        Risk mitigation strategy by Passive IN-core Cooling system for advanced nuclear reactors

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>After the Fukushima accident, the installation of passive safety systems for nuclear power plants becomes necessary as protection against external power failures. Recently, an innovative safety system was introduced by employing a hybrid heat-pipe concept asa Passive IN-core Cooling system (PINCs). The hybrid heat-pipe concept employs the combination of a control rod and a heat pipe to passively shutdown a reactor in an accident condition and simultaneously remove decay heat from the core. As a result, a PINCs can handle the entire accident sequence in a single system, leading to significant enhancement in nuclear reactor safety. In this study, the safety enhancement of various nuclear reactors has been quantitatively evaluated by using the probabilistic safety assessment method (PSA). PSA models of the APR1400, PGSFR, and SMART nuclear reactors developed in Korea, are developed, and a PINCs model has been applied to each reactor. The PSA model of the PINCs has been developed based on the systematic design and configuration of each reactor. In addition, postulated accident sequences where the PINCs operates have been developed in the PSA model. Finally, the consequence of each accident sequence has been quantitatively evaluated in the form of core damage frequency (CDF) and minimal cut set (MCS) for each nuclear reactor. Based on the PSA results, it is confirmed that the application of the PINCs effectively reduces the overall CDF of all nuclear reactors. In addition, the failure paths causing the core damage are restricted for APR1400 and PGSFR. In conclusion, the employment of the PINCs significantly improved the overall safety degrees of various nuclear reactors.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> PINCs combines a control rod and a heat pipe to enhance safety of advanced reactors. </LI> <LI> PSA models of advanced reactors are developed including PINCs. </LI> <LI> The consequences of the accident aided by PINCs are quantitatively evaluated. </LI> <LI> PINCs significantly reduces the overall CDFs of all nuclear reactors. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Selective electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to formic acid using indium-zinc bimetallic nanocrystals

        <P>For the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CRR) with high selectivity for HCOOH, In-Zn bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized as catalysts by <I>in situ</I> reduction of In2O3-ZnO NCs with various compositions. All In-containing bimetallic catalysts exhibited excellent selectivity to produce HCOOH, while Zn NCs favor CO production. A composition with In : Zn = 0.05 has higher catalytic activity than In NCs, with a faradaic efficiency of 95% and a HCOOH production rate of 0.40 mmol h<SUP>−1</SUP> cm<SUP>−2</SUP> at −1.2 V <I>vs.</I> RHE. The enhanced catalytic performance is in part ascribed to the fewer surface oxide layers, which increase the conductivity and facilitate the charge transfer. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the In-Zn interfacial sites make the HCOOH pathway significantly energy-favorable, which supports the higher production rate of Zn0.95In0.05 than that of In.</P>

        1910년대 강릉 여자의 서울 구경 : <서유록>의 경우

        This essay is the study on 〈서유록(SEO-YU-ROK〉which is the record of a woman's Seoul tour in 1913. She, aged 52, lived in Kangnung, Kangwondo and has been sightseeing of Seoul for 35 days with her husband and daughter. The writer Lady Kim's family was civilized enough to subscribe to a newspaper. Through this work we can see the way from Kangnung to Seoul, customs of those days, and Japan's encroachment to Chosun, And her sightseeing of Seoul shows us various interesting features (for example school, train, bank, theater and shops which sell modern things). Though there are no insights about the difference between the Japan's invasion and the development of modern civilization, it shows us the images of Seoul through the eyes of an intelligent woman who had lived in country during 1910s. I think this work is important as a representative prose of a woman in 1910s. Usually women had been alienated from the world of prose which was written by criticism. So this work, as a woman's Hangeul prose which is rare those days, is very accountable. (Yeungnam University)

      • 벼 잎집썩음병의 發生과 그 防際 對策에 關한 硏究

        1. 벼 잎집썩음병의 발육온도는 20℃∼28℃였다. 2. 벼 잎집썩음병의 생장에 알맞는 pH는 7.0∼9.0사이였고, 배양 후 배양액의 pH는 8.0∼8.8로 변하였다. 3. 재배 환경과 발병과의 관계는 질소질 비료를 증시할수록 피해가 심했고, 이앙시기는 늦을수록, 재식밀도는 높을수록 발병이 많았다. 4.약제방제는 벤레이트, 히노산이 효과가 우세하였다. 1. This fungus grows well in the temperature range of 20∼28℃. 2. The pH of optimum growth in culture was in the range of 8.4∼8.8. However, growth was quite good over the range of 6.0∼9.0. 3. Favourable conditions for disease outbreaks included use of nitrogen fertilizer, transplanting late stage of growth, and close planting. 4. The most effective fungicides were Benlate, Hinosan.

        KSDeNTM 공정에서 C/P 비, SRT, 온도 및 질산염 농도가 인 제거에 미치는 영향

        In this study, the effects of C/P ratio, SRT, temperature and nitrate concentration on the phosphorus removal efficiency of KSDeN™ process (KOWACO-Ssangyong DeNutrient process) was investigated with a pilot plant, which is fed with the grit chamber effluent of 'J' MWWTP (Municipal Wastewater Treatment Process). During the operating period, T-P removal efficiency was more than 80% at C/P ratio (TCOD_Cr/T-P ratio) of 35 or above, and it was higher at relatively low temperature and high C/P ratio. At SRT (Sludge Retention Time)'s of 3-28 days, phosphorus removal efficiency increased up to 90% until the SRT reached 20 days. The phosphorus removal efficiency decreased rapidly with more than 20 days of SRT, which showed that the optimal SRT is 20 days for the T-P removal of KSDeN™ process. Effluent T-P concentration increased with increasing temperature. It is considered that the competition on organic compounds between PAOs (Phosphorus Accumulating Organisms) and denitrifiers resulted in lowering T-P removal by activating nitrifiers at 15℃ or above. The release of phosphorus was influenced by nitrate concentration in anaerobic/anoxic tank. When the nitrate concentration was higher than 2 ㎎/L, the release of phosphorus was disturbed by denitrifiers. SCOD and PO^3-_4-P profile with each reactors of KSDeN™ process showed typical behavior of phosphorus release and luxury uptake by PAOs.

      • 급성 림프구성 백혈병의 면역학적 분류 및 림프 芽細胞의 시험관내 分化誘導에 대한 연구

        The theory that various hematologic malignancies, such as acute and chronic leukemias and lymphomas, are characterized by monoclonal expansion of neoplastic cells arrested at different levels along the hemo-lymphopoietic differentiation pathway is widly accepted. It has also been supported by immunoglobulin gene rearrangement and phenotyping with specific antibodies to surface markers of lymphocytes concerning the lymphoid malignancies. In cope with these developments, the immunologic classification of acute lymphocytic leukemia has become more clarified. The author studied the immunologic classification of 15 patients with acute lymphocytic eukemia(ALL) with monoclonal antibodies against surface markers for lymphoid cells, and tried the in vitro induction of differentiation of progenitor-B cell ALL and T-cell ALL with TPA(12-0-tetrad ecanoyl phobol-13-acetate), a well known tumor promoter and known as a differentiation inducer also. Monoclonal antibodies for surface markers, used in this study, were Leu-9 for_T-cell ALL and anti-la, anti-CALLA, anti-SIg(surface immunoglobulin), anti-B1, and anti-B4 for B-cell lineage ALL. Leu-9 positive cases were classified as T-cell ALL, Ia only positive cases were classified as progenitor-B ALL, la and CALLA positive cases were classified as common ALL, and Ia and SIg positive cases were classificed as B-cell ALL. The results were as followings, 1. In this study, 5 cases were classificed as common ALL, 3 each cases were B-cell ALL and progenitor--B cell ALL, and 4 cases were T-cell ALL. 2. All 3 cases of B-cell ALL were L2 by FAB classification, and this findings was discordant with the conventional knowledge. 3. Leukocyte count in pheripheral blood of T-cell ALL patients at diagnosis was higher than that of non-T cell ALL (p<0.05). 4. All 5 cases of common ALL and 3 cases of B-cell ALL, 2 of 3 cases of progenitor-B cell ALL, and I of 4 cases of T-cell ALL achieved complete remission. So, T-cell ALL showed lower remission rate than that of common ALL and B-cell ALL. 5. One case of progenitor-B cell ALL, which is positive to only Ia, newly expressed B₄, CALLA, B₁and SIg after culture with TPA. This results suggest -that TPA induce the differentiation of progentior-B cells to more differedtiated stage. 6. One case of T-cell ALL, which is positive to only Leu-9, newly expressed T3 after culture with TPA and PHA. This results suggest that TPA and PHA induce the differentiation of early thymocyte to mature thymocyte.

      • 1982년 충남지방에 발생한 성인뇌염에 대한 임상적 고찰

        In the epidemic season of 1982, we experienced unusually greater numbers of adult patient with Japanese encephalitis around the country. During the season we have seen fourty nine cases of adult encephalitis in selected area of Chungchong Do. The peak age prevalence was 15-20 years aged group and the incidence ratio of male to female was 2:1. The main clinical manifestations of adult encephalitis were fever, headache, disturbances of consciousness, Nuchal rigidity and accelerated deep tendon reflexes etc. The positive rate of initial hemagglutination inbibition test was 30.3% but it was increased to 51.5% after following examination. The types of sequelas were speech disturbance, monoplegia, gait disturbance and personality change etc. The motility rate was 10.2% with that of 6.1% in the male and 18.7% in the female.

        고온초전도체 in-situ ramp-edge 형태의 조셉슨 접합 제작 및 특성

        본 연구에서는 금속 칼날 마스크와 펄스형 레이저 증착장치를 이용하여 $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$/$SrTiO_{3}$/$YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ 다층박막 형태의 In-situ SIS ramp dege 형태의 접합을 제작하였으며, 이의 특성을 조사하였다. 접합은 RSJ 형태의 전류-전압 특성ㅇ르 나타내고 있으며, 온도 변화에 따른 접합의 normal resistance는 약 $18 \omega$으로 온도에 무관하게 일정한 값을 나타내었다. 접합형태를 이용하여 감도(transfer function, dV/$d\Phi$)가 약 $22\mu$V/$\Phi_{0}$인 dc-SQUID센서를 제작하였으며, in-situ SIS ramp edge 형태의 접합이 센서로의 응용가능성을 충분히 가지고 있음을 보여 주었다. In this study, we have fabricated in-situ multilayer $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$/$SrTiO_{3}$/$YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ ramp edge type junctions by using a metal mask and pulsed laser deposition method and studied the junction properties. The junctions showed RSJ-like I-V characteristics. The normal state junction resistance R, of $18 \omega$ was nearly constant with temperature. The dc-SQUID sensors fabricated with the junctions show a sensitivity that transfer function dV/$d\Phi$)~$22\mu$V/$\Phi_{0}$, indicating that the in-situ ramp edge type junction is potentially useful for sensor application.

      • 클러스터형 VOD서버에서 고가용성을 고려한 자체 복구 시스템

        While clustered VOD (Video On Demand) servers that have been proposed for building large-scale VOD system recently, have the advantages of high availability and scalability, the system level reliability of the clustered VOD servers could be decreased by adding more servers to scale up the capacity of the server. To alleviate this reliability problem and support server-level fault tolerance, this paper proposes and analyzes self recovery system based on RAID-3 and 4 with pipelining concept. The proposed self recovery system could increase the efficiency of the disk by accessing the disk with large size block as in RAID-4. The network resource could be used efficiently and the workload of memory could be decreased by sending data in small size block as in RAID-3. By introducing pipeline concept, the recovery tasks are processed at several nodes in parallel so that the workload in CPU, network, and memory could be distributed to several nodes.

      • Effect of In-row Plant Spacing on Growth and Yield of Korean Native Allium wakegi Araki

        Allium wakegi Araki was grown at plant spacings of 5, 10, 15, and 20 cm to determine the effect of planting density on the growth and yield. Allium wakegi Araki plants grown at the 5 cm plant spacing had the lowest bulb diameter and bulb weight, while plants at the lowest density (20 cm spacing) had the highest bulb diameter, bulb number, bulb weight and fresh weight. In general, plants grown at narrower spacings produced significantly smaller bulb diameter and bulb weight, but resulted in the highest yields and plants per hectare and lower fresh weights per plant.
