        Scheduling with Heterogeneous QoS Provisioning for Indoor Visible-light Communication

        Visible-light communication (VLC) combined with advanced illumination can be expected to become an integral part of next-generation communication networks. One of the major concerns in VLC implementation is developing resource-allocation schemes in a multi-user scenario. However, the scheduling for heterogeneous quality of service (QoS) traffic has not been studied so far, for the indoor VLC downlink system. In this paper, we creatively introduce effective-bandwidth and effective-capacity theory into the multi-user scheduling (MUS) problem, to guarantee the user’s statistical delay QoS. We also take account of the aggregate interference (AI) in the indoor VLC downlink system, and analyze its impact on the user-centric MUS problem for the first time. Simulations show that the AI has a nonnegligible influence on the scheduling result, and that the proposed scheduling scheme could guarantee the user’s QoS requirement under the premise of ensuring sum capacity.

        Investigation on the Temperature Characteristics of Water Inner-Cooled Stator Coil of HTS Motor

        This study investigates the temperature characteristics of water inner-cooled stator coil based on Litz wire for high temperature superconducting (HTS) motor. Rich experience in transposed Litz bundle windings is accumulated by manufacturing scaled-down water inner-cooled coil prototypes for high-capacity HTS motors. On this basis, the temperature rise test and calculation simulation are carried out. The maximum relative error between the two results is only 5.13%, which verified the rationality of the numerical temperature field calculation method. Subsequently, the effects of pipe blockage and epoxy thermal conductivity changes on the coil temperature are further explored. Thus, a relatively complete method for evaluating the temperature characteristics of water inner-cooled windings is formed, which can greatly help guide the design and manufacture of future high-capacity HTS motors.

        Cooperative Synchronization and Channel Estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks

        A critical issue in applications involving networks of wireless sensors is their ability to synchronize, and mitigate the fading propagation channel effects. Especially when distributed 'slave' sensors (nodes) reach-back to communicate with the 'master' sensor (gateway), low power cooperative schemes are well motivated. Viewing each node as an antenna element in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) multi-antenna system, we design pilot patterns to estimate the multiple carrier frequency offsets (CFO), and the multiple channels corresponding to each node-gateway link. Our novel pilot scheme consists of non-zero pilot symbols along with zeros, which separate nodes in a time division multiple access (TDMA) fashion, and lead to low complexity schemes because CFO and channel estimators per node are decoupled. The resulting training algorithm is not only suitable for wireless sensor networks, but also for synchronization and channel estimation of single- and multi-carrier MIMO systems. We investigate the performance of our estimators analytically, and with simulations.

        Effects of heat stress on body temperature, milk production, and reproduction in dairy cows: a novel idea for monitoring and evaluation of heat stress — A review

        Heat stress exerts a substantial effect on dairy production. The temperature and humidity index (THI) is widely used to assess heat stress in dairy operations. Herein, we review the effects of high temperature and humidity on body temperature, feed intake, milk production, follicle development, estrous behavior, and pregnancy in dairy cows. Analyses of the effects of THI on dairy production have shown that body temperature is an important physiological parameter in the evaluation of the health state of dairy cows. Although THI is an important environmental index and can help to infer the degree of heat stress, it does not reflect the physiological changes experienced by dairy cows undergoing heat stress. However, the simultaneous measurement of THI and physiological indexes (e.g., body temperature) would be very useful for improving dairy production. The successful development of automatic detection techniques makes it possible to combine THI with other physiological indexes (i.e., body temperature and activity), which could help us to comprehensively evaluate heat stress in dairy cows and provide important technical support to effectively prevent heat stress.

        FLOURY ENDOSPERM8, encoding the UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase 1, affects the synthesis and structure of starch in rice endosperm

        Cereal opaque-kernel mutants are ideal geneticmaterials for studying the mechanism of starch biosynthesisand amyloplast development. Here we isolated and identifiedtwo allelic floury endosperm 8 (flo8) mutants of rice, namedflo8-1 and flo8-2. In the flo8 mutant, the starch content wasdecreased and the normal physicochemical features ofstarch were altered. Map-based cloning and subsequentDNA sequencing analysis revealed a single nucleotidesubstitution and an 8-bp insertion occurred in UDP-glucosepyrophosphorylase 1 (Ugp1) gene in flo8-1 and flo8-2,respectively. Complementation of the flo8-1 mutant restorednormal seed appearance by expressing full length codingsequence of Ugp1. RT-qPCR analysis revealed that Ugp1was ubiquitously expressed. Mutation caused the decreasedUGPase activity and affected the expression of most of genesassociated with starch biosynthesis. Meanwhile, western blotand enzyme activity analyses showed the comparability ofprotein levels and enzyme activity of most tested starchbiosynthesis related genes. Our results demonstrate thatUgp1 plays an important role for starch biosynthesis in riceendosperm.

        Hierarchical polyurethane/RGO/BiOI fiber composite as flexible, selfsupporting and recyclable photocatalysts for RhB degradation under visible light

        Increasing organic pollutants have seriously affected the ecological environment and human health, photocatalytictechnology is considered as one of the most effective and environmentally friendly treatmentmethods. In this work, a novel hierarchical polyurethane (PU)/reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/bismuthoxyiodide (BiOI) composite fiber photocatalyst is constructed via an energy-saving route consisted ofultrasonic-assisted and co-precipitation method by utilizing PU nanofibers as substrate. The RGO are firstevenly wrapped in the PU nanofiber surface and BiOI nanosheets are then uniformly grown on the PU/RGO surface to form the hierarchical PU/RGO/BiOI composite fibers with a core–shell structure. The composition,morphology and electrochemical performance of the obtained PU/RGO/BiOI were characterizedby XRD, XPS, SEM, BET, I-t and EIS. Benefited from the high specific surface area of the PU nanofiber andthe excellent electron transfer ability of the RGO, a remarkable photocatalytic activity was achieved forthe PU/RGO/BiOI composite fibers and the degradation rate of RhB is 93.2% within 180 min. Notably, comparedto the traditional suspended nanoparticles, the PU/RGO/BiOI fibers exhibit excellent flexibility andself-supporting property, and can be easily separated and recovered from the contaminated water. Thus,the obtained PU/RGO/BiOI composite fibers with high photocatalytic activity and easily separable propertyare expected to possess great potential in water purification.

        Desktop-Stereolithography 3D Printing of a Decellularized Extracellular Matrix/Mesenchymal Stem Cell Exosome Bioink for Vaginal Reconstruction

        Background 3D-printing is widely used in regenerative medicine and is expected to achieve vaginal morphological restoration and true functional reconstruction. Mesenchymal stem cells-derived exosomes (MSCs-Exos) were applyed in the regeneration of various tissues. The current study aimed to explore the effctive of MSCs-Exos in vaginal reconstruction. Methods In this work, hydrogel was designed using decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) and gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and silk fibroin (SF). The biological scaffolds were constructed using desktop-stereolithography. The physicochemical properties of the hydrogels were evaluated; Some experiments have been conducted to evaluate exosomes’ effect of promotion vaginal reconstruction and to explore the mechanism in this process. Results It was observed that the sustained release property of exosomes in the hydrogel both in vitro and in vitro.The results revealed that 3D scaffold encapsulating exosomes expressed significant effects on the vascularization and musule regeneration of the regenerative vagina tissue. Also, MSCs-Exos strongly promoted vascularization in the vaginal reconstruction of rats, which may through the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Conclusion The use of exosome-hydrogel composites improved the epithelial regeneration of vaginal tissue, increased angiogenesis, and promoted smooth muscle tissue regeneration. 3D-printed, lumenal scaffold encapsulating exosomes might be used as a cell-free alternative treatment strategy for vaginal reconstruction.         Patterns and drivers of Vibrio isolates phylogenetic diversity in the Beibu Gulf, China

        Members of the genus Vibrio are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and can be found either in a culturable or a viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state. Despite widespread concerns as to how to define the occurrence and dynamics of Vibrio populations by culture-independent approaches, further physiological research and relevant biotechnological developments will require the isolation and cultivation of the microbes from various environments. The present work provides data and perspectives on our understanding of culturable Vibrio community structure and diversity in the Beibu Gulf. Finally, we isolated 1,037 strains of Vibrio from 45 samples and identified 18 different species. Vibrio alginolyticus, V. cyclitrophicus, V. tasmaniensis, V. brasiliensis, and V. splendidus were the dominant species that had regional distribution characteristics. The correlation between the quantitative distribution and community structure of culturable Vibrio and environmental factors varied with the Vibrio species and geographical locations. Among them, salinity, nitrogen, and phosphorus were the main factors affecting the diversity of culturable Vibrio. These results help to fill a knowledge gap on Vibrio diversity and provide data for predicting and controlling pathogenic Vibrio outbreaks in the Beibu Gulf.

        A displacement solution for circular openings in an elastic-brittle-plastic rock

        The localized shear and the slip lines are easily observed in elastic-brittle-plastic rock. After yielding, the strength of the brittle rock suddenly drops from the peak value to the residual value, and there are slip lines which divide the macro rock into numbers of elements. There are slippages of elements along the slip lines and the displacement field in the plastic region is discontinuous. With some restraints, the discontinuities can be described by the combination of two smooth functions, one is for the meaning of averaging the original function, and the other is for characterizing the breaks of the original function. The slip lines around the circular opening in the plastic region of an isotropic H-B rock which subjected to a hydrostatic in situ stress can be described by the logarithmic spirals. After failure, the deformation mechanism of the plastic region is mainly attributed to the slippage, and a slippage parameter is introduced. A new analytical solution is presented for the plane strain analysis of displacements around circular openings. The displacements obtained by using the new solution are found to be well coincide with the exact solutions from the published sources.

        Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy-Guided Bladder-Sparing Treatment for Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer: Results of a Pilot Phase II Study

        Purpose Reduced quality of life after cystectomy has made bladder preservation a popular research topic for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). Previous research has indicated significant tumor downstaging after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). However, maximal transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) was performed before NAC to define the pathology, impacting the real evaluation of NAC. This research aimed to assess real NAC efficacy without interference from TURBT and apply combined modality therapies guided by NAC efficacy. Materials and Methods Patients with cT2-4aN0M0 MIBC were confirmed by cystoscopic biopsy and imaging. NAC efficacy was assessed by imaging, urine cytology, and cystoscopy with multidisciplinary team discussion. Definite responders (≤ T1) underwent TURBT plus concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Incomplete responders underwent radical cystectomy or partial cystectomy if feasible. The primary endpoint was the bladder preservation rate. Results Fifty-nine patients were enrolled, and the median age was 63 years. Patients with cT3-4 accounted for 75%. The median number of NAC cycles was three. Definite responders were 52.5%. The complete response (CR) was 10.2%, and 59.3% of patients received bladder-sparing treatments. With a median follow-up of 44.6 months, the 3-year overall survival (OS) was 72.8%. Three-year OS and relapse-free survival were 88.4% and 60.0% in the bladder-sparing group but only 74.3% and 37.5% in the cystectomy group. The evaluations of preserved bladder function were satisfactory. Conclusion After stratifying MIBC patients by NAC efficacy, definite responders achieved a satisfactory bladder-sparing rate, prognosis, and bladder function. The CR rate reflected the real NAC efficacy for MIBC. This therapy is worth verifying through multicenter research.
