This paper presents a back-end system of hypermedia authoring system for courseware development. For the design, repersentative hypertext reference models, the Dexter model and the HAM(Hypertext Abstract Machine) which belongs to Campbell & Goodman model were analyzed. Based on those models, data objects, attributes, and operations of back-end system were designed and implemented. Because the application area of this system is on computer based education, the path mechanism is enforced for the various educational strategies. In order to reduce the user disorientation and cognitive overheads in navigating hypernetwork, filtering, backtracking and history mechanism were implemented.

The Master Gardener(MG) program is one of representative outreach program of cooperative extension at land grant Universities in U.S.A. The purpose of MG programs are primarily focused on educating community and people who want to join gardening project. MGs are valuable resources as volunteer-educators teaching environmental horticulture, increasing life quality through horticulture, community landscaping, school gardening, nutrition problems and horticultural therapy for the common-wealth or benefit of their community. MG educational programs and volunteer internships are needed to get and maintain MG title and they follow the policies and philosophies of cooperative extension. MG programs present lots of benefits by enlarge boundaries of horticulture and offer the practical educational services. To extend and activate further the value of horticulture, the MG programs should be introduced in Korea soon. MGs are regarded as new managers or primary leaders for educating horticulture, landscaping for community because of their knowledge and eagerness to help the people's advancement.

Two polymorphic loci, so- called FS106 and FS185, have been isolated from the human genome, using a multilocus probe pV47-2, which is extensively used in Korea for forensic investigation such as resolving paternity disputes. Among the several plaques selected from λ Fix-II genomic libraries, fourteen clones have been characterized. Restriction maps of 14 clones were constructed to define the flanking as well as repeat parts. The repeat-free flanking DNA fragments were tested for single locus specific polymorphism, and repeat containing DNA fragments were sequenced for the design of PCR primers. None of the repeat-free flanking DNA fragments was not shown any polymorphisms by RFLP analysis. The (GGT)??-rich sequences in most of repeat containing DNA fragments were identified by sequencing analysis. Most of repetitive sequences consists of major units of (GGT)??, but a regular repetition pattern can not be found in all clones. Two sets of primers designed from flanking sequences of repeat containing DNA fragments were shown length polymorphisms by PCR analysis, when tested in 50 unrelated individuals. Three and four alleles were detected at FS106 and 0.58 for FS185. In addition, two loci, FS106 and FS185, have been mapped on chromosome 5 and 3, respectively, by somatic cell hybrid analysis.

<B>BACKGROUND.</B><P>The purpose of the current study was to investigate the role of amifostine and epoetin-α in reducing severe toxicities during concurrent chemo-hyperfractionated radiotherapy (CCRT) for limited disease small cell lung cancer (LD-SCLC).</P><B>METHODS.</B><P>Seventy-six patients with LD-SCLC were enrolled. The treatment schedule was consisted of two 28-day cycles of cisplatin at a dose of 30 mg/m2 (Days 1 and 8) and irinotecan at a dose of 60 mg/m2 (Days 1, 8, and 15) followed by two 21-day cycles of cisplatin at a dose of 60 mg/m2 (Day 1) and etoposide at a dose of 100 mg/m2 (Days 1-3) with concurrent twice-daily thoracic radiotherapy for a total of 45 grays. Patients were randomly assigned at registration to either amifostine at a dose of 500 mg or epoetin-α at a dose of 10,000 IU subcutaneously 3 times weekly (n = 36 patients and 40 patients, respectively). Fifteen of 36 patients assigned to the amifostine arm did not receive amifostine because of a lack of supply.</P><B>RESULTS.</B><P>Amifostine treatment was associated with higher febrile neutropenia (P = .003) and grade 2 or 3 nausea (according to the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria [version 3.0]) (P = .03). It also demonstrated a trend toward higher grade 4 leukopenia (P = .05). Grade 3 esophagitis was reported in 30% of patients treated with amifostine and 9% of patients treated with epoetin-α (P = .059). Epoetin-α treatment was associated with less grade 2 or 3 anemia (P = .031) and lower decreases in hemoglobin level during CCRT (P = .016). The median survival times for both treatment arms were comparable (22.6 months in the amifostine arm vs 25.6 months in the epoetin-α arm; P = .447).</P><B>CONCLUSIONS.</B><P>Although amifostine administered 3 times weekly during CCRT did not significantly reduce severe toxicities, epoetin-α was effective in preventing severe anemia during CCRT in patients with LD-SCLC. Other radioprotective strategies to minimize severe toxicities should be investigated Cancer 2008. © 2008 American Cancer Society.</P>

Hemodialysis (HD) patients continually exposed to heparin are at risk of developing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). However, HIT is very rare in chronic HD patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The authors report the case of a chronic HD patient with ESRD who developed HIT complicated by recurrent thrombocytopenia and significant bleeding episodes. A 67-year-old man with diabetic ESRD on chronic HD suddenly developed recurrent acute bleeding episodes and severe thrombocytopenia (platelet count <1.0×10(3)/uL) 2 months prior to presentation. These bleeding episodes and the thrombocytopenia always occurred 1 week after initiating HD with heparin, and improved within 1 week of discontinuing heparin. HIT was confirmed by ELISA for anti-heparin/platelet factor 4 antibody. HD was conducted successfully and thrombocytopenia did not occur after switching argatroban for heparin. This case report suggests that clinicians must consider HIT in the differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia during maintenance HD.

<P>Circulating cell-free microRNAs (miRNAs) are potential biomarkers of cancer. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is widely used in miRNA expression studies. The aim of this study was to identify suitable reference genes for RT-qPCR analyses of miRNA expression levels in pleural effusion. The expression levels of candidate reference miRNAs were investigated in 10 benign pleural effusion (BPE) and 10 lung adenocarcinoma-associated malignant pleural effusion (LA-MPE) samples using miRNA microarrays. The expression levels of candidate reference miRNAs, together with those of U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA), RNU6B, RNU44 and RNU48 small RNAs, in 46 BPE and 45 LA-MPE samples were validated by RT-qPCR, and were analyzed using the NormFinder and BestKeeper algorithms. The impact of different normalization approaches on the detection of differential expression levels of miR-198 in BPE and LA-MPE samples was also assessed. As determined by the miRNA microarray data, five candidate reference miRNAs were identified. Following RT-qPCR validation, U6 snRNA, miR-192, miR-20a, miR-221, miR-222 and miR-16 were evaluated using the NormFinder and BestKeeper software programs. U6 snRNA and miR-192 were identified as single reference genes and the combination of these genes was preferred for the relative quantification of miRNA expression levels in pleural effusion. Normalization of miR-98 expression levels to those of U6 snRNA, miR-192 or a combination of these genes enabled the detection of a significant difference between BPE and LA-MPE samples. Therefore, U6 snRNA and miR-192 are recommended as reference genes for the relative quantification of miRNA expression levels in pleural effusion.</P>
