Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of chronic hepatitis and hepatic fibrosis worldwide. Up to 85% of individuals infected with HCV develop chronic infection, which can progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The primary goal in the treatment of HCV infection is to reduce the mortality by preventing liver-related deaths associated with the development of hepatocellular carcinoma and decompensated cirrhosis. Pegylated interferons together with ribavirin are currently the standard of care for patients with chronic hepatitis. Here, I discuss the goals of treatment, indication and treatment of chronic hepatitis C. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2008;51: 368-371)

A conceptual system dynamics model is developed to represent the dynamic mechanism between the number of hepatitis B virus and the defense system of the body. The simulation results shows that the model behaves within the reasonable ranges. The developed conceptual model is a first attempt to quantify the dynamic mechanisms of the hepatitis B virus, where only feedback structures are considered without bio-organism data. The next step would be to incorporate the model with bio-organism theory and to carry out case studies to identify personal characteristics. Since the current model is a conceptual model where quantitative results are not based on the sound background, the usage is limited only within the qualitative basis. It could be a effective educational tool for the patients. It also shows what-to-do lists in order to be used for forecast purposes. * This study was funded by "the Korea Research Foundation Grant" (KRF-2004-042-E00147) in 2004.

Virtual Reality(VR) is a new technology which makes humans communicate with computer. It allows the user to see, hear, feel and interact in a three-dimensional virtual world created graphically. In this paper, we introduced VR into psychotherapy area and developed VR system for the exposure therapy of acrophobia. Acrophobia is an abnormal fear of heights. Medications or cognitive-behavior methods have been mainly used as a treatment. Lately the virtual reality technology has been applied to that kind of anxiety disorders. A virtual environment provides patient with stimuli which arouses phobia, and exposing to that environment makes him having ability to over come the fear. In this study, the elevator stimulator that composed with a position sensor, head mount display, and audio system, is suggested. To illustrate the physiological difference between a person who has a feel of phobia and without phobia, heart rate was measured during experiment. And also measured a person's HR after the virtual reality training. In this study, we demonstrated the subjective effectiveness of virtual reality psychotherapy through the clinical experiment.

N/A The purposes of this study were to assess the relationship between functional dyspepsia (FD) and the gastroptosis which was considered as one of the causes of FD by some physicians in Korea and to evaluate the possibility that gastroptosis was directly related to the relatively decreased abdominal fat content. Methods : 442 subjects taken upper gastrointestinal barium series (UGIS) for routine check-up were interviewed about symptoms of FD by physicians on the basis of Rome criteria. Various parameters of obesity were also collected from 366 subjects. Gastroptosis was diagnosed by radiologists when the gastric angle was located below the Jacobys line. Results : Gastroptosis was found in 23 (5.2%) of 442 subjects. Relationship between gastroptosis and FD was rejected statistically because 3 (5.8%) of 52 subjects with FD had gastroptosis but 20 (5.1%) of 390 subjects without FD also showed gastroptosis. Various parameters of obesity such as body mass index (20.6±2.6, 23.8±2.8), % body fat (23.4±6.1%, 28.2±6.6%), % ideal body weight (97.9±12.6%, 112.6±14.0%), waist to hip ratio (0.855±0.096, 0.900±0.070) and weight (53.5±8.2 kg, 62.5±9.6 kg) in subjects with and without FD showed that the gastroptosis was more frequent in subjects with low values in parameters of obesity. But on multivariate analysis, only body mass index was the independent factor related to gastroptosis. Conclusion : Gastroptosis is not a cause of FD but is thought to be a constitutional problem related to low values in parameters of obesity. (Korean J Med 57:298-303, 1999)
