Long term occupational exposure to solvent mixtures may cause adverse effects to the central nervous system with neurobehavioral symptoms. And some organic slovents have been suggested to cause impairment of tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic activity and neurochemical mechanisms controlling pituitary secretion. For the purpose of assessing neuroendocrine effects in occupational solvents exposure, hormonal study settings (shoes-manufacturing industry & fishing products industry) and compared with nonexposed controls(33 men, 85 women). Male workers exposed to solvent mixtures had significantly lower plasma level of follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) than nonexposed male controls. While female workers exposed to solvent mixtures had significantly lower plasma levels of growth hormone(GH), and thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) than nonexposed female controls. The results of significant decrease in plasma concentrations of pituitary hormones(FSH, GH, and TSH) in workers exposed solvent mixtures indicate that occupational exposure to solvent mixtures may induce neuroendocrine effects through an effect on hypothalamic pituitary axis.
Self-collimation of Ultrasonic Waves in a Two-dimensional Prism-shaped Phononic Crystal

The self-collimation of ultrasonic waves in a two-dimensional prism-shaped phononic crystal (PC) with a square lattice immersed in water was theoretically and experimentally investigated. The acoustic pressure fields at the frequencies of the first and the second pass bands were calculated with and without the PC in the acoustic path by using the finite element method. The normalized pressure distributions of the ultrasonic waves transmitted through water only and through the PC were theoretically and experimentally obtained along the direction perpendicular to the beam axis. We demonstrated self-collimation and directivity enhancement of the ultrasonic waves in the two-dimensional prism-shaped PC.
Acoustic band gaps due to diffraction modes in two-dimensional phononic crystals

<P>In this study, we experimentally and theoretically investigated acoustic band gap control with diffraction modes in two-dimensional (2D) phononic crystals (PCs) consisting of periodic arrays of stainless steel (SS) rods immersed in water. We could classify the acoustic band gaps into two types with diffraction modes in the reflection region, and control the center frequencies of the band gaps by varying the vertical lattice constants. Pressure transmission coefficients and acoustic pressure fields were calculated using the finite element method (FEM), to classify and control the acoustic band gaps. As the vertical lattice constants were varied, the center frequencies of the band gaps, where only normal reflection occurred, were almost constant while those of the band gaps, where additional reflected waves with different propagation directions occurred, decreased with increasing the vertical lattice constants. 청소년의 환경 의식과 태도에 관한 국제 비교 연구 : 한국과 호주를 중심으로 Korea and Australia

We handed out questionaires to some high school students in order to find out the Environmental Consciousness, Knowledge, Values, and Attitudes of young people in Korea. The difference in such things of high school students between Korea and Australia was analyzed by comparison with aech other. It is revealed that the Environmental Knowledge of high school students in Korea is valued significantly high degree in most cases from this study. It is, however, not due to their Environment-Friendly Attitudes and besides the Environmental Terms are hardly understood to most of them. The Environmental concerns of young people in Korea and their view on the importance of Environment, which are not in accordance with those of young people in Australia on most issues, must have been mainly affected by differences in society, economy, education, and cultural background between the two countries.
Pharmaceutical Evaluation of Genistein-loaded Pluronic Micelles for Oral Delivery

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether Pluronic F127 polymeric micelles could improve the oral bioavailability of a poor water-soluble drug, such as genistein. Genistein is a phytoestrogen that has estrogenic activity. F127 triblock copolymer consists of $PEO_{100}-PPO_{65}-PEO_{100}$. Genistein was incorporated in the Pluronic F127 polymeric micelles by a solid dispersion method. The genistein release of genistein-loaded polymeric micelles was studied in vitro (in pH 1.2 and pH 6.8). And the oral bioavailabilities of genistein powder and genisteinloaded micelles were estimated at a dose of 4.0 mg/kg as genistein in rats. Drug loading amount and drug loading efficiency were 11.18% and 97.41%, respectively. The average size of the genistein-loaded polymeric micelles was 27.76 nm. And genistein release of the genistein-loaded polymeric micelles in vitro was 58% (pH 1.2) and 82% (pH 6.8). The bioavailability of genistein-loaded polymeric micelles was better than genistein powder. Consequently, Pluronic F127 polymeric micelles are an effective delivery system for the oral administration of genistein.

We investigated the optimal condition for the production of extracellular protease(a cuticle-degrading protease) from entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana(ATCC7159) in liquid medium by adding of gelatin, bovine serum albumin(BSA), casein and polypeptone. The optimal induction medium for production of extracellular proteases is composed of 0.5% polypeptone, trace elements and 50 mM potassium phosphate(pH 6.0). In this condition, the production of extracellular proteases increased rapidly after the 24hrs, peaking at the third day and there was little inductive effect in culture broth more than pH 7.0. The proteases were inhibited by phenyl methyl sulfonyl fluoride(PMSF). High activity of protease was showed both range of pH 8.5 and 11.5 and also detected by three different portions of slice gel derived from nondenaturing isoelectricfocusing gel. At least three different extracellular proteases are produced in optimal production medium when polypeptone is used as the sole carbon and nitrogen source.
