<P>Heme oxygenase-1-derived carbon monoxide prevents inflammatory vascular disorders. To date, there is no clear evidence that HO-1/CO prevents endothelial dysfunction associated with the downregulation of endothelial NO synthesis in human endothelial cells stimulated with TNF-α. Here, we found that the CO-releasing compound CORM-2 prevented TNF-α-mediated decreases in eNOS expression and NO/cGMP production, without affecting eNOS promoter activity, by maintaining the functional activity of the <I>eNOS</I> mRNA 3′-untranslated region. By contrast, CORM-2 inhibited MIR155HG expression and miR-155-5p biogenesis in TNF-α-stimulated endothelial cells, resulting in recovery of the 3′-UTR activity of <I>eNOS</I> mRNA, a target of miR-155-5p. The beneficial effect of CORM-2 was blocked by an NF-κB inhibitor, a miR-155-5p mimic, a HO-1 inhibitor and siRNA against HO-1, indicating that CO rescues TNF-α-induced eNOS downregulation through NF-κB-responsive miR-155-5p expression via HO-1 induction; similar protective effects of ectopic HO-1 expression and bilirubin were observed in endothelial cells treated with TNF-α. Moreover, heme degradation products, except iron and <I>N</I>-acetylcysteine prevented H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-mediated miR-155-5p biogenesis and eNOS downregulation. These data demonstrate that CO prevents TNF-α-mediated eNOS downregulation by inhibiting redox-sensitive miR-155-5p biogenesis through a positive forward circuit between CO and HO-1 induction. This circuit may play an important preventive role in inflammatory endothelial dysfunction associated with human vascular diseases.</P>

<P>The abnormal proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in arterial walls is an important pathogenic factor of vascular disorders such as diabetic atherosclerosis. We have reported the anti-inflammatory effect of an aqueous extract from <I>Prunella vulgaris</I> (APV) in vascular endothelial cell. In the present study, APV exhibited inhibitory effects on high glucose-stimulated VSMC proliferation, migration, and invasion activities, inducing G<SUB>1</SUB> cell cycle arrest with downregulation of cyclins and CDKs and upregulation of the CKIs, p21<SUP>waf1/cip1</SUP> and p27<SUP>kip1</SUP>. Furthermore, APV dose dependently suppressed the high glucose-induced matrix metalloproteinase activity. High glucose-induced phosphorylation of ERK, p38 MAPK, was decreased by the pretreatment of APV. NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B activation by high glucose was attenuated by APV, as an antioxidant. APV attenuated the high glucose-induced decrease of nuclear factor E2-related factor-2 (Nrf2) translocation and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression. Intracellular cGMP level was also increased by APV treatment. These results demonstrate that APV may inhibit VSMC proliferation via downregulating ROS/NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B /ERK/p38 MAPK pathways. In addition, APV has a beneficial effect by the interaction of Nrf2-mediated NO/cGMP with HO-1, suggesting that <I>Prunella vulgaris</I> may be useful in preventing diabetic atherosclerosis.</P>
황토 기포콘크리트를 이용한 식생용 인공토양골재의 이화학적 특성 평가

This study examined the practical application of cement foamed concrete with natural hwang-toh to develop artificial soil aggregates for vegetation. The soil aggregates with the particle size between 1 and 10 mm were produced from the fragmentation of the foamed concrete. The physiochemical properties, including apparent density, pH value, particle distribution, coefficient of permeability, EC, CEC, C/N and total amount of organic matter, of the produced soil aggregates were tested and compared with the requirements for vegetation recommended in the landscape specification. The produced artificial soil aggregates achieved the apparent density, coefficient of permeability, and CEC value satisfying the requirements of the landscape specification, whereas pH, EC, C/N values, and total amount of organic matter of the soil aggregates did not satisfy the specification requirements. To utilize the foamed concrete as soil aggregates for vegetation, the additional approaches such as compulsory neutralization and the addition of organic fertilizers would be required for appropriate values of EC, CEC, and C/N.

Inconel 690 alloy has widely been used in power plant and high temperature facilities because it has high thermal resistance and toughness. But, we have little design data about the creep behaviors of the alloy. Therefore, in this study, an apparatus has been designed and built for conduction creep tests under constant load conditions. A series of creep tests on Inconel 690 alloy have been performed to get the basic design data and life prediction of inconel products and we have gotten the following results. First, the stress exponents decrease as the test temperatures increase. Secondly, the creep activation energy gradually decreases as the stresses becomes bigger. Thirdly, the constant of Larson-Moller parameters on this alloy is estimated about 10. And last, the fractographs at the creep rupture show both the ductile and the brittle fracture according to the creep conditions.
구강 악성 흑색종에서 PCNA 발현에 관한 면역조직화학적 연구

Malignant melanoma arising from the mucosa of head and neck region was rare and showed poor prognosis. Some of malignant melanoma were transformed from benign melanotic lesion. Malignant melanoma had high cellular proliferation and rapid growth. The percentage of PCNA-positive cell (labeling index) is high in many malignant tumor. So we compared the pattern of PCNA expression in the melanotic lesion. We performed the immunohistochemical study in malignant melanoma(19 cases), benign melanotic macule(24 cases) and normal mucosa(20 cases) were diagnosed in Seoul National University Dental Hospital between 1980 and 2000. Positive PCNA staining was found mainly in malignant melanoma. The mean PCNA expression in malignant melanoma, melanotic macule, normal tissue were 29.2%, 1.4%, 0%, respectively. Significant differences in PCNA expression were noted between malignant melanoma and melanotic macule(p<0.01), normal mucosa(p<0.01). These result suggested that the PCNA expression seems to be used as a diagnostic indicator for malignancy in malignant melanoma and melanotic lesion.

As the machine tool industry progresses, the performance of cutting tools also needs to be of good quality and specialized. If the existing metal cutting tool tip is coated properly, its life would be longer and the machining of a difficult-to-cut material also could be possible. For the development of the high quality cutting tool, the applicabilities of TiAlN coating deposited by PVD on the cutting insert were experimentally investigated. The various measurements, such as, SEM micrograph, XRD pattern, AFM surface morphology, and hardness were performed to cross-check the possibility and availability of TiAlN coated tool in the field. The effects of it is successful and we hope to see good results in many fields.

Pneumothorax is a rare complication of central venous catheterization but it may lead to serious outcome if left undetected. It may occur immediately after the prodedure or be delayed a few hours to days. During general anesthesia with positive pressure ventilation, initially small-sized pneumothorax may become large by continuous leakage of airflow into the pleural cavity. This may lead to the development of tension pneumothorax which is hazardous to the patients if unrecognized. I report a case of delayed pneumothorax during general anesthesia with positive pressure ventilation after a failure of left subclavian venous catheterization. In this case the initial post-insertion chest X-ray was normal.
파라미터 최적화를 이용한 소형 헬리콥터 기본 설계 기법 연구┼

헬리콥터 설계 과정에서 초기 외형 형상 및 치수 결정을 위한 적절한 기본 설계 변수값들의 결정 여부는 설계의 성패를 좌우한다. 그러나 이러한 기본 설계 변수들은 보통 변수 상호간 서로 상반되게 비행 성능에 영향을 주므로 설계 목적에 부합되는 최적의 설계 변수값을 결정하기가 쉽지 않다. 본 연구에서는 소형 헬리콥터의 주요 성능 분석 모델과 최적화 기법을 통하여 기본 설계 변수를 결정하는 과정을 고찰하였다. 그리고 유사 기종에 대한 실제 설계 데이터와 남경항공항천대학이 보유하고 있는 최적화 전산 프로그램을 활용하여 주어진 설계 요구 성능의 헬리콥터에 대한 기본 설계 변수값을 계산하고 외형 설계를 수행하였다. A preliminary design method for multipurpose small helicopter using parameter optimization, was studied. The analytical models of design optimization was reviewed in terms of flight performances according to the design requirements. The computations of real preliminary design parameters were carried out in virtue of the in-house computer program for optimal design at NUAA and the determination of helicopter configuration and sizing was also performed in accordance with calculated results.
