        In the mobile Internet environment, we need to perform frequent accesses between a mobile device and a content server for searching or downloading learning materials. In this paper, we propose an efficient prefetching technique to reduce the network cost and to improve the communication efficiency in the mobile dictionary. Contributions of the paper can be summarized as follows. First, we propose an overall framework for the prefetching-based mobile dictionary. Second, we present a method of determining the amount of prefetching data for each of packet-based and flat-rate billing cases. Third, by focusing on the English-Korean mobile dictionary for middle or high school students, we propose a method of determining the words to be prefetched in advance. Fourth, based on these determination methods, we propose an efficient prefetching algorithm. Fifth, through experiments, we show superiority of our prefetching-based method. Experimental results show that, compared with the traditional on-demand method, our prefetching-based method improves the average performance by 9.8%~19.7% for the packet-based billing and by 19.0%~33.2% for the flat-rate billing. These results indicate that our framework can be widely used not only in the mobile dictionary but also in other mobile Internet applications that require the prefetching technique.

      • 온라인 교육 사이트의 교육 환경 및 효과 분석

        In recent years, people are gradually interested in the Internet-based educational programs (also known as e-learning and cyber lectures), and online education is now widely used in various educational areas. In this paper, considering the environment and achievement aspects we analyze online education by dividing it into public education and private education. We analyze the online education as the following steps. First, we review the recent online educational methods by comparing them to the traditional offline educational ones. Second, we compare EBS, a representative public educational site, and Megastudy, a representative private educational site, by investigating their operation, human, economic, hardware, and software resources. Third, we compare EBS and Megastudy in aspects of environment and achievement through a survey on high-school students after providing their sample lectures. Analytical results show that the students of using Megastudy get good grades compared with those of using Megastudy. This is because Megastudy provides the specialized lectures that focus on obtaining high scores in examinations. We believe that our research results will provide important directions in improving the quality of online educational sites.

      • 시계열 매칭 기반의 윤곽선 이미지 매칭 시스템 설계 및 구현

        In this paper we exploit time-series matching for boundary image matching. The motivation is based on that images can be converted to time-series. Thus, we implement a boundary image matching system using time-series matching techniques. We use an index-based matching method that efficiently performs boundary image matching. We implement our boundary matching system as a client-server model. Experimental results show that our index-based method outperforms the sequential scan by one to three orders of magnitude. Our system is practically implemented for image matching through the appropriate techniques in the time-series domain, and we thus believe that our approach can be widely used in image matching areas.

      • RSS기반 블로그 에이전트를 사용한 교육용 블로그 구현

        More than 80% of the Internet users are familiar with blogs and exploit blogs as their primary communication tools in Korea. These blogs are widely used as a representative personal media service in educational applications as well as business marketing or information sharing applications. In this paper, we present an efficient mechanism of using blogs for educational applications. For this, we first investigate the major problems that the current educational blog sites have. We then propose a new notion of the blog agent that solves the problems and makes it easy to exploit blogs for educational applications. Contributions of the paper can be summarized as follows. First, we investigate the problems with respect to the homework management by analyzing the existing educational blog sites. Second, we present how we can solve the problems by using blog agent. Third, we show that, if exploiting the blog agent, we can easily design blog sites for homework, consultation, or lecture material management. Fourth, through a survey on current blog-related techniques, we select the RSS-based technique to implement our intelligent blog agent. Fifth, we implement the blog sites for homework, consultation, and lecture material management by using "Cyworld's Paper," which is one of RSS-based blog techniques.

      • 스프레드시트 방식의 OLAP 인터페이스를 위한 시트 분할 기법

        OLAP(Online-Analytical Processing) is widely used to analyze multidimensional data extracted from a huge size of source operational databases and to provide a useful information for business decision making. OLAP tools provide a variety of ways to analyze and to browse data which are not familiar with end users. But spreadsheet tools like MS Excel are very popular in real-world to calculate some statistics from source data and to analyze them. In this research, we implemented a spreadsheet-like tool on the top of relational databases to support OLAP operations and to browse the results of analytical queries. For implementing the tool, we propose a sheet partition function for spreadsheets which partitions a relational table into multiple sheet based on the number of rows or (dimensional) attribute values. This function can enable users to view a physically stored table as a set of spreadsheets like Excel thus users can browse the stored table as if it is spreadsheets. With this spreadsheet-like interface, users will be able to handle multidimensional data stored in relational databases in more user-friendly way.

        A Nickel Nanowire Diluter Operating through the Principle of the Dielectrophoretic Attraction Force

        This paper presents a microfabricated nanowire diluter which dilutes the concentration of nanowires in solution instead of by the conventional centrifuge process. The device has 16 pairs of gold electrodes in a micro channel composed of a glass substrate and PDMS. We prepared nickel nanowires by the template-directed electrodeposition method using nanoporous anodized aluminum template (AAO). We injected the Dimethylformamide (DMF) solution containing nanowires into the inlet of the diluter while applying square wave voltages on the electrodes to trap the nanowires at the subsequent gold electrodes by means of dielectrophoretic attraction forces. The concentration of nanowires at the outlet of the micro channel was changed as we expected, which illustrates that the device can effectively dilute nanowires and can be applied to a controlled assembly of nanowires.

        Lung Disease Diagnostic Model Through IgG Sensitization to Microbial Extracellular Vesicles

        Purpose: Recently, there has been a rise in the interest to understand the composition of indoor dust due to its association with lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Furthermore, it has been found that bacterial extracellular vesicles (EVs) within indoor dust particles can induce pulmonary inflammation, suggesting that these might play a role in lung disease. Methods: We performed microbiome analysis of indoor dust EVs isolated from mattresses in apartments and hospitals. We developed diagnostic models based on the bacterial EVs antibodies detected in serum samples via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in this analysis. Results: Proteobacteria was the most abundant bacterial EV taxa observed at the phylum level while Pseudomonas, Enterobacteriaceae (f) and Acinetobacter were the most prominent organisms at the genus level, followed by Staphylococcus. Based on the microbiome analysis, serum anti-bacterial EV immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgG1 and IgG4 were analyzed using ELISA with EV antibodies that targeted Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterobacter cloacae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The levels of anti-bacterial EV antibodies were found to be significantly higher in patients with asthma, COPD and lung cancer compared to the healthy control group. We then developed a diagnostic model through logistic regression of antibodies that showed significant differences between groups with smoking history as a covariate. Four different variable selection methods were compared to construct an optimal diagnostic model with area under the curves ranging from 0.72 to 0.81. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that ELISA-based analysis of anti-bacterial EV antibodies titers can be used as a diagnostic tool for lung disease. The present findings provide insights into the pathogenesis of lung disease as well as a foundation for developing a novel diagnostic methodology that synergizes microbial EV metagenomics and immune assays.

        Microbe-derived extracellular vesicles as a smart drug delivery system

        The human microbiome is known to play an essential role in influencing host health. Extracellularvesicles (EVs) have also been reported to act on a variety of signaling pathways, distally transportcellular components such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acid, and have immunomodulatory effects. Here we shall review the current understanding of the intersectionality of the human microbiomeand EVs in the emerging field of microbiota-derived EVs and their pharmacological potential. Microbessecrete several classes of EVs: outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), membrane vesicles (MVs),and apoptotic bodies. EV biogenesis is unique to each cell and regulated by sophisticated signalingpathways. EVs are primarily composed of lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and recent evidence suggeststhey may also carry metabolites. These components interact with host cells and control variouscellular processes by transferring their constituents. The pharmacological potential of microbiomederivedEVs as vaccine candidates, biomarkers, and a smart drug delivery system is a promisingarea of future research. Therefore, it is necessary to elucidate in detail the mechanisms of microbiome-derived EV action in host health in a multi-disciplinary manner.

      • Importance of indoor dust biological ultrafine particles in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory lung diseases

        The role of infectious agents in the etiology of inflammatory diseases once believed to be non-infectious is increasingly being recognized. Many bacterial components in the indoor dust can evoke inflammatory lung diseases. Bacteria secrete nanometer-sized vesicles into the extracellular milieu, so-called extracellular vesicles (EV). which are pathophysiologically related to inflammatory diseases. Microbiota compositions in the indoor dust revealed the presence of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Escherichia coli is a model organism of Gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae. The repeated inhalation of E. coli -derived EVs caused neutrophilic inflammation and emphysema in a dose-dependent manner. The emphysema induced by E. coli -derived EVs was partially eliminated by the absence of Interferon-gamma or interleukin-17, suggesting that Th1 and/or Th17 cell responses are important in the emphysema development. Meanwhile, the repeated inhalation of Staphylococcus aureus -derived EVs did not induce emphysema, although they induced neutrophilic inflammation in the lung. In terms of microbial EV compositions in the indoor dust, genera Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, and Staphylococcus were dominant. As for the clinical significance of sensitization to EVs in the indoor dust, EV sensitization was closely associated with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), and lung cancer. These data indicate that biological ultrafine particles in the indoor dust, which are mainly composed of microbial EVs, are important in the pathogenesis of chronic lung diseases associated with neutrophilic inflammation. Taken together, microbial EVs in the indoor dust are an important diagnostic and therapeutic target for the control of chronic lung diseases, such as asthma, COPD, and lung cancer.

        Development of a colorectal cancer diagnostic model and dietary risk assessment through gut microbiome analysis

        Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common form of cancer and poses a critical public health threat due to theglobal spread of westernized diets high in meat, cholesterol, and fat. Although the link between diet and colorectalcancer has been well established, the mediating role of the gut microbiota remains elusive. In this study, we sought toelucidate the connection between the gut microbiota, diet, and CRC through metagenomic analysis of bacteriaisolated from the stool of CRC (n = 89) and healthy (n = 161) subjects. This analysis yielded a dozen genera that weresignificantly altered in CRC patients, including increased Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Dorea, and Porphyromonasprevalence and diminished Pseudomonas, Prevotella, Acinetobacter, and Catenibacterium carriage. Based on thesealtered genera, we developed two novel CRC diagnostic models through stepwise selection and a simplified modelusing two increased and two decreased genera. As both models yielded strong AUC values above 0.8, the simplifiedmodel was applied to assess diet-based CRC risk in mice. Mice fed a westernized high-fat diet (HFD) showed greaterCRC risk than mice fed a regular chow diet. Furthermore, we found that nonglutinous rice, glutinous rice, and sorghumconsumption reduced CRC risk in HFD-fed mice. Collectively, these findings support the critical mediating role of thegut microbiota in diet-induced CRC risk as well as the potential of dietary grain intake to reduce microbiota-associatedCRC risk. Further study is required to validate the diagnostic prediction models developed in this study as well as thepreventive potential of grain consumption to reduce CRC risk.
