        Polyozellus multiplex가 생산하는 지질과산화 저해물질

        담자균류로부터 지질과산화 저해물질을 탐색하던 중 강원도 오대산 지역에 자생하는 버섯의 한 종류로 부터, Sparague-Dawley계 rat의 간 mirosome 분획의 지질과산화를 강하게 억제하는 물질이 있음을 발견하였다. 이 버섯의 미생물학적 특성을 관찰한 결과 민주름버섯목, 굴뚝버섯과에 속하는 까치버섯(Polyzellus multiplex)으로 동정하였으며 본 버섯의 자실체 methanol 추출물을 benzene, ethylacetate로 순차적으로 추출하고 각종 chromatography를 이용하여 활성물질을 정제한 결과, ethylacetate층으로 부터 황산화활성을 나타내는 PM1을 benzene층으로 부터 지방산 계열의 PM2와 PM3 화합물을 순수하게 분리 정제하였다. PM1은 정색반응 및 각종 기기분석 결과 thelephoric acid계의 화합물로 동정되었으며 PM2 및 PM3는 각각 linoleic acid와 oleic acid로 동정되었다. 지질과산화 활성물질로 분리정제한 PM1 화합물의 IC_50 값은 1.96 ppm이었으며 LD_50 값은 500 mg/Kg 이상이었다. In the course of screening lipid peroxidation inhibitor from basidiomycetes, a mushroom, which was collected at O-Dae mountain in Kangweon-Do, was found to have active compound. The mushroom was identified as Polyzellus multiplex, which belongs to Aphylloporalles Thelephoraceae, on the basis of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the fruiting body. The methanol extract of fruiting body was extracted with benzene and ethylacetate, sequentially. By using various kinds of chromatographies, PM1, and PM2 and PM3, were purified from the ethylacetate extract and the benzene extract, respectively. Color reaction and analyses of IR, UV, and NMR spectra indicated that PM1 was a derivative of thelephoric acid, and PM2 and PM3 were linoleic acid and oleic acid, respectively. IC_50 of PM1 for inhibition of lipid peroxidation was 1.96 ppm and LD_50 was 500 mg/kg.

        Consumers' Susceptibility to Global Culture and Their Attitude toward the Global SPA Brand

        Purpose - This study examined the effects of susceptibility to global consumer culture (SGCC) on the brand attitude of consumers of the global SPA brand in South Korea. Research Design, Data, and Methodology -Questionnaires were used, and the sample that was extracted by the convenience sampling method comprised 703 males and females, aged 20-36. The data were analyzed with SPSS 16.0 and Amos 5.0 for frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling analysis. Results - First, conformity to consumption trends was found to have a significant effect on all four variables of SPA brand attitude (brand favorability, uniqueness, ethicality, and economic utility). Second, quality perception was found to have a significant effect on brand favorability, uniqueness, ethicality, and economic utility. Third, social prestige was found to have a positive effect on uniqueness. Conclusions - The results show that consumers' susceptibility to global culture is a significant factor in their attitude to the global SPA brand. Therefore, it would be more effective if the global SPA brand develops recognition among consumers that its products play a role in sharing new trends and global lifestyles.

        The role of skin antisepsis in upper extremity surgery to reduce surgical site infection: a comparison between single and triple regimens

        Purpose: No consensus exits regarding preoperative skin antisepsis for upper extremity surgery. We aimed to determine whether the use of povidone-iodine only (single regimen) instead of povidone-iodine and alcohol-chlorhexidine (triple regimen) resulted in an increased rate of surgical site infection (SSI), and to detect any associated factors that increased the infection risk. Methods: A cross-sectional, retrospective review of medical records was conducted for patients who underwent upper extremity surgery from March 2020 to February 2021. Either the single or triple regimen was used for preoperative skin antisepsis. The rate of SSI was compared based on a marked elevation of C-reactive protein (CRP) at 2 weeks after surgery, superficial SSI, and deep SSI. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with SSI among the evaluated parameters. Results: Among 175 patients (male, 81 and female, 94), the single regimen was used in 78 patients (44.6%) and the triple regimen in 97 patients (55.4%). The single regimen (odds ratio [OR], 2.425; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.040–5.655) and a surgical procedure using a metal implant (OR, 3.602; 95% CI, 1.184–10.953) were significantly associated with a marked CRP elevation at 2 weeks. However, there was no difference in SSI rates between the single and triple regimens. Diabetes mellitus (OR, 6.636; 95% CI, 1.259–34.969) was the only factor significantly associated with superficial SSI through logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: Our study suggests that the single regimen resulted in a longer CRP elevation than the triple regimen, but was similarly effective in preventing SSI for upper extremity surgery.

        The Natural History of Kienböck’s Disease Diagnosed at More than 50 Years of Age

        Background: Previous literatures suggest that the prognosis of Kienböck’s disease might be favorable despite no surgery if it is diagnosed in late age, but the evidence is not clear. The aim of this study was to determine the radiographic and clinical progression of Kienböck’s disease diagnosed at more than 50 years of age. Methods: Data of 27 patients diagnosed with Kienböck’s disease at more than 50 years of age between 2000 and 2016 were investigated. During the study period, no treatment, either surgical or nonsurgical, was applied. We explained to the patients that the affected lunate was not expected to collapse further if found late in age. Annual visits were recommended, through which radiographic and clinical observation was made. We assessed changes in Stahl index and radioscaphoid angle between the initial assessment and the final follow-up, and clinical assessment was made using pain in visual analog scale (VAS) and Dornan’s criteria. Results: Initially, 2 patients were in Lichtman stage 1, 6 in stage 2, 5 in stage 3A, 11 in stage 3B, and 3 in stage 4. Radiographic follow-up of at least 5 years (mean, 7.8 years) was made in 14 patients, whose Stahl index and radioscaphoid angle did not differ significantly from their initial measurements. Arthritic appearance was not found, and progression in the Lichtman stage was detected in 1 lunate, from 3A to 3B. Despite no surgical treatment for an average of 7.5 years (range, 5.0–15.7 years) of observation period in the 27 patients, average pain in VAS improved from 3.5 (range, 1–7) to 0.8 (range, 0–2), with excellent or good clinical status by Dornan’s criteria. Conclusions: Our study suggests that Kienböck’s disease diagnosed at more than 50 years of age can follow a benign natural course in radiographic and clinical aspects. Therefore, surgical interventions should be considered carefully in this age group.

        Theses: Purchasing Status and Attitude of Female College Students towards Luxury Counterfeit Goods and Their Relationship to Social Self-Concept

        The purpose of the study was to analyze the purchasing status of luxury brand counterfeit goods of female college students, and to investigate the influence of students` social self-concept on their attitude towards luxury counterfeit products. The study was implemented by a descriptive survey method using a self-administerd questionnaire. The sample consisted of 224 female college students residing in Seoul and Busan. The data were analysed through frequency, factor analysis, and regression analysis. The results were as follows. First, it was observed that 42.40% of the respondents have had the experience of purchasing counterfeit items. The major reasons for purchasing counterfeit goods, it was discovered, were not only the low price but also their perceived good quality. Among the reasons for not purchasing counterfeit products, the emotional reason was more significant than the intellectual reason. Second, female college students` social self-concept was found to have an influence on their social negative attitudes towards luxury brand counterfeits. Third, it was found that the social self concept was closely related to the satisfaction with the counterfeit purchases. Fourth, it was discovered that the social self-concept of the students significantly affected the intention to repurchase.

      • Age-dependent expression of immune-privilege and proliferation-related molecules on porcine Sertoli cells

        <P>AbstractBackground</P><P>The immunoprotective nature of the testes has prompted numerous investigations into their supportive roles during allogeneic or xenogeneic cellular grafts. However, the optimal developmental stage of these cells in terms of maximum efficacy for cellular grafts has not been elucidated. In this study, the time-dependent expressions of immune-privilege- and proliferation-related molecules in Sertoli cells were determined.</P><P>Methods</P><P>To investigate the time course of the expression of proteins related to immune privilege and proliferation, immunohistochemistry and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were performed using testes of 18 Yorkshire pigs from birth to 20 weeks of age. We included fas ligand (FasL), transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) and clusterin as the immune-protective molecules, and follicle stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR), p27<SUP>Kip1</SUP>, GATA-4 and Wilm's tumor antigen (WT1) as Sertoli cell proliferation markers. RT-PCR was used to complement histological assessment.</P><P>Results</P><P>The expression of FasL in Sertoli cells gradually increased with age, whereas TGF-β1 showed the reverse pattern, and clusterin expression showed no age-related difference. p27<SUP>Kip1</SUP> showed a gradual increase in its expression from week 12, but GATA-4 showed earlier postnatal expression from birth to week 12. WT1 expression gradually increased from week 16.</P><P>Conclusion</P><P>We confirmed the age-dependent expression of immune-privilege- and proliferation-related molecules in porcine Sertoli cells. These data may be useful for determining the optimal time for harvesting Sertoli cells with respect to maximal immunoprotection and proliferative activity.</P>

        Treadmill Exercise Improves Memory Function Depending on Circadian Rhythm Changes in Mice

        <P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>Exercise enhances memory function by increasing neurogenesis in the hippocampus, and circadian rhythms modulate synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. The circadian rhythm-dependent effects of treadmill exercise on memory function in relation with neurogenesis were investigated using mice.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>The step-down avoidance test was used to evaluate short-term memory, the 8-arm maze test was used to test spatial learning ability, and 5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine immunofluorescence was used to assess neurogenesis. Western blotting was also performed to assess levels of synaptic plasticity-associated proteins, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, tyrosine kinase receptor B, phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein, early growth response protein 1, postsynaptic density protein 95, and growth-associated protein 43. The mice in the treadmill exercise at zeitgeber 1 group started exercising 1 hour after sunrise, the mice in the treadmill exercise at zeitgeber 6 group started exercising 6 hours after sunrise, and the mice in the treadmill exercise at zeitgeber 13 group started exercising 1 hour after sunset. The mice in the exercise groups were forced to run on a motorized treadmill for 30 minutes once a day for 7 weeks.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Treadmill exercise improved short-term memory and spatial learning ability, and increased hippocampal neurogenesis and the expression of synaptic plasticity-associated proteins. These effects of treadmill exercise were stronger in mice that exercised during the day or in the evening than in mice that exercised at dawn.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Treadmill exercise improved memory function by increasing neurogenesis and the expression of synaptic plasticity-associated proteins. These results suggest that the memory-enhancing effect of treadmill exercise may depend on circadian rhythm changes.</P>
