Most caterpillars, the larvae of butterflies and moths(Lepidoptera), are herbivorous. Sometimes they are regarded as serious agricultural pest that cause to damage agricultural produce, whereas some species such as Bombyx mori is known to be valued as sources of silk. Even though their major role in the ecosystem, details of biology are poorly known for most species. This study has been carried out to identify larvae and to acquire useful biological information of insect larvae through rearing from 1997 to 2014 in HECRI(Holoce Ecosystem Conservation Research Institution). From 2012 HECRI are carrying out ‘Larvae Identification and Specimen Security of Primary Endemic Moths in Korea Peninsula through Rearing’ supported by National Institute of Biological Resources(NIBR). Of these this study is the list about special caterpillars feeding on the foliage Willow Trees (Salix spp.) Total 143 species belonging to 13 families were collected and identified 69 species belonging to 12 families. Among them Willow Treesdependent monophagous caterpillars are 34 species belonging to 5 families, oligophagous 36 species belonging to 3 families and polyphagous 16 species belonging to 12 families. The dominant family is Geometridae(51 species), second is Noctuidae(35 species) and followed by Notodontidae(21 species).
수혈후 발생한 Acute Graft-Versus-Host-Disease 1 예

A 46 year old woman was admitted to the Korea University Gynecology department for the resection of a myoma uteri. Upon admission, preoperative laboratory findings revealed a low hemoglobin level of 8.6 gm/dl, Two units of fresh whole blood donated by her two sons were transfused and her post transfusion hemoglobin was corrected to 10.5 gm/dl. On April 22, she received a transabdominal hysterectomy under general anesthesia during which no significant events occured. Aside from fever and coughing, the postoperative course was uneventful She was discharged seven days after surgery. The patient was readmitted on May 3, with chilling, diarrhea, generalized ache, skin rash, diffuse abdominal pain and tenderness. She was send to ICU, but her condition deteriorated rapidly and her skin rash progressed to generalized erythroderma and icterus was noted. Thereafter she became confused, hypotensive and oligurie. Her blood studies revealed pancytopenia and atypical lymphocytes. The patient was died on May 22, despite all efforts. Although the exact causes of death are still unknown, the presumed diagnosis is acute transfusion associated graft-versus-host disease based on clinical symptoms, signs and laboratory data.
Prenylated Flavonoids as Tyrosinase Inhibitors

In order to find new tyrosinase inhibitors and the effects of prenyl residue on flavonoid molecules, eight prenylated and three synthetic vinylated flavonoids were examined on their inhibitory effect against tyrosinase activity. From the results, kuwanon C, papyriflavonol A, sanggenon D and sophoflavescenol were found to possess the considerable inhibitory activity. Especially, sanggenon D is revealed as a potent inhibitor ($IC_{50}$ =7.3$\mu$ M), compared to the reference compound, kojic acid ($IC_{50}$ =24.8 $\mu$M). However, the prenylation with isoprenyl group or the vinylation to flavonoid molecules did not enhance tyrosinase inhibitory activity.
Puccinia sp.에 의한 이팝나무 잎녹병 발생 및 중간기주 보고

2018년 7월 전라남도 강진군의 가로수 전체 이팝나무에 심각한 녹병증상이 발견되어 잎을 채집하였다. 채집한 이팝나무 잎앞면에서 황색 및 갈색의 병반과 잎 뒷면에서 황색의 녹포자기가 관찰되었고, 현미경아래에서 41.2 μm 크기의 구형 녹포자와28.84 μm 크기의 구형 하포자가 확인되었다. 이팝나무 녹병균의 부분 small subunit rRNA, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1, 5.8S rRNA, ITS2, 부분 large subunit rRNA 염기서열을 이용하여 계통학적 유연관계를 분석한 결과, 대나무 녹병균으로 보고되어져 있는 Puccinia kusanoi와 가까운 근연관계를 가지고 있었다. 또한 2019년 5월 무위사로 이팝나무 주변에 식재된 대나무에서도 녹병 병징이 관찰되었고, 잎 뒷면에서 동포자퇴와 동포자를 확인하였으며, 대나무에서 채집한 동포자의 염기서열분석 결과, 이팝나무 녹병균과 100% 일치하였다. 본 논문은 대나무 녹병균으로 알려진 P. kusanoi와 근연관계가 가까운 새로운 종 Puccinia sp. JCK-KCFR1 strain (MT729824)가 국내에서 이팝나무와 대나무를 기주교대하며 녹병을 발생시키는 것을 처음으로 보고한다. In July 2018, a serious rust symptom was found throughout the fringe trees planted in Gangjin-gun, Korea. Yellow and brown spots were observed on the adaxial (topside) surface of the collected fringe tree leaves, and yellow color aecia were observed on the abaxial (underside) surface leaves. The size of aeciospore and urediniospores of JCK-KCFR1 strain were measured to 41.2 μm (Φ) and 28.84 μm (Φ) with a light microscope. Phylogenetic analysis of the small subunit rRNA, internal transcribed spacer, and large subunit rRNA region indicated that JCK-KCFR1 strain is novel species of the genus Puccinia and closely related to Puccinia kusanoi, which has been reported a rust pathogen on bamboo. In May 2019, rust symptoms were also discovered on the bamboo leaves planted around the fringe tree on Muwisa-ro, and their telia and teliospores were observed on the abaxial leaf surfaces of the bamboo with 100% sequence homology with the rust of the fringe tree. This is the first report that Puccinia sp. JCK-KCFR1 is a new species that requires both primary (fringe tree) and alternative (bamboo) host plants to complete its life cycle in Korea.
Anti-Tumor Effect of IDF-11774, an Inhibitor of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1, on Melanoma

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive skin cancers. Hypoxia contributes to the aggressiveness of melanoma by promoting cancer growth and metastasis. Upregulation of cyclin D1 can promote uncontrolled cell proliferation in melanoma, whereas stimulation of cytotoxic T cell activity can inhibit it. Epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a critical role in melanoma metastasis. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a main transcriptional mediator that regulates many genes related to hypoxia. CoCl2 is one of the most commonly used hypoxia-mimetic chemicals in cell culture. In this study, inhibitory effects of IDF-11774, an inhibitor of HIF-1α, on melanoma growth and metastasis were examined using cultured B16F10 mouse melanoma cells and nude mice transplanted with B16F10 melanoma cells in the presence or absence of CoCl2-induced hypoxia. IDF-11774 reduced HIF-1α upregulation and cell survival, but increased cytotoxicity of cultured melanoma cells under CoCl2-induced hypoxia. IDF-11774 also reduced tumor size and local invasion of B16F10 melanoma in nude mice along with HIF-1α downregulation. Expression levels of cyclin D1 in melanoma were increased by CoCl2 but decreased by IDF-11774. Apoptosis of melanoma cells and infiltration of cytotoxic T cells were increased in melanoma after treatment with IDF-11774. EMT was stimulated by CoCl2, but restored by IDF- 11774. Overall, IDF-11774 inhibited the growth and metastasis of B16F10 melanoma via HIF-1α downregulation. The growth of B16F10 melanoma was inhibited by cyclin D1 downregulation and cytotoxic T cell stimulation. Metastasis of B16F10 melanoma was inhibited by EMT suppression.
Genetic Variants in Interleukin-2 and Risk of Lymphoma among Children in Korea

To estimate the genetic susceptibility for childhood lymphoma, we conducted an association study for 23 cases and 148 controls. Total 1536 tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected in 138 candidate gene regions related to immune responses, apoptosis, the cell cycle, and DNA repair. Twelve SNPs were significantly associated with the risk of lymphoma ($P_{trend}$ <0.05) in six genes ($IL1RN$, $IL2$, $IL12RB1$, $JAK3$, $TNFRSF13B$, and $XRCC3$). The most significant association was seen for $IL2$ variant rs2069762 ($OR_{TG+GG}$ vs. TT=3.43 (1.29-9.11), $P_{trend}$=0.002, min$P$=0.005). These findings suggest that common genetic variants in $IL2$ might play a role in the pathogenesis of childhood lymphoma.
