation (SI) and pulmonary recruitment maneuver (RM) were indicated to alleviate post-laparoscopic shoulder pain (PLSP) effectively. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of the single strategy using SI alone and the combined strategy using SI and RM on PLSP reduction. Methods: Subjects undergoing elective gynecologic laparoscopy were randomly allocated to a control group (no intervention, n=48) and two intervention groups (single strategy of SI alone, n=48; combined strategy of SI and RM, n=48). In the control group, carbon dioxide was removed only via passive evacuation through the port sites at the completion of the laparoscopic procedure. In the saline instillation group, 20-mL/kg of body weight SI was performed. In the combined strategy group, RM using five pulmonary inflations was performed, in addition to SI. The PLSP scores, which were the primary outcome, were recorded using a visual analog scale postoperatively. Results: The PLSP scores 24 and 48 hours after surgery were significantly lower in the two intervention groups than in the control group (P = 0.014 and P = 0.001, respectively), while no significant differences were observed between the two intervention groups. Conclusions: The single strategy using SI alone is as effective as the combined strategy of SI and RM for removing residual carbon dioxide and consequently preventing PLSP. Therefore, considering the potential risks of pulmonary or hemodynamic complications associated with RM, the single strategy using SI alone might be a better choice than the combined strategy. Conclusion: In conclusion, the combined strategy using SI and RM was not superior to the single strategy using SI alone in terms of PLSP reduction. Furthermore, the single strategy using SI alone is simple and safe; thus, it can be employed to avoid the potential risks of pulmonary or hemodynamic complications associated with RM.
