Purpose: To compare the protective effects of saponin and non-saponin Sun-ginseng extract fractions in a selenite-induced rat cataract model. Methods: A total of 101 Sprague-Dawley rat pups were divided into four groups by treatment: Sun-ginseng, saponin fraction, non-saponin fraction, and control. For induction of cataracts, sodium selenite 15 nmol/g was injected subcutaneously in 13 day-old rat pups. Sun-ginseng extract 100 μg/g (Group I, Ginseng Science, Seoul, Korea), saponin fraction 100 μg/g (Group II), non-saponin fraction 100 μg/g (Group III), and phosphate buffered saline (Control group) were injected intraperitoneally every two days for a total of seven injections. The rats were sacrified and their lenses were dissected and photographed at day 7 and 14, and the cataracts were graded according to the ratio of the cataract area to the total lens area. The blind method was used for the evaluation of the cataract area. Results: At day 14, cataract formation rates (CFR) were 33.3% in group I, 76.4% in group II, 41.2% in group III, and 77.7% in the control group. The mean cataract area (MCA) was 13.4±20.8% in group I, 14.4±11.7% in group II, 5.7±7.7% in group III, and 15.8±12.1% in the control group. Group III showed statistically significant results compared with those of control group (CFR p=0.001, MCA p=0.001). We observed significantly lower incidence and smaller mean cataract area in Group I and Group III at day 7 compared with the control group (Group I, CFR p=0.018; Group III, CFR p=0.032, MCA p=0.005). Conclusions: The protective effects of Sun-ginseng extract are caused by the components in the non-saponin fraction, not by those in the saponin fraction, in a selenite-induced cataract rat model. The velopharyngeal incompetence in children of repaired cleft palate can occur as a multifocus of inappropriate operative time and method, poor operative technique, postoperative complication, insufficient postoperative speech therapy and their combined factors. The hypernasality and articulation disturbance in repaired cleft palate are important factors to judge secondary surgical procedures, but we cannot say that these primary and secondary precipitating components should be essential factors to surgery. So authors carried out endoscopic and aerodynamic examination to 83 children with hypernasality and articulation disturbance following cleft palate surgery. The results are as follows ; 1) Among these 83 subjects of repaired cleft palate with hypernasality and articulation disturbance, 76 cases showed actually velopharyngeal incompetency, but not in 7 cases during connected speech. 2) The velopharyngeal incompetencies classified into 3 level depend on the portal gap : 21 cases in mild, moderate in 31 and severe in 18, this classification does not have strict significance upon the aspect of the surgical indication to each level. 3) On the relationship between OBPR and portal gap, the higher rate showed the smaller gap in mild group but no relation in moderate and severe group. 4) The majority of cases who had surgery before 3 years old revealed smaller gap than later age.

Purpose

To evaluate the efficacy of photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) with the 120 W Greenlight high performance system (HPS) laser for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP).

Materials and Methods

This study was conducted on 389 BPH patients who underwent PVP with the 120 W HPS laser from April 2009 to August 2011. The patients were divided into groups according to IPP: group I was defined as IPP of 0 to 5 mm (n=216), group II as IPP of 5 to 10 mm (n=135), and group III as IPP above 10 mm (n=38). Prostate volume, prostate-specific antigen, International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), maximal urinary flow rate (Qmax), and postvoid residual volume (PVR) were assessed and checked at postoperative 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.

Results

There was a significant difference in the mean prostate size in each group (p<0.05). The preoperative total IPSS score, IPSS voiding symptom score, and quality of life score were not significantly different. However, the IPSS storage symptom score was significantly different between groups 1 and 2 and group 3. IPSS scores, Qmax, and PVR at postoperative 1, 3, 6, and 12 months showed significant improvement compared with preoperative values.

Conclusions

The degree of IPP can affect storage symptoms. However, there is no significant correlation between the degree of IPP and postoperative results. Also, the degree of IPP does not affect short- and long-term PVP results. Proper elimination of bladder outlet obstruction is important for symptomatic relief.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-producing strains were isolated from four edible insects and subjected to 16S rRNA sequence analysis. Among the four GABA-producing bacteria, Enterococcus avium JS-N6B4 exhibited the highest GABA-production, while cultivation temperature, initial pH, aerobic condition, and mono-sodium glutamate (MSG) feeding were found to be the key factors affecting GABA production rate. The culture condition was optimized in terms of glucose, yeast extract, and MSG concentrations using response surface methodology (RSM). GABA production up to 16.64 g/l was obtained under the conditions of 7 g/l glucose, 45 g/l yeast extract, and 62 g/l MSG through the optimization of medium composition by RSM. Experimental GABA production was 13.68 g/l, which was close to the predicted value (16.64 g/l) calculated from the analysis of variance, and 2.79-fold higher than the production achieved with basic medium. Therefore, GABA-producing strains may help improve the GABA production in edible insects, and provide a new approach to the use of edible insects as effective food biomaterials.

In 2012, the NIBR started publishing the Journal of Species Research (JSR) as an international specialized journal of biological taxonomy focusing on taxonomic research. JSR Volume 5 Number 3, to be published in October 2016, has been planned as a 'Special Edition on New and Unrecorded Species of Invertebrates in Korea', and so it consists of the reports of 149 new and unrecorded invertebrate species (including protozoa) discovered in Korea. In future, the JSR should further accelerate the use of such methods to generate valid data for new species and effectively support the compilation of 'National List of Species of Korea'. In this way, it will contribute significantly to enrich for biodiversity in Korea.
