      • Prepare of PU-RGO composite and changing properties of chain extender

Vol.2016 No.1

Recently, electronic and smart devices have been faced on heat dissipation problems. Polyurethane has been known as a polymeric material that has good mechanical strength so it has been widely used as adhesive, film, and etc. In order to be used as heat dissipation for electronics devices, PU/graphene composite materials has been widely studied. In this work, we synthesized PU-RGO composites by chemical method to improve both thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. We observed chemical structure, morphology, thermal properties and adhesion strength of PU-RGO composites with various type of chain extender.

Utility of QuantiFERON-TB In-Tube Test for Differentiating Active Tuberculosis from Latent Tuberculosis Infection in an Intermediate Burden Country

        최석훈,Bum Sik Chin,Sang Hoon Han,Han Sung Lee,Chang Oh Kim,Su Jin Jeong,Hee Kyung Choi,Myung Soo Kim,Jun Yong Choi,Young Goo Song,June Myung Kim 대한감염학회 2008 Infection and Chemotherapy Vol.40 No.6

Background : The aim of the present study was to assess the contribution of a QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube test (QFT-IT) in differentiating active tuberculosis (TB) from latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) by quantifying interferon-γ levels. Materials and Methods : We retrospectively reviewed clinical records of 314 patients older than 15 years who had performed QFT-IT between July 2006 and August 2007 at a tertiary care teaching hospital. Results : Subjects with active TB (n=81, culture confirmed active TB in 40 subjects) and LTBI (n=76) were included. Mean±SD IFN-γ levels were 4.96±3.98 IU/mL (range -0.08-10) for all subjects with active TB, 4.54±4.05 IU/mL (range -0.08-10) for culture confirmed active TB, and 4.11±3.57 IU/mL (range 0.35-10) for subjects with LTBI. The quantitative results of QFT-IT on IFN-γ levels between all the subjects with active TB and those with LTBI were not statistically significant (P=0.16). The result was similar when compared between those with culture confirmed active TB and those with LTBI, showing little statistical significance (P=0.554). Conclusion : The production of IFN-γ measured by QFT-IT showed no correlation between its level and the activity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. These results suggest that measuring IFN-γ using QFT-IT might not be useful for distinguishing active TB from LTBI.

Vol.24 No.2

Telemetry system is a communication system that measures and transmits various signals in the aircraft to the ground for collecting and monitoring flight data during the development of unmanned air vehicle and satellite launch vehicles. With the recent development of wireless communication technology, it is becoming important to apply encryption of telemetry system to prepare with security threats that may occur during flight data transmission. In this paper, we suggested and implemented the application method of ARIA-256, Korean standard encryption algorithm, to apply encryption to telemetry system. In consideration of the block error propagation and the telemetry frame characteristics, frame is encrypted using the CTR mode and can apply the Reed-solomon codes recommended by CCSDS. ARIA algorithm and cipher frame are implemented in FPGA, and simulation and hardware verification system confirmed continuous frames encryption.

From Rite of Passage to Rite of Sacrifice: Modern Oedipus and Dysfunctional Family in Polly Stenham’s That Face

Vol.15 No.2

The paper reads Stenham’s debut play That Face as a tragedy of ritual paucity in contemporary society and its impact on youth. While no serious scholarly research has been conducted on the play so far, several critics have reviewed That Face in light of Oedipus complex. While the mother-son relationship is central to the plot and it is possible to see their bond as incestuous, too much focus on the sexual aspect of the play led the critics to overlook it’s ritual dimension. Instead of limiting the analysis to the theme of incest, the essay compares the play with Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex to examine the young protagonist’s abjection and self-sacrifice in ritual terms. This comparative analysis begins by challenging the two major traditional interpretations of the Attic tragedy based on Aristotle’s Poetics and Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretations of Dreams, which still influence the scholarly and popular understanding of the Oedipal myth. A close textual analysis reveals that the fall of Henry, the 18-year-old boy taking care of his mother suffering from alcoholism and a mental disorder by himself, does not derive from his hamartia, often translated as ‘error of judgment’ or ‘moral flaw,’ or incestuous desire for her. Rather, his tragic fate is caused by his irresponsible parents and the family’s poor ritual condition; he is not an immoral hero seeking to take the bed of his father but an innocent scapegoat that sacrifices his life and dreams to care for his mother. Without any proper rite of passage that should transition him into adulthood, the critical period of his late-teen life becomes his rite of sacrifice.

Desire, Affect, and Becoming: A Deleuzian Reading of A Streetcar Named Desire

Vol.65 No.1

The paper attempts a revisionary analysis of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire by focusing on the positive aspect of desire in light of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s postmodern philosophy of affect and becoming. While the critical interpretation of the play has tended to revolve around Blanche and Stanley’s conflict in terms of binary oppositions, their similarities—sexual and alcoholic indulgence, for instance—and the complexity of their characters challenge such a schematic reading. Inconsistent and often similar to each other, the characters of Streetcar are non-hierarchical and anti-essentialist entities—what Deleuze and Guattari call ‘desiring machines’—whose differences are only a matter of degree or intensity. Driven by desire, they affect and are affected by each other while making new connections and reconstituting old ones as they become something else. Rather than dramatizing a clash between different individual beings and the destructive consequences of desire, Streetcar is a play of becoming that attests to the productive and revolutionary potential of desire. Blanche’s relations with the other characters ultimately lead to the deterritorialization of the French Quarter and destabilize old ties that kept them dependent on or even subject to others. In this respect, the play celebrates body’s infinite potential to affect and be affected and produce real consequence as a play of anti-fascism. The play’s politics of becoming, evinced by Williams’ nuanced portrayal of the characters, challenges us to imagine new possibilities of identity and relationship in postmodernity.

Vol.12 No.3

In this paper, I discuss the ecopolitical and dramaturgical significance of Ha: Breath of Life, a popular show performed daily at The Polynesian Cultural Center in Oahu, Hawai’i, focusing on the show’s central motif of ‘journey.’ Featuring traditional Polynesian music and dances, the play represents a family’s migration in the Pacific region caused by a volcanic eruption. During their sojourns in the six islands of Tonga, Hawai’i, Aoteora, Samoa, Tahiti, and Fiji, the family enjoys the hospitality of local communities and learns about their cultural traditions. From an ecocritical point of view, the repeated sequence of the family’s migration and peaceful integration into a foreign culture showcases a sound engagement with the environment. Rather than conquerors or masters of the new environment that they encounter, the family humbly tries to blend into the new environment and respectfully follows the existing custom of local community as temporary guests. In light of the colonization history of Hawai’i and the ecological crisis fundamentally caused bythe human belief in their superiority to other creatures on the planet, there is much to learn from this attitude of ‘temporary guest.’ In addition to its ecopolitical value, Ha: Breath of Life deserves particular attention due to its dramaturgical significance as an American drama. The show’s sensual and technique-oriented representation of Polynesian cultures and the central theme of ‘ohana’ (universal family) not only widen the spectrum of diversity but also challenge the dominant model of realist family drama in modern American theatre.
