Meningiomas are the most common intracranial tumors. However, microcystic and angiomatous meningiomas are very rare subtypes that present unusual imaging findings. Hence, radiological diagnosis of these tumors can be challenging. We herein describe a case of mixed angiomatous and microcystic meningioma in an 81-year-old male. MRI revealed an extra-axial mass with high T2 signal intensity, measuring 1.5 cm in diameter, with multiple tiny intralesional cysts and entrapped peritumoral cyst formation. After tumor resection, a histopathological diagnosis of mixed angiomatous and microcystic meningioma was made.

Purpose This study aimed to determine the incremental value of using a structured report (SR) for US examinations of the pediatric appendix. Materials and Methods Between January 2009 and June 2016, 1150 pediatric patients with suspected appendicitis who underwent US examinations of the appendix were included retrospectively. In November 2012, we developed a five-point scale SR for appendix US examinations. The patients were divided into two groups according to the form of the US report: free-text or SR. The primary clinical outcomes were compared between the two groups, including the rate of CT imaging following US examinations, the negative appendectomy rate (NAR), and the appendiceal perforation rate (PR). Results In total, 550 patients were included in the free-text group and 600 patients in the SR group. The rate of additional CT examinations decreased by 5.3% in the SR group (8.2%, p = 0.003), and the NAR decreased by 8.4% in the SR group (7.8%, p = 0.028). There was no statistical difference in the appendiceal PR (37.6% vs. 48.0%, p = 0.078). Conclusion The use of an SR to evaluate US examinations for suspected pediatric appendicitis results in lower CT use and fewer negative appendectomies without an increase in appendiceal PR.
청각장애인 환자의 치과진료시 통증 표현을 위한 햅틱 피드백 프로토타입 디자인

청각장애인 환자의 치과진료 진행 과정에서 필담 및 거수 방식 외에 의사와 커뮤니케이션을 보조할 수 있는 방법이 부족하여 환자가 원활한 의료서비스를 받기 어려운 상황이다. 따라서 사용자 경험의 관점에서 청각장애인 환자의 통증 표현을 돕는 보조장치를 제안하여 환자-의사 커뮤니케이션에 도움을 줄 수 있는 방안 연구를 위한 기초자료를 마련하고자 한다. 먼저, 문헌연구에 기반하여 진동피드백을 주요한 표현 방법으로 선정했다. 다음으로 진동 피드백을 활용한 1 차 커뮤니케이션과 입체 그림 도식을 활용한 2 차 커뮤니케이션이 반영된 인터페이스와 인터랙션 디자인을 구상하여 햅틱 피드백 프로토타입 장치를 제작했다. 향후 청각장애인과 치과의사를 대상으로 인터뷰를 진행해 질적 연구를 수행하여 프로토타입 장치를 추가 보완하고 실제 임상에서 데모 가능한 작업으로 시연할 계획이다.
TOMM20 as a potential therapeutic target of colorectal cancer

Translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 20 (TOMM20) plays an essential role as a receptor for proteins targeted to mitochondria. TOMM20 was shown to be overexpressed in various cancers. However, the oncological function and therapeutic potential for TOMM20 in cancer remains largely unexplored. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanism of TOMM20’s contribution to tumorigenesis and to explore the possibility of its therapeutic potential using colorectal cancer as a model. The results show that TOMM20 overexpression resulted in an increase in cell proliferation, migration, and invasion of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, while siRNA-mediated inhibition of TOMM20 resulted in significant decreases in cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. TOMM20 expression directly impacted the mitochondrial function including ATP production and maintenance of membrane potential, which contributed to tumorigenic cellular activities including regulation of S phase cell cycle and apoptosis. TOMM20 was overexpressed in CRC compared to the normal tissues and increased expression of TOMM20 to be associated with malignant characteristics including a higher number of lymph nodes and perineural invasion in CRC. Notably, knockdown of TOMM20 in the xenograft mouse model resulted in a significant reduction of tumor growth. This is the first report demonstrating a relationship between TOMM20 and tumorigenesis in colorectal cancer and providing promising evidence for the potential for TOMM20 to serve as a new therapeutic target of colorectal cancer. T-cadherin is frequently down regulated in various cancers, however, the underlying mechanisms responsible have yet to be elucidated. A genome wide association study of a cohort of Korean adults revealed that the T-cadherin rs3865188 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was associated with serum Adiponectin levels and that its genotypic variants were correlated with risk for colorectal cancer (CRC). To test the function of rs12444338, a SNP tightly linked to the rs3865188 SNP, in T-cadherin transcriptional regulation in colorectal cancer, its effect on transcriptional activity and the capacity of binding activity attributable to allelic variation of the rs12444338 SNP was investigated. An electrophoretic-mobility-shift assay (EMSA) revealed a specific nucleoprotein complex unique to the T allele probe, which displayed lower promoter activity when compared to the G allele. Based on the results of the EMSA using mutant probes, the consensus sequence of the putative transcription factor binding site was determined. Additionally, candidates for putative binding factors to the T allele were also identified. Collectively, the study data suggested that the rs12444338 SNP was involved in transcriptional regulation of T-cadherin gene (CDH13) and that the differential binding of transcription factors at the rs12444338 SNP resulted in altered gene expression. These results elucidate, at least in part, the regulation of T-cadherin expression in CRC and provide further information regarding the effect of nucleotide variation in its promoter region.

To fabricate intermetallic nanoparticles with high oxygen reduction reaction activity, a high-temperature heat treatment of 700 to 1,000 ℃ is required. This heat treatment provides energy sufficient to induce an atomic rearrangement inside the alloy nanoparticles, increasing the mobility of particles, making them structurally unstable and causing a sintering phenomenon where they agglomerate together naturally. These problems cannot be avoided using a typical heat treatment process that only controls the gas atmosphere and temperature. In this study, as a strategy to overcome the limitations of the existing heat treatment process for the fabrication of intermetallic nanoparticles, we propose an interesting approach, to design a catalyst material structure for heat treatment rather than the process itself. In particular, we introduce a technology that first creates an intermetallic compound structure through a primary high-temperature heat treatment using random alloy particles coated with a carbon shell, and then establishes catalytic active sites by etching the carbon shell using a secondary heat treatment process. By using a carbon shell as a template, nanoparticles with an intermetallic structure can be kept very small while effectively controlling the catalytically active area, thereby creating an optimal alloy catalyst structure for fuel cells.
