Actinomycetes were isolated from soil to find new antibiotics. An active antimicrobial compound was isolated from the culture filtrate of Actinomycetes AF 21-3. The Actinomycetes strain which showed strong antifungal activity against Candida tropicalis and Microsporum gypseum was identified as Streptomyces fimbriatus and named as Streptomyces fimbriatus AF 21-3.

2016년 8월 3일부터 5일까지 제주특별자치도 서귀포시 대정읍 마라도 일대를 한국거미연구회 하계 합동채집회에 김주필, 예용택, 최한석, 장지현, 예성훈, 김태우, 김대희, 지승환, 이형민, 이형진, 신정애, 허양미, 이영경, 최라미, 이윤정 등이 채집조사한 결과 15과, 39속, 45종의 거미류가 조사연구되어 이에 보고하는 바이다. The authors investigated the spiders of the Mara Island in Jeju Island. In the present paper 45 species of 39 genera belong to 15 families were identified. These specimens are deposited at the Joo-Pil Spider Museum, Namyangju-Si, Kyunggi-Do.

The purpose of this study is to observe the potential antibiotic activities of some spices. The tested spices were red pepper, black pepper, garlic, Japanese pepper, mustard, cinnamon, ginger, wasabia koreana, curry-powder, green onion and onion. These spices were extracted with A solvent(95% ethanol 200㎖+10g of tartaric acid), B solvent(95% ethanol 200㎖ only), and C solvent (95% ethanol 200㎖+10g of sodium carbonate). The extracts were screened for the presence of their potential antibiotic activities against some microorganisms such as Salmonella typhi, Shigellaflexneri, Vibrio cholera classic, Staphylococcus aureus 3A, and Escherichia coli oil. The results are as follows: The garlic, the black pepper, the green onion, the onion, the ginger and the cinnamon showed antibiotic activity against Staphylococcus aureus 3A. Generally the cinnamon has the strongest effect against the Salmonella typhi, the activities of the black pepper and the green onion were less strong than the cinnamon. The cinnamon has the strongest one against the Shigella flexneri, the green onion and the onion were moderately strong. The black pepper, the curry powder and the Japanese pepper were less strong than the above. The garlic, the cinnamon, the ginger, and the green onion have the strongest effect against the Vibrio cholera, the others were moderately strong. Theicmnamon and the onion have the strongest effect against the Escherichia coli, the garlic, the black pepper, the curry powder, the Japanese pepper and the green onion were strong. The dressing material has the antibiotic activities against the Vibrio cholera, the Escherichia coli and the Shigella flexneri.

2014년 8월 5일부터 7일까지 경상남도 창녕군 일대에 위치한 대한민국 최대의 내륙 습지인 우포늪 일대를 한국거미연구회 회원(김주필, 예용택, 장지현, 오종화, 예성훈, 유혜성, 채준호, 김태우, 김민섭, 변진관, 성민규, 김지후, 김대희, 김녕, 이정준, 이형민 등 16명)들이 채집 조사한 결과 16과 48속 69종의 거미가 조사 연구되어 이에 보고하는 바이다. The authors investigated the spiders of the Upo wetland from 5th August to 7th August, 2014. In the present paper 69 species of 48 genera belong to 16 families were identified. These specimens are deposited at the Joo-Pil Spider Museum, Namyangju-Si, Kyunggi-Do.
The First Reported Case of Infant Botulism in Korea: Treatable Infantile Neuromuscular Disease

Botulism is a rare neuromuscular disorder caused by neurotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum. The diagnosis of infant botulism may be obscured or delayed, as its presentation is similar to that of infantile neuromuscular disorders. We report the first Korean case of infant botulism in an acute progressive floppy infant with poor sucking and a weak cry. No abnormalities were found in all blood, cerebrospinal fluid, genetic test, nerve conduction study, and imaging studies. A stool-toxin test was finally performed under suspicion of infant botulism, and the result was positive. The patient was immediately treated with heptavalent botulism antitoxin. Follow-up after 3 months showed normal development with a complete resolution of all symptoms. Therefore, clinical suspicion of infant botulism, which is a treatable infantile neuromuscular disease, is essential for early diagnosis and prompt treatment in the differential diagnosis of a floppy infant.
Loganin Prevents Hepatic Steatosis by Blocking NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation

Activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome is a necessary process to induce fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a kind of NAFLD that encompasses the spectrum of liver disease. It is characterized by inflammation and ballooning of hepatocytes during steatosis. We tested whether inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome could prevent the development and pathology of NASH. We identified loganin as an inhibitor of the NLRP3 inflammasome and investigated whether in vivo administration of loganin prevented NASH symptoms using a methionine-choline deficient (MCD) diet model in mice. We found that loganin inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome activation triggered by ATP or nigericin, as shown by suppression of the production of interleukin (IL)-1β and caspase-1 (p10) in mouse primary macrophages. The speck formation of apoptosisassociated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (ASC) was blocked by loganin, showing that the assembly of the NLRP3 inflammasome complex was impaired by loganin. Administration of loganin reduced the clinical signs of NASH in mice fed the MCD diet, including hepatic inflammation, fat accumulation, and fibrosis. In addition, loganin reduced the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome components in the liver. Our findings indicate that loganin alleviates the inflammatory symptoms associated with NASH, presumably by inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation. In summary, these findings imply that loganin may be a novel nutritional and therapeutic treatment for NASH-related inflammation.
당뇨 쥐에 대한 한약재복합추출물로 만든 현미율무밥의 혈당강하 효과

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate boiled rice made from unpolished rice, Job`s Tears, and extract from medicinal herbs mixture (HGMCJE) for hypoglycemic effect on STZ-induced diabetic rats. Methods : In the response of glucose tolerance, control and diabetic rats groups was intubated with glucose and HGMCJE. Furthermore, boiled 100% polished rice (P rice), boiled unpolished rice mixed with white rice and Job`s tears (polished rice:unpolished rice:Job`s tears=60:25:15, UPJ-rice), and UPJ rice made from HGMCJE (HUPJ-rice) were intubated to control and diabetic rats groups, respectively. Then, blood glucose concentration, incremental blood glucose, and area under the curve (ΔAUC) were analyzed in every experimental groups, and these data were used to evaluate glycemic response. Results : When glucose and p rice were intubated in control and diabetic rats, blood glucose concentration, incremental blood glucose, and incremental response ΔAUC of diabetic groups were significantly increase than control groups. But administraion of a single dose of extract from medicinal herbs mixture and HUPJ-rice in control and diabetic rats inhibited the remarkable increase the level of postprandial blood and ΔAUC at 60, 90, and 120 min Conclusions : These results indicate that when intubation of glucose and P rice were out of control on postprandial glycemic response in diabetic rats. But postprandial glycemic response was well-modulated by administrating a single oral dose of HGMCJE and HUPJ-rice. Therefore, HGMCJE can be developed as an effective hypoglycemic agent.
