Eight bacterial strains, 18JY8-13, 18JY13-16, 18JY43-7, 18JY12-7, 18JY1-1, 18JY1-7, 18JY15-3, and 18JY7-2 assigned to the phylum Firmicutes were isolated from a variety of soil samples collected in the Jeju Island, Korea. Cells of the eight strains were Gram-positive, aerobic and showed resistant to UV-radiation. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strains 18JY8-13, 18JY13-16, 18JY43-7, 18JY12-7, 18JY1-1, 18JY1-7, 18JY15-3, and 18JY7-2 were most closely related to Bacillus paranthracis(99.9%), Bacillus paramycoides(99.6%), Bacillus australimaris(99.9%), Bacillus wiedmannii (100%), Bacillus halosaccharovorans(99.6%), Bacillus deserti(98.7%), Bacillus cereus (99.8%), and Bacillus albus(100%), respectively. This is the first report of these eight species in Korea.

Purpose: The goal of this study was to examine the effects of a preoperative education program in patients receiving Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) in a Korean military hospital. Methods: This study is nonequivalent control group, non-synchronized design quasi-experimental research. Patients were assigned to either the experimental (n=39) or the control group (n=34). The experimental group was provided with both an intensive preoperative education and a standard postoperative education about PCA while the control group received a standard postoperative education only. Knowledge of pain, knowledge of PCA, attitude to pain and analgesic, and postoperative pain scores at 8, 24, 48 hours were measured through questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed with χ2-test, t-test, ANCOVA and Generalized Estimating Equations. Results: Knowledge of pain significantly increased in the experimental group(F=4.47, p=.038) more than it did in the control group. Although knowledge of PCA increased and attitude of pain and analgesic improved in both groups. the gap between the two groups was not statistically significant. Postoperative pain at 8, 24, 48 hours improved in both groups, but the degree was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Intensive preoperative PCA education was effective in increasing knowledge of pain, but did not significantly improve knowledge of PCA, attitude of pain and analgesic, postoperative 8, 24, 48 hours pain score. A further study controlling various factors(e.g. type of anesthesia) and comprehensive pain management program may be needed to improve the attitude of pain and analgesic.

Pure gallium (Ga) is not widely studied for electrochemical CO2 reduction (EC CO2R) due to its low meltingpoint near room temperature. However, in this study, metallic Ga was selected and subjected to ECCO2R under varying conditions of applied potentials, electrolytes, concentrations, and photoirradiation. The results showed that formate, CO, and H2 were the major products produced and were dependenton the conditions used. The introduction of nickel (Ni) on the Ga electrode was found to open up longchain CAC bond coupling Fischer–Tropsch synthesis pathways, resulting in the production of longchainC2-6 hydrocarbons. This research provides new and valuable insights into the use of Ga for electrochemicalCO2 reduction and the development of Ga-based electrocatalysts for CO2 recycling.
Rapid Detection of Food Pathogens Using RNA Aptamers-Immobilized Slide

<P> The purpose of this study was to develop a simple and rapid detection system for foodborne bacteria, which consisted of an optical microscope and its slide chip with artificial antibodies, or RNA aptamers. From an RNA pool, three each RNA aptamers were built by the method of SELEX (systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment) for components of cell wall, LPS (lipopolysaccharide) from E. coli O157:H7, teichoic acid from <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I>and a cell membrane protein of OmpC from <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I>, respectively. These aptamers were hybridized with thiol-conjugated 16 dT-linker molecules in order to be immobilized on silver surface which was, in advance, fabricated on glass slide, using a spin-coating method. To confirm that each aptamers retained its specific binding activities to their antigenic live bacteria, microscopic view of bound cells immobilized on silver film were observed. Furthermore, we observed the fluorescence-emitting bacteria-aptamer complex immobilized on silver film after adding RNA aptamers hybridized with fluorophore, FAM-conjugated 16 dT-linker molecules. As a result, the RNA aptamers-immobilized slide system developed in this study was a useful new tool to rapidly monitor individual food pathogens. </P>
