Objective : Amniocentesis is the most prevailing procedures for prenatal cytogenetic analysis. We tried to elucidate the cytogenetic characteristics of amniocentesis performed in the Institute of Reproductive Medicine and Population, Seoul National University and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Seoul National University Hospital. Methods : From January 1994 to December 1999, transabdominal amniocentesis were performed for cytogenetic analysis in 1738 patients. Results : The most frequent indication for amniocentesis was advanced maternal age(43.4%, 755/1738) and the next was abnormal serum marker(31.7%, 552/1738). The overall incidence of abnormal karyotyping results was 5.4%(97/1788). We showed that the incidence of abnormal karyotyping was different according to its own indication (Pearson chi-square test, p$lt;0.001). Conclusion : The indication for genetic amniocentesis is an important factor to predict anticipated abnormal results.
자궁탈출증이외의 적응증에 대한 질식전자궁적출술의 임상적 고찰

Objective : To analyse the clinical aspects of total vaginal hysterectomy, we evaluated age distribution, parity, previous abdominal operations, indications for hysterectomy, postoperative pathology, combined operations, operation time, bleeding amount, hemoglobin change, weight of uterus, and postoperative complications. Methods : We reviewed the medical records of the 50 patients who underwent total vaginal hysterectomy for the indications other than uterine prolapse from July 1998 to June 1999 at chunchon Sacral Heart Hospital, Hallym University. Results : 1. Age distribution was from 31 to 55 years old and 78% of patients were in 36 to 45 years old group. 2. The most common parity was para 2 (56%) and the next was para 3 (30%). 3. The most common previous abdominal operation was laparoscopic tubal sterilization and followed by appendectomy, cesarean section, and pelvic operation. 4. The most common indication for vaginal hysterectomy was uterine myoma (74%) and followed by cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, atypical endometrial hyperplasia, and dysfunctional uterine bleeding. 5. The most common postoperative pathologic finding was uterine myoma (56%) and followed by adenomyosis, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, endometrial hyperplasia, endometrial polyp, endometriosis, microinvasive cervical cancer, and endometrial cancer. 6. The concurrent surgical procedures were ovarian cystectomy (6%), parovarian cystectomy (6%), salpingo-oophrectomy (6%), and anterior or posterior vaginal colporrhapy (10%). 7. The operative time was within 2 hour in almost all cases (98%). 8. The bleeding amount was within 500 cc in almost all cases (98%). 9. The hemoglobin change was within 3 g/dl in almost all cases (98%). 10. The weight of hysterectomized specimen was over 300gm in 32% of patients. 11. There were 5 cases (10%) of vaginal cuff hematoma with infection, 3 cases (6%) of upper respiratory infection, and 2 cases (4%) of bladder dysfunction as the postoperative complications. Conclusion : Total vaginal hysterectomy is a safe method for removing uterus even in the absence of prolapse. Recently it's indication is widening to the patient who has larger uterus and history of previous pelvic surgery. Because of it's advantage, total vaginal hysterectomy would be the preferred method of hysterectomy in the future.

<P>We present a fabrication method for nano-scale magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), employing e-beam lithography and lift-off process assisted by the probe tip of atomic force microscope (AFM). It is challenging to fabricate nano-sized MTJs on small substrates because it is difficult to use chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) process. The AFM-assisted lift-off process enables us to fabricate nano-sized MTJs on small substrates (12.5 mm x 12.5 mm) without CMP process. The e-beam patterning has been done using bi-layer resist, the poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA)/ hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ). The PMMA/HSQ resist patterns are used for both the etch mask for ion milling and the self-aligned mask for top contact formation after passivation. The self-aligned mask buried inside a passivation oxide layer, is readily lifted-off by the force exerted by the probe tip. The nano-MTJs (160 nm x 90 nm) fabricated by this method show clear current-induced magnetization switching with a reasonable TMR and critical switching current density.</P>

A series of copolyimides with various compositions were synthesized from pyromellitic dianhydride, benzophenconetetracarboxylic dianhydride, and methylenedianiline in N-methyl pyrrolid by the solution polycondensation followed by heat curing. The synthesized ployamic acids and polyimides were identified by means of FT-IR and elemental analysis, and their thermal properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimeter and thermogravimetric analysis. The experimental results showed that the thermal stabilities of the polyimides were increased with increasement of PMDA units.

<P>Postmortem pH is a main factor influencing the meat quality in pigs. This study investigated the association of postmortem pH with single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the fourth member of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase family (DHRS4), the first member of serpin peptidase inhibitor, clade G (complement inhibitor) (SERPING1), and the apolipoprotein R precursor (APOR) genes in Berkshire pigs. The study included 437 pigs, and genotyping was conducted using the GoldenGate Assay (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA). DHRS4, SERPING1, and APOR polymorphisms were significantly associated with pH(45) or pH(24) (p<0.05). SERPING1 was also statistically significantly associated with water holding capacity (p<0.05), which is closely associated with postmortem pH. These results suggest that SNPs in the DHRS4, SERPING1, and APOR genes have potential for use as genetic markers for the meat quality in pigs.</P>
