        Activation of toll-like receptor 3 attenuates alcoholic liver injury by stimulating Kupffer cells and stellate cells to produce interleukin-10 in mice

        Background & Aims: The important function of toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 in Kupffer cells and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) has been well documented in alcoholic liver injury. However, little is known about the role of TLR3. Thus, we tested whether TLR3 activation in HSCs and Kupffer cells could attenuate alcoholic liver injury in vivo, and investigated its possible mechanism in vitro. Methods: Alcoholic liver injury was achieved by feeding wild type (WT), TLR3 knockout (TLR3<SUP>-/-</SUP>) and interleukin (IL)-10<SUP>-/-</SUP> mice with high-fat diet plus binge ethanol drinking for 2weeks. To activate TLR3, polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) was injected into mice. For in vitro studies, HSCs and Kupffer cells were isolated and treated with poly I:C. Results: In WT mice, poly I:C treatment reduced alcoholic liver injury and fat accumulation by suppressing nuclear factor-κB activation and sterol response element-binding protein 1c expression in the liver. In addition, freshly isolated HSCs and Kupffer cells from poly I:C-treated mice showed enhanced expression of IL-10 compared to controls. Infiltrated macrophage numbers and the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and IL-6 on these cells were decreased after poly I:C treatment. In vitro, poly I:C treatment enhanced the expression of IL-10 via a TLR3-dependent mechanism in HSCs and Kupffer cells. Finally, the protective effects of poly I:C on alcoholic liver injury were diminished in TLR3<SUP>-/-</SUP> and IL-10<SUP>-/-</SUP> mice. Conclusions: TLR3 activation ameliorates alcoholic liver injury via the stimulation of IL-10 production in HSCs and Kupffer cells. TLR3 could be a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of alcoholic liver injury.

        Cysticerocosis in the nervous system is well known and has been reported by several authors worldwide. An intramedullary thoracic cysticercosis case recorded here is extremely rare. It was characterized by urinary retention, abdominal distension, paraplegia with anesthesia below T4-dermatome for 4 years in a 49-year-old male farmer. We have surgically removed the intramedullary cyst. Two other our cases of ventricular cysticercosis are also added to our previous reports.

        Conray-60을 이용한 뇌실조영술의 임상적 경험

        Adequate demonstration of the structures of the posterior fossa and the midline cerebral ventricular system is one of the most difficult problems in neuroradiology. During the last 2 years, we have performed conray ventriculography on 31 patients with clinical evidence of intracranial hypertension, in whom posterior fossa lesion was suspected or a supratentorial hemispheric lesion was not evident by carotid angiography. The patient is placed in the supine position and drilled 5cm above the nasion and 3cm to one side of the midline of nondominant hemisphere. A No. 20 spinal needle is inserted through the tract and aimed toward the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle. About 4 to 6cc of conray is introduced into the anterior horn with head flexed. The head is slowly extended. Serial roentgenograms are used to follow the conray trough the ventricular system.

        국내시장에 유통중인 국내산과 외국산 냉동 삼겹살의 품질 특성 비교

        This study was carried out to compare qualities of the imported frozen pork bellies (Danish and Swedish) with those of the domestic frozen bellies (A and B). Samples were analyzed for compositions, microorganisms and physicochemical characteristics (TBARS, VBN, pH, color, cooking loss). The results of the proximate analysis of compositions showed that moisture, crude protein and crude ash of Swedish belly were higher than those of the other bellies. On the other hand, crude fat of Swedish belly was the lowest (25.28±2.02%). Especially, there was a significant difference in crude protein(P$lt; 0.01). Total plate counts (TPC) of the domestic pork belly (B) showed the highest value(10^(5)SCFU/㎠). TBARS (Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substance) values were less than 4.0㎎MA/㎏ in all samples, which is the threshold for ediblity. VBN (Volatile Basic Nitrogen) values were less than 20㎎/100g in all samples. In analysis of meat color, lightness (CIE L*) and redness (CIE a*), values for domestic belly (A) were significantly higher than those of the others(P$lt; 0.01). The range of pH values was from 5.62 to 5.78, but there were no significant differences among the samples.

        STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF GALACTIC δ SCUTI STARS: REVISITED

        <P>We present statistical characteristics of 1578 δ Scuti stars including nearby field stars and cluster member stars within the Milky Way. We obtained 46% of these stars (718 stars) from work by Rodríguez and collected the remaining 54% of stars (860 stars) from other literature. We updated the entries with the latest information of sky coordinates, color, rotational velocity, spectral type, period, amplitude, and binarity. The majority of our sample is well characterized in terms of typical period range (0.02-0.25 days), pulsation amplitudes (<0.5 mag), and spectral types (A-F type). Given this list of δ Scuti stars, we examined relations between their physical properties (i.e., periods, amplitudes, spectral types, and rotational velocities) for field stars and cluster members, and confirmed that the correlations of properties are not significantly different from those reported in Rodríguez's work. All the δ Scuti stars are cross-matched with several X-ray and UV catalogs, resulting in 27 X-ray and 41 UV-only counterparts. These counterparts are interesting targets for further study because of their uniqueness in showing δ Scuti-type variability and X-ray/UV emission at the same time.         원발성 간암에서 PIVKA-II 및 Lens Culinaris Agglutinin-A 반응성 Alpha-fetoprotein(AFP-L3)의 임상적 유용성

        Background/Aims: Des-γ-carboxy prothrombin(DCP), a protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II(PIVKA-II), and Lens culinaris agglutinin-A reactive AFP-L3 have been reported to be useful markers for the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the present study, both the PIVKA-II and AFP-L3 were analyzed and compared with a conventional AFP to determine its usefulness, specificity and sensitivity in the diagnosis of HCC. Methods: Sera were collected from 108 patients consisting of 17 patients with chronic hepatitis, 22 patients with liver cirrhosis and 69 patients with HCC. The AFP-L3 was determined by an lectin affinity electrophoresis coupled with an antibody-affinity blotting. Level of DCP was measured by an enzyme immunoassay with an anti-DCP monoclonal antibody. Results: The sensitivity and specificity of PIVKA-II and AFP L3 were 49.3% and 89.5%, and 32.5% and 85.7%, respectively. No significant correlation was found between the PIVKA-II or AFP L3 and serum AFP. No correlation was found etween the PIVKA-II or AFP L3 and the characteristics of HCC.         육류의 안전성 평가기술 연구

        Microorganisms were taken at the surfaces of pork and beef. Microbial sampling of pork was carried out at 4 steps, i.e. immediately after slaughtering(PA), at 24hrs after slaughtering(PB), before deboning(PC) and after deboning(PD). And the sampling of beef was carried out at 5 steps, i.e. immediately after slaughtering(BA), at 6hrs after slaughtering(BB), at 24hrs after slaughtermg(BC), before deboning(BD) and after deboning(BE). Total plate count was significantly higher in the step before deboning(PC) than in the other steps of pork processing(P$lt;0.05). The numbers of coliforms and E. coli increased in proportion to the total plate counts. Microbial contamination was significantly higher in the step before deboning than any other step of beef processing(P$lt;0.05). The step immediately after slaughtering(BA) was the next highest level in microbial contamination. The results of multiple regression analysis among total plate counts, coliforms and E. coli showed that determination coefficients(R²) were as high as 0.8307-0.9971. This meant that E. coli increased as total plate counts and coliforms increased. The results of PMP(pathogen model program) analysis showed that pathogenic microorganisms grew similarly in low ambient temperature(5℃), while they grew faster as ther initial numbers were high. In the same initial number, growth rate was 10 times faster in 15℃ than in low ambient temperature(5℃) and 4 times faster in 25℃ than in 15℃.
