Antidiabetic activity of several herbal drugs, which are used as antidiabetics in folkmedicine, was evaluated. Among tested herbal drugs, extract of Astragali Radix significantly lowered blood glucose level in streptozotocin-induced diabetic model rat.

The dissociation constant of erythrosine in the mixed solvent systems of water-alcohols and water-acetone at various pH and in concentration media were determined by spectrophotometric method. Methanol, ethanol, and acetone were employed as solvents and studied the changes of pK values of erythrosine according to the kind and change of concentration of organic solvent which is mixed into water solution. The effect of organic solvent on pK is negligible at 40% while in the case of above 40% mixing, it is not negligible.

HPLC/fluorescence detection method for the analysis of pancuronium bromide in biological fluids was developed. The method depends on the formation of insoluble red complex between pancuronium bromide and rose bengal in aqueous layer. This complex is quantitatively extracted from aqueous layer into chloroform layer. The complex is stable for 1 day in chloroform layer at room temperature. It was possible to analyze pancuronium bromide in the range of 0.05-0.5 mcg/ml without the effect of co-prescribed drugs.

Systematic study on the extraction of ion pair by the use of picric acid (PCA) as an ion pair forming reagent to the aliphatic amines has not be done by spectrophotometric method. The extraction of ion pair by the use of PCA and 23 kinds of the aliphatic amines was examined. The procedure is as follows; Elving''s buffer solution (pH 1.3-10, ionic strength 0.5) each amine solution, and PCA solution were taken into a test tube. The mixture was shaken mechanically with chlorform. The organic phase was filtered through a filter paper to remove water droplets. The absorbance was examined at lambdamax against a reagent blank. Primary and secondary whose carbon number were more than 7 or 6, respectively, are extractable as ion pairs with PCA, while tertiary amines and quaternary ammonium salts are also extractable without the correlation of carbon number. It was considered that the ion pair extraction of primary and secondary amines was affected by the number of carbon of amines, but its extraction of tertiary amines or quaternary ammonium salts was affected by kind of aliphatic amines rather than pKa values or carbon number of amines.

The interaction between azo dyes and cationic surfactant was studied by absorption spectroscopy and fluorescent Rayleigh scattering. In order to presume the structure of formed micelle, methyl orange and ethyl orange as azo dyes and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as cationic surfactant were used. Infomations about interaction parameter including absorption maxima, optimal conditions, and intensity of fluorescent Rayleigh scattering were obtained. When azo dyes and CTAB are formed 1 : 1 complex, it showed the strongest intensity of fluorescent Rayleigh scattering. On going from mixed micelle to homomicell, It suggests successively several intermediate steps of complex structure which can be distinguished clearly from one another.

We examined MeOH extracts of the marine plants from Korea for their inhibitory activities on rat lens aldose reductase in vitro. Among the MeOH extracts tested, the extracts of Enteromorpha prolifera, Ecklonia cava, Pelvetia siliquosa and Salicornia herbacea exhibited a rat lens aldose reductase inhibition (IC$_{50}$: 3.04, 8.84, 11.42 and 4.99 $\mu$g-ml$^{-1}$, respectively) in vitro.

Binding parameters of some edible dyes with bovine serum albumin were determined at pH 7.4 buffer solution. The edible dyes used were fast green, brilliant blue FCF, indigo carmine and allura red AC, and the final concentrations of each dyes were 3~9X10-6M, 6X10-6M, 3X10-5M and 3X10-5M, respectively. The final concentrations of bovine serum albumin were 1~7X10-5M. The values of binding free energy between edible dye and protein were ranged from -6,024 to -6,800cal/mole.

The changes in discharge current, emission and/or oscillation frequency of the electric oscillation of a glow discharge are the potential sensitive measure of the concentration of an impurity in the argon plasma supporting gas. A single jet enhanced glow discharge has been interfaced with the gas chromatograph via 1/8" O.D. tube with a heating pad to study the changes in discharge current. To investigate the optimum operating conditions of the glow discharge system as detector for gas chromatography, pressure, gas flow rate, discharge current, distance between the anode and the cathode have been studied.

To investigate the effect of Artemisia apiacea Hance on the hair growth of black mouse (C57BL/6), this study was carried out. We obtained chloroform fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, butanol fraction from ethanol extract. When these fractions were administered to the black mouse by the method of skin paste, chloroform extract increased remarkably the hair growth of black mouse. thus Chloroform fraction was devided into 5 fractions from 20:1 to 1:1 with chloroform:methanol. the detail fractions of chloroform fraction were administered to the black mouse. We obtained the result that fraction I, II, III, IV are superior to minoxidil of positive control. Most of all fraction II have an dramatical effect on hair growth of black mouse.
