        Protective Effect of Baicalin Against Carbon Tetrachloride–Induced Acute Hepatic Injury in Mice

        <P>This study examined the effects of baicalin, a bioactive flavonoid isolated from <I>Scutellariae Radix</I>, on carbon tetrachloride (CCl<SUB>4</SUB>)-induced liver injury. Mice were treated intraperitoneally with 0.5 ml/kg CCl<SUB>4</SUB> and different groups of animals received 25, 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg baicalin. At 24 h after the CCl<SUB>4</SUB> treatment, the level of serum aminotransferases and lipid peroxidation was significantly elevated, whereas the hepatic glutathione content was decreased. These changes were attenuated by baicalin. The histological studies showed that baicalin inhibited the portal inflammation, centrizonal necrosis, and Kupffer cell hyperplasia, which are the three most common characteristics of CCl<SUB>4</SUB>-induced liver damage. The serum level and mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor-α were markedly increased by the CCl<SUB>4</SUB> treatment but suppressed by baicalin. The mRNA and protein expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase and heme oxygenase-1 increased significantly at 24 h after the CCl<SUB>4</SUB> treatment. Baicalin attenuated the increase in the protein and gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase but augmented the increase in those of heme oxygenase-1. These findings suggest that baicalin protects hepatocytes from the oxidative damage caused by CCl<SUB>4</SUB>, and this protection is likely due to the induction of HO-1 expression and the inhibition of the proinflammatory mediators.</P>

        A 6 years old Schunauzer dog (7.2kg, intact female) with history of hematuria for two days was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. Complete blood cell count showed no significant abnormalities and serum chemistry profile showed increased phosphate profile. On urinanalysis, there was evidence of bacterial infection. On ultrasonographic evaluation, irregular renal contour and increased echogenecity, pelvic and uretral dilation, and thickening of urinary bladder wall were observed. Based on these finding, the dog was diagnosed as pyelonephritis. The dog was treated with antibiotics based on antimicrobial susceptibility test results, then successfully resolved after 8 weeks of treatment.

        QUAL2E model was applied to assess the water quality variations for the downstream of the Han River. The varied flow analysis is performed in the reach of Paldang dam to Indogyo considering the effect of Jamsil submerged weir. A sensitivity analysis was made to determine the significant reaction coefficients and an optimization technique by BFGS method was used to estimate them. The calibration and verification were performed by using observed water quality data for the Han River. The calculated pollutant concentrations showed good agreements with the observed. The predictions of water quality in the river were made for the various discharge conditions and wastewater treatment alternatives.

        We studied the native defects of dilute magnetic semiconductors Zn₁-xFexSe epilayer by using SAW device. The energy gap of Zn₁-xFexSe for each epilayer(x=0.0213, 0.0915) was 2.57eV, 2.74eV at room temperature (294K). The trap level for x=0.0213, 0.0915 were calculated by measuring Transverse Acoustoelectric Voltage(TAV). Also we can calculated cross section.

      • Titanium isopropoxide의 가수분해에 의한 TiO₂ Power 합성

        Isopropanol 내에서 titanium isopropoxide의 가수분해반응속도를 자외선분광법에 의하여 측정하였다. H₂O 농도 및 온도의 변화에 따른 반응속도상수를 Guggenheim method로 계산하였다. 이 실험 결과 titanium isopropoxide의 가수분해반응은 이분자 반응이 ?? mechanism 으로 관여하는 것으로 추정되었다. 또한 titanium isopropoxide의 가수분해에 의한 TiO₂ 분말합성에 있어서 pH 및 온도영향을 연구하였다. 합성된 분말과 소결체에 대하여 SEM, XRD, IR 및 입도분석을 통하여 characterization 하였다. TiO₂분말 합성결과 pH가 높을수록, 또한 반응온도가 높을수록 반응시간이 짧아졌으나, 낮은 온도에서 반응시킬 경우에 입자의 agglomeration이 적어짐을 알았다. 생성된 입자는 비정질의 gel 상태였으며, 소결시킨 후는 rutile, 또는 rutile과 anatase의 혼합물인 titanium dioxide인 것으로 나타났다. 소결하기 전의 TiO₂ 분말의 IR분석에서는 -OH, -CH₃ 등 유기물 그룹의 흡수 피크가 나타났으나 소결한 후의 시료에서는 그러한 피크가 나타나지 않았다. Rates of hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide in isopropanol were investigated by UV spectroscopy. The change of reaction rate according to temperature and concentration of H₂O was calculated by Guggenheim method. From these results, it could be estimated that the hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide was ?? mechanism involving both of titanium isopropoxide and H₂O. pH and temperature dependence of TiO₂ powder preparation were also investigated. Particle sizes and size distributions of dried powders were determined using size distribution analysis and SEM(scaning electron microscope), and the crystal phases in dried powder and in sintered powder were analyzed using powder XRD method. The reaction rate of TiO₂ powder preparation was faster at higher temperature and higher pH, however more agglomeration of particles occured at high temperature. The phase of dried powders was noncrystalline gel state but the sintering of the powder at 800℃ changed its phase to crystalline rutile or anatase. Absorption peaks of organic group such as -OH, -CH₃ in IR spectra of dried powder disappeared after sintering.

        This study attempts to optimize reinforced concrete two way slabs with each spanning condition, based on the concept of ultimate limit state and of serviceability limit state. The variable adoped in this mathematical model consist of design variables including sectional sizes and reinforcement areas per unit width of middle strips and column slrips of slab. The cost function is taken as the objective function in the formulation optimal problem. A number of constraint equations involving flexural stress, reinforcement ratio, deflection and side limit is derived in accordance with BSI cp110 requirements on the basis of limit state design theory. Both objective function and constraints equation derived into terms of design variables and analysis variables generally become high degree nonlinear programming problems. Optimal algorithm that can optimize a structure synthetically earring on both analysis and design of a slab with each spanning condition. The developed algorithm is directly applied to two adjacent edges discontinuous slab, one long edge discontinuous slab, one short edge discontinuous slab and interior panel slab in order to assure validity of the algorithm and the possibility to optimize reinforced two way slabs. From this research it is found that the althorithm developed in this study is applicable to optimization of reinforced two way slabs and it converges to a optimal solution with 2 to 3 iterations regardless of initial variables. The results shows that an economical design can be possible when campared with conventional designs.

        We have measured the energy gap in ZnSe as a function of temperature by Laser-Generaeted Photocharge Voltage Spectroscopy(PVS). Trap levels were calculated quasi equibrium, peak shape, initial rise methods. And We have measured the Photocharge Voltage as a function of temperature with varing heating rate. The trapping cross-section of ZnSe was calculated by the methods of Grossweiner.
