The survey conducted by individual interviews. Subjects were adults aged 60 and over, recruited from three elderly schools in N city in Kyung-gi province(n=95). In the survey, subjects were interviewed for general characteristics, interesting nutrition topics, preferred methods of nutrition service. Subjects were interested in topics such as ‘anything about nutrition’(41%), ‘healthy eating’(31%), ‘diet with taking medicine’(17%), and ‘nutrition counseling’(12%). As methods of nutrition service, Subjects wanted primarily to use lectures in school(27%). Nutrition education program(29%), booklets(25%) were other commonly cited methods. These results provide baseline information for developing nutrition service and methods for elderly.
Ophthalmologic Findings of Boucher-Neuhauser Syndrome
( Sun Im Yu ),( Jung Lim Kim ),( Sul Gee Lee ),( Hyun Woong Kim ),( Sang Jin Kim ) 대한안과학회 2008 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.22 No.4
To report a case of Boucher-Neuhauser syndrome, which is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the triad of spinocerebellar ataxia, chorioretinal dystrophy, and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. An 18-year-old man was seen for visual problems, which had been diagnosed as retinitis pigmentosa at the age of 12 years. His puberty was delayed. At 16 years of age, the patient experienced progressive deterioration of his balance and gait disturbance. Then he was referred to our clinic because Boucher-Neuhauser syndrome was suspected. He had no specific family history; his visual acuity was 0.04 in both eyes. We observed broad retinal pigment epithelium atrophy and degeneration in both fundi. Both fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography showed choriocapillaris atrophy in the posterior pole area and midperiphery. Macular optical coherence tomography showed thinning of the neurosensory retina. An electroretinographic examination showed no photopic or scotopic responses. The Boucher-Neuhauser syndrome should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with retinitis pigment epithelium atrophy and degeneration. Korean J Ophthalmol 2008;22:263-267

Background: Biodegradable polymers have increasingly been recognized for various biological applications in recent years. Here we examined the immunostimulatory activities of the novel poly(aspartic acid) conjugated with L-lysine (PLA). Methods: PLA was synthesized by conjugating L-lysine to aspartic acid polymer. PLA-nanoliposomes (PLA-NLs) were prepared from PLA using a microfluidizer. The immunostimulatory activities of PLA-NLs were examined in mouse bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BM-DCs). Results: PLA-NLs increased the number of BM-DCs when added to cultures of GM-CSF-induced DC generation on day 4 after the initiation of cultures. Examination of the phenotypic properties showed that BM-DCs generated in the presence of PLA-NLs are more mature in terms of the expression of MHC class II molecules and major co-stimulatory molecules than BM-DCs generated in the absence of PLA-NLs. In addition, the BM-DCs exhibited enhanced capability to produce cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-12, TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$. Allogeneic mixed lymphocyte reactions also confirmed that the BMDCs were more stimulatory on allogeneic T cells. PLA- NL also induced further growth of immature BM-DCs that were harvested on day 8. Conclusion: These results show that PLA-NLs induce the generation and functional activities of BM-DCs, and suggest that PLA-NLs could be immunostimulating agents that target DCs.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A glucose sensor electrode was prepared with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) because of its effect on surface modification through oxyfluorination. The oxyfluorination of MWNTs was carried out with F2:O2 ratios of 7:3, 5:5 and 3:7, which are labeled F7O3-MWNT, F5O5-MWNT, and F3O7-MWNT, based on the oxyfluorination conditions. The hydrophilic functional groups were introduced effectively on the hydrophobic carbon surface. In addition, the amorphous area of the MWNTs was affected by oxyfluorination. The reactivity of the glucose sensor was affected by the oxyfluorination treatment and the existence of amorphous on MWNTs. The optimum O/F percentage was approximately 50%. Therefore, the oxyfluorination conditions are important with amorphous MWNTs. The sensitivity was improved based on the effects of improved interface affinity between the enzyme and the carbon electrode. In addition, the presence of an amorphous area on MWNTs seems to be beneficial for efficient glucose oxidase immobilization, which results in high-performance glucose sensing.</P>
Survey for evaluating perceptions of workers in nursing homes regarding swallowing disorders
( Sun-young Yim ),( Ree-aie Ju ),( Hyo-jin Son ),( Inn-im Park ),( Yu-ri Heo ),( Mee-kyoung Son ) 조선대학교 치의학연구원(구 조선대학교 구강생물학연구소) 2018 Oral Biology Research (Oral Biol Res) Vol.42 No.3
This research is intended to be base data for suggestions about the role of dentists and new treatment methods for patients with swallowing disorders as a rehabilitation for oral functions under long-term care insurance for the elderly by investigating and evaluating the perception of the aged with dysphagia by the workers in nursing facilities. We analyzed 436 questionnaire surveys conducted on nursing facilities affiliated to the Association of Gwang-ju Welfare for the Aged through email from August 7, 2017, to September 8, 2017. Many workers in nursing facilities were concerned with the swallowing disorders among the patients, and the treatments they would request from the nursing-home dentists were dental check-ups, oral hygiene management, and eating-swallowing guidance and consultation. Our findings show that reconsideration of the role of the dentists is demanded, along with the awareness of nursing facility workers on swallowing disorders and the need for relevant treatments. Also, we must secure the institutional basis where the cooperation of the nursing and medical teams can take place.
Baicalein Protects 6-OHDA-induced Neuronal Damage by Suppressing Oxidative Stress

The protective effects of baicalein, one of the flavonoids in Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, were evaluated against 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced neuronal damage in mice and cultured human neuroblastoma cells. Nigrostriatal damage was induced by stereotaxically injecting 6-OHDA into the right striatum. Baicalein was administered intraperitoneally 30 min before and 90 min after lesion induction. Animals received a further daily injection of baicalein for 3 consecutive days. Two weeks after 6-OHDA injection, contralateral rotational asymmetry was observed by apomorphine challenge in lesioned mice. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry revealed a significant loss of terminals in lesioned striatum and the reduction of the numbers of TH-positive cell in the ipsilateral substantia nigra (SN). In addition, the levels of dopamine (DA) and DA metabolites were reduced and lipid peroxidation was increased in lesioned striatum. However, baicalein treatment reduced apomorphine-induced rotational behavior in 6-OHDA-lesioned mice, and increased TH immunoreactivity in the striatum and SN, and DA levels in lesioned striatum. Lipid peroxidation induced by 6-OHDA was also inhibited by baicalein treatment. Furthermore, when SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells were treated with baicalein, 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were significantly reduced. These results indicate that baicalein effectively protects 6-OHDA-induced neuronal damage through antioxidant action.
