        Unmet Needs for Mental Health Care and Its Implication for Health Education in Canada

        Objectives: Individuals' self-reported unmet needs are an important indicator of heath care of their society. Using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) Cycle 1.2, we examine unmet needs for mental health care in Canada and discuss its implications to health education. Results: The most frequently reported reason for unmet needs was barriers to acceptability issues, which stem primarily from lack of knowledge of mental health, negative attitudes towards mental disorder, and mistrust of mental health professionals. Unmet needs for mental health care appeared an especially serious issue among the young. Also, individuals who reported unmet needs tended to have some ill health behavior such as illicit drug use that could be their coping mechanism. On the other hand, emotional and informational support factors have shown an important mitigating effect on unmet needs. Conclusions: These findings of unmet needs pose a major challenge to health education. To effectively address unmet mental health care needs, it is recommended that the focus of relevant policies and programs should be on enhancing a multi-level mental health education strategy including efforts on individual, environmental and professional level education.

        초·중·고등학교 학생, 학부모, 일반교사의 보건교육 요구

        Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify needs of health education of the students, parents, general teachers, and health teacher of the elementary, middle, and high schools. Method : 279 schools of elementary, middle, and high school were sampled nonproportionally during the period from June 28 to July 26, 2004 . The data were collected by the questionnaire from 1,888 students, 1,876 parents, 1,695 general teachers, 279 health teachers. A frequency, % and χ2-test were used to analysis by SAS program. Result : 1. It showed that 98.1% of elementary school students, 92.3% of middle school students, 89.6% of high school students answered that they need health education. The most of students, parents, and general teachers had high interests in health education. 2. In the case of students, main causes of needs of health education was 'to prevent diseases or accidents''. But parents answered that it was 'to build up a healthier behavior'. General teachers answered that it was 'more effective systematic and continuous health education'. 3. Over 80% of students, parents, and general teachers about the question of who qualified person is to teach health education as a regular class responded that health teacher is available. Especially 93% of elementary school students answered like that. 4. The most of students, parents, and general teachers answered that health education in the classroom is favorable 1 to 2 hours per week. Conclusion : As results of the study , the majority of students, parents, general teachers agreed needs of health education. Therefore, on the basis of this study, systematic and continuous health education is necessary. Additionally the establishment of independent health subject is required certainly.

      • 일부 지역 보육교사의 구강건강관련 실천도 및 구강보건교육 인식도·필요도 조사

        Purpose. Infant oral health care forms the basis of lifelong health, and the role of child care teachers in contributing to the quality level in the formation of correct habits at this time throughout the infant's health care and education is very important. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the perceived oral health status of nursery teachers and the necessity of oral health education, and to emphasize that the oral health of teachers is closely related to the oral health of infants and young children. Methods. This study was conducted from May to June 2018 by surveying private nursery teachers in some parts of Gyeongsangbuk-do province by using the self-entry method. The research tools consisted of the general characteristics of subjects, subjective oral health status, oral health practice, oral health education awareness, and oral health education needs. We used shceffe as a post hoc test to compare the differences between groups after frequency analysis, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA analysis. The linear regression analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between perceived oral health status, oral health practice and awareness, and oral health education needs. The statistical level was .05. Results. According to the results of this study, the oral health related practice according to the demographic characteristics is at the final education level, and the oral health related awareness is age, marital status and oral health education needs. The results showed statistically significant differences in final educational attainment and cohabitation. Regarding the relationship between perceived oral health status, oral health related practice and awareness, and oral health education needs There were significant differences in oral health practice(β =.329) and oral health education needs (β =.158). Conclusion. Based on the above results, the child care facility can emphasize the importance of the role of the child care teacher in the oral health care of infants, and the basic data for the establishment of the child care management program in the future by reflecting the role of the teacher in the development of the child care management program of the child care facility.         지역사회통합건강증진사업에 따른 보건치과위생사의 직무역량 교육요구도

        Objectives: To determine the educational needs related to an integrated health and oral health project for community dental hygienists. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a survey was administered to 1,190 dental hygienists working in community health centers and 627 (about 53%) responded. The dependent variable was educational needs from oral health projects; the independent variables were region, job assignments, job position, and degree of self-development. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests, with PASW 20.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA), and the significance threshold was .05. Results: The educational needs of community dental hygienists were found to be high, at about 58.5 points out of 100. The highest educational needs were for oral health projects linked to public health projects. In this regard, participants reported a high need for “identification of issues and projects suited to the current state of the region,” “establishment of strategies for integration of health and oral health projects,” and “prioritization.” Conclusions: Professional education for community dental hygienists should be expanded to include integration of health and oral health. It should be based on the assessment of these professionals’ educational needs.

        노인의 구강보건지식, 행위, 교육 요구도에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this study was to examine elderly people`s oral health behaviors and education needs. The subjects in this study were 195 senior citizens who were users of senior cultural centers and senior welfare agencies in Seoul and Incheon. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSSWIN 19.0. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. Gender, academic credential and monthly mean income were identified as the general characteristics to impact on their oral health attitude. 2. The senior citizens who ever received oral health education had a better knowledge(p<0.05) and took a better attitude(p<0.01). 3. As for a time for toothbrushing, many brushed their teeth after breakfast(74.9%) and dinner(71.8%). Utilized Oral hygiene devices were interdental brushes(21.5%), dental floss(13.8%). As many as 62.5% felt they had a dry mouth, and the most prevalent way for them to cope with it was drinking water often(68.2%). 79.5% didn`t get their teeth cleaned on a regular scaling. 4. The rate of regular scaling was higher in the elderly groups that ever received oral health education and whose knowledge scores was above the average(p<0.05). 5. In relation to the necessity of oral health education, 87.2% felt the need for that, and as many as 79.0% intended to receive that education. Their favorite period of education was 6months(41.0%), and the greatest group hoped to receive that education for an hour(55.4%). The largest group wanted to learn about prevention of oral diseases, followed by toothbrushing, denture management, dry mouth. Given the findings of the study, senior welfare centers and senior cultural centers should offer oral health education programs as part of lifelong education to provide systematic and prolonged education for the elderly to improve their oral health care to promote their oral health.

        인천광역시 지역아동센터 교사의 구강보건교육 요구도 조사

        The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health behavior and awareness of teachers in community children`s centers, the state of oral health care among children in the centers and the opinions of the teachers on child oral health education in a bid to gather information required for the development of oral health education programs geared toward community children`s center teachers. The subjects in this study were 178 teachers who worked in 98 community children`s centers in the city of Incheon. After a survey was conducted from April 28 to June 4, 2010, the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: The 57.3% of the teachers investigated provided toothbrushing guidance from time to time or couldn`t do it at all. As for the reason why toothbrushing guidance was scarcely conducted, the largest group cited shortage of sinks(27.5%) as the reason, and the second biggest group replied they couldn`t afford to pay attention to that due to heavy workload(20.6%). The third greatest group was pressed for time(16.7%). The teachers got a mean of 3.27 in oral health behavior, and 87.7% were concerned about children`s oral health. The group of teachers who ever received oral health education was significantly better at oral health behavior and showed significant more interest in oral health(p<0.01). The 97.2% of the respondents considered oral health important. Concerning the reason, they replied it was crucial for systemic health (74.2%). The 89.4% of the teachers viewed child oral health education as necessary, and 86.5% had an intention to provide oral health education for children. They hoped to receive education on the oral health control act(4.52) and the prevention of dental caries(4.40). The above-mentioned findings confirmed that in order to step up the oral health promotion of child users of local children`s centers, it`s necessary to provide secondhand education for them through their teachers who have a great impact on them. Therefore the development of oral health education programs that cater to local children`s center teachers is required.

        일부 보건과 비보건계열 학생의 구강보건교육 경험 및 필요성 인지도 비교

        본 연구는 일부지역 보건계열과 비보건계열 학생들의 구강관리행태 및 구강보건교육 경험 및 필요도에 대해 파악하여 대학생들의 구강건강증진을 위한 구강보건교육 프로그램 개발을 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 시행되었다. 2016년 5월부터 22일부터 25일까지 경남, 부산지역에 위치한 대학교의 보건계열 234명과 비보건계열 201명을 대상으로 자기기입식 설문을 하였다. 450부 중 응답이 불성실하거나, 누락된 일부를 제외한 435명의 자료를 최종 분석에 이용하였다. 자료는 SPSS 21.0을 이용하여 평균과 표준편차, t-test, ANOVA, 다중회귀 분석을 실시하였다. 구강건강행위 특성에서 보건계열이 비보건계열 학생보다 높게 나타났고, 구강보건교육 경험 및 필요성에서도 보건계열이 비보건계열 학생보다 높게 나타났으며, 스케일링 만족도, 주기적 구강보건교육 필요성에서 학년, 비보건계열에서 통계적으로 유의하였으며, 보건계열에서는 성별, 스케일링 만족에서 통계적으로 유의하였다. 그러므로 대학생들의 구강건강 증진 및 구강관리행태 개선을 위해서는 지속적인 구강보건교육을 위한 프로그램 개발 및 장치가 마련되어져야 할 것으로 사료된다. The purpose of this study was to investigate oral health behavior and periodic oral health education needs, to provide basic data of oral health education program. The subjects of this study were 234 health-related college students and 201 health-unrelated students in the Busan and Gyeongnam area. The survey was conducted from 25 to 30 May, 2016. We utilized the data of 435, excluding 15 non-applicable data, for the data processing and final analysis. Data analysis was conducted with SPSS 20.0 for average standard deviation, t-test, One way ANOVA and multiple logistic regression analysis. This study statistical analysis of the collected data were analyzed by SPSS 21.0 for windows, SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL. USA. The oral health behaviors and oral health education need of health-related students were higher than health-unrelated students. The affecting factors on oral health education need of health-related students were gender, satisfaction of scaling. The affecting factors on oral health education need of health-unrelated students were gender, satisfaction of scaling and periodic oral health education need. To promote the oral health of college students, oral health education program should be provided.

        서울시 노인들의 대중매체 관심도 및 보건교육 요구도 조사연구

        This survey was carried out with random sampling from 7 koos in Seoul (seodaemoonkoo, Mapokoo, Kangdongkoo, Seongdongkoo, Koorokoo, Yongsankoo and Seongbookkoo) in order to evaluate the present health education needs of the aged and to find out the alternative plan for improvement. It used closed questionnaire. The number of the surveyed is 580. The brief results and suggestions of this study are as follows: 1. There is high level of health education needs of the aged in Seoul. 2. There is little activity of health education from the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. 3. They like lectures and group guidances best of all the ways of health education. 4. They like pavilions of the aged best of all the places of health education. 5. They like to receive health education once a month for about an hour. 6. They need the public relations and education of accident-preventive behaviors as well as the improvement of accident-prone environment and complementary policy measures, especially securing an actually ample budget. 7. Health education for the aged should take convenience and accessibility into account.

        일부 초등학교 교사의 구강보건교육 인식에 영향을 미치는 요인

        Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the influencing factors on awareness toward oral health education in elementary school teachers. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 250 elementary school teachers in Jeollado and Chungcheongdo from October 6 to November 28, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of the general characteristics of the subjects, oral health knowledge, oral health beliefs, and oral health education awareness measured by Likert 5 point scale. Cronbach alpha was 0.699 in the oral health knowledge and 0.957 in the oral health beliefs. Results: Those who were more interested in the oral health education had the awareness toward the necessity of oral health education. Those who had a longer career of education tended to have the strong beliefs in oral health education. Conclusions: The elementary school teachers are the most important persons in the lifelong oral health education facilitator to the students. It is very important to provide the continuing oral health education program development for the elementary school teachers.

        제조업 사업장 안전보건책임자의 교육역량강화 요구도와 관련된 조직환경적 특성

        연구목적 : 본 연구는 제조업 사업장 안전보건책임자의 개인 및 조직 특성과 산재예방을 위한 교육역량강화 요구도 간의 관련성을 분석하기 위하여 실시되었다. 연구방법 : 전국 138개 제조업사업장의 안전보건책임자 171명을 조사대상으로 하였다. 기업체산업안전협의회와 대한산업안전협회에 등록되어 있는 제조업 사업장 중 규모와 산재 발생 및 보건교육 실시 정도를 고려하여 사업장을 선정하고 사업장안전보건책임자 앞으로 자기기입식 우편설문조사지를 우편발송하였다. 조사지에는 개인적 특성, 조직환경적 특성, 교육역량강화를 위한 교육요구도 특성이 포함되었다. 89.2%가 남자였고 27.8% 사업장만이 대도시에 소재하고 있었다. 종업원 수 50인미만 사업장이 29.9%였으며 설문응답자의 과반수 이상이(61.3%) 안전관리자였다. 연구결과 : 조사대상 안전보건책임자의 교육 요구도는 조직의 구조적 측면보다는 인적, 사회적 환경 특성인 책임자의 안전보건관리 수준, 안전보건교육을 위한 사내 환경기반, 현재 안전보건책임자의 교육 역량, 산재예방을 위한 안전보건교육 효과에 대한 신념, 사내 안전보건관리를 위한 조직차원의 지지가 대상자의 교육 요구도와 유의미한 상관관계가 있었으며 특히 안전보건책임자가 갖추어야 할 교육 역량이 중등도 이상의 상관관계를 가지고 있었다(r= .53). 다중회귀분석에서 위의 안전보건책임자가 갖추어야 할 교육 역량, 안전보건교육 효과에 대한 신념, 안전보건관리를 위한 조직차원의 지지가 유의미한 영향 요인으로 드러났으며 이들 조직환경적 요인들의 대상자의 교육 요구도에 대한 분산설명력이 43.3%였다(F=4.54, p= .00). 결론 : 본 연구결과 기대되는 안전보건책임자의 역량 수준과 조직차원의 지지 등 조직내 인적, 사회적 환경 특성이 사내안전보건책임자의 교육요구도에 중요한 요인으로서 산재 예방과 관련된 사업장 조직차원의 인식과 문화의 중요성이 부각되었으며 이에 따라 관련된 이론적, 실제적 근거를 확보하는 방향으로 향후 연구가 활성화되어야 하겠다. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify personal and organizational factors associated with safety and health managers (SHM)’ health education needs in Korean manufacturing industry. Methods: A total of 171 SHM in 138 manufacturing companies participated in the self-administered mailing survey. The survey packet was delivered to the SHM in each company randomly selected from the mailing lists of the Korean Occupational Health Conference and each SHM finished and returned the survey. The questionnaire consisted of personal factors, organizational factors and SHM educational needs. All factors were surveyed with Likert type scale items. Most survey participants were men (89.2%) and the SHM employed in the companies in metropolitan areas were 27.8%. The companies of which employees were less than 50 were 29.9% and more than half of the participants were safety managers (61.3%). Results: Total educational needs in the SHM group were generally correlated with organizational safety and health management level. The expected competency for safety education had medium-high level correlation with educational needs of SHM (r= .53). And such organizational environment for safety education, current competency for safety education, perceived safety education efficacy, and organizational support for safety management were also positively correlated with the safety and health educational needs. In regression analysis, the personal, organizational, and organizational safety and health factors described 43.3% variance of the SHM educational needs (F=4.54, p= .00). The significant factors associated with SHM educational needs were expected organizational competency for safety education, perceived safety education efficacy and organizational support for safety management (p< .05). Conclusion: From the statistical significances of expected organizational efficacy and support for safety management on SHM educational needs, occupational safety and health research should be actively conducted to provide both theoretical and practical evidences about organizational climates and culture related to injury prevention.
