Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have attracted a great deal of attention due to their unique properties. However, due to interstrand van der Waals forces, their poor dispersity in aqueous or organic solvents has limited their practical applications. Chemical modification of their surfaces has been investigated in order to achieve good dispersity of MWCNTs in general and specifically regarding organic solvents. Because organic solvents are more suitable than water for processing various polymers, it is necessary for MWCNTs to be dispersed in organic solvents to allow the synthesis of polymer nanocomposites. To uniformly disperse MWCNTs in common organic solvents without the use of surfactants, acid treatment was carried out to introduce carboxyl groups, followed by alkylation with an alkyl halide to form alkylated MWCNTs. In this study, the effective dispersity of alkylated MWCNTs in acetone, toluene, and chloroform was observed by transmission electron microscopy. The dispersive stability of the MWCNTs over a period of 10 days was also investigated by using a Turbiscan optical analyzer. Antibiotic resistance has emerged as a global threat to modern healthcare systems and has nullified many commonly used antibiotics. β-Lactam antibiotics are among the most successful and occupy approximately two-thirds of the prescription antibiotic market. They inhibit the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer in the bacterial cell wall by mimicking the D-Ala-D-Ala in the pentapeptide crosslinking neighboring glycan chains. To date, various β-lactam antibiotics have been developed to increase the spectrum of activity and evade drug resistance. This review emphasizes the three-dimensional structural characteristics of β-lactam antibiotics regarding the overall scaffold, working mechanism, chemical diversity, and hydrolysis mechanism by β-lactamases. The structural insight into various β-lactams will provide an in-depth understanding of the antibacterial efficacy and susceptibility to drug resistance in multidrug-resistant bacteria and help to develop better β-lactam antibiotics and inhibitors.
난백 알레르기 환자에서 발생한 식품유발 급성 췌장염 1예

Acute pancreatitis (AP) rarely occurs in association with food allergy (FA), and the mechanism is not clearly explored. We herein report a rare case of egg protein-induced AP. A 5-year-old girl was brought to the hospital because of tongue pruritus and an increased level of egg white-specific immunoglobulin E. During an oral food challenge, she developed hives, abdominal pain and vomiting after ingestion of a cumulative of 610 mg of boiled egg white (70 mg of protein). After management with intramuscular injection of epinephrine and orally administered prednisolone and levocetirizine, her skin symptoms improved. The next day, blood tests showed elevated levels of amylase and lipase, and computed tomography revealed a swollen pancreas with a low-attenuated necrotic portion. She was diagnosed with AP and treated with food restriction, intravenous methylprednisolone and gabexate mesilate. The serum levels of amylase and lipase were reduced to normal levels on day 5 and her symptoms completely resolved on day 10. A suspicion of food-induced AP is required for correct diagnosis and proper management in children with FA when they manifest severe abdominal pain. (Allergy Asthma Respir Dis 2022;10:123-126)

The inherent properties of nanosized silica (sil), such as high biocompatibility, chemical and colloidal stability, and easy surface modification, have provided silica materials with a tremendous potential in biomedical applications. In this study, the biocomposites consisting of poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and Sil fabricated by a melt-plotting/coating process can be applied as a potential scaffold for bone tissue regeneration. The pore size and strut diameter of the multi-layered biocomposites were fixed at approximately 300㎛ and 300㎛, respectively, and the morphology, hydrophilic properties, water-absorption, and mechanical strength of various compositions (1.8, 4.8, 9.4wt% of sil) in the composites were evaluated. Through the water-contact angle and water-absorption, the bio-composites displayed dramatically increased hydrophilic properties, and highly roughened surface compared to the pure PCL scaffold. The in vitro biocompatibilities (cell proliferation and mineralization) of the bio-composites wereexamined using pre-osteoblasts (MC3T3E1). Based on scanning electron microscope images, the cells were more easily adhered and grown on the surface of the bio-composites, showing enhanced mineral deposition compared to the pure PCL scaffold after 14 days of cell culture. These results were because the coated sil component in the bio-composites could induce the osteogensis of the composites. Based on the physical and biological activities, we believe that the biocomposite will be a potential biomaterial for enhancing bone tissue regeneration.
구글 글래스의 TV 서비스 UX 시나리오 개발에 관한 연구

지난 2012년 공개된 구글의 구글 글래스(Google Glass)는 안경 형태의 웨어러블 컴퓨터(Wearable Computer) 를 통해 지금까지 경험할 수 없었던 새로운 ICT 디바이스의 시나리오를 보여주었다. 행동에 구애 받지 않고 어디서든 항상 디스플레이를 볼 수 있다는 구글 글래스의 장점은 TV 서비스 산업에 있어서 새로운 서비스 영역의 기회가 될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 향후 출시될 구글 글래스를 통하여 차세대 TV 서비스 등장 시 발생할 수 있는 UX에 대하여 연구하였다. 이러한 구글 글래스의 TV 서비스 이용에 대한 UX를 본 논문에서는 ‘구글 글래스 TV UX’라 정의하였다. 구글 글래스의 TV서비스 이용 시 어떠한 사용자 경험을 제공할 수 있는지 디바이스, 서비스, 콘텐츠 측면으로 분석하였고, 각 항목에 따른 UX 요소를 도출하였다. 도출된 UX 요소를 바탕으로 구글 글래스의 TV UX에 대한 시나리오를 제시하였다. Last October 2012 using the Wearable Computer in the form of glasses, Google Glass of Google showed scenarios of a new ICT devices that could not be experienced until now. Google glass has an advantage that the display is always visible at every place undeterred by action of google glass, and that can be the opportunity of new service area in TV service. In this paper, I study UX which can be occurred in accordance with the appearance of next generation TV service through a future release Google glass. Such usage of TV service by google glass is defined as "Google Glass TV UX" in this paper. I analyzed what kind of user experience can be provided when using the TV service in Google glass, in the aspects of device, service, and contents, and draw UX elements according to each segment. Based on those elements, I suggest a scenario of "Google Glass TV UX."

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), is one of the most important pest species devastating many horticultural and ornamental crops and fruit trees. In the present study, a field strain was collected in January 2001 and has been selected for sixteen years with acequinocyl. The resistance ratio calculated from the LC50 of eggs and adults was 191- and 4,237-fold, respectively. The laboratory-selected acequinocyl resistance (LSAR16) strain was screened with 11 acaricides for cross-resistance. The detoxifying enzyme activities and quantitative real-time PCR analysis were performed in the LSAR16 strain. Crossing experiments revealed that LSAR16 strain was inherited maternally, incompletely dominant and monogenic. Most importantly, we identified two new point-mutations at mitochondrial cytb from acequinocyl resistant T. urticae.
A Case of Visceral T Cell Lymphoma with Prominent Histiocyte Infiltration in a Dog

A 13-year-old intact male English Springer Spaniel presented with anorexia. Physical examination revealed a palpable abdominal mass without peripheral lymphadenopathy. Ultrasonography revealed hepatosplenomegaly and a markedly enlarged hepatic lymph node. Fine-needle aspiration of the splenic and nodal lesions revealed atypical round cells admixed with numerous histiocytes. The dog was euthanized owing to deteriorating condition despite a month of chemotherapy with lomustine. Histopathology revealed obliteration of the normal architecture of the liver, spleen, kidney, and hepatic and mesenteric lymph nodes by CD3+ neoplastic lymphocytes, accompanied by extensive F4/80+ histiocytic infiltration. This report describes a rare presentation of T-cell lymphoma with prominent histiocytic infiltration that may initially be misdiagnosed as histiocytic neoplasia in a dog.

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) is a group of inherited skin diseases characterized by intraepidermal blistering upon mild trauma. They are classified into three major types based on the severity and distribution of blisters, age of onset, and histological findings. These three major types are caused by KRT5 and KRT14 gene mutations. EBS Dowling-Meara (DM) is one of the most severe subtypes which mostly affects neonates. Electron microscopy is a primary diagnostic tool for EBS; however, mutation analysis has recently become more important for its diagnosis, prognosis, genetic counselling, and prenatal diagnosis. Several studies have reported that almost all mutations in EBS-DM patients are found in the highly conserved rod domains of the KRT5 and KRT14 genes and have also demonstrated a genotype-phenotype correlation. Here, we report an EBS-DM case diagnosed by mutation analysis in a newborn and a missense mutation not identified in humans previously.
