        Evaluation for Impacts of Nitrogen Source to Groundwater Quality in Livestock Farming Area

        We investigated 52 livestock farming complexes in Gyeong-Gi and Incheon provinces based on low, medium, and high livestock density and groundwater quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate a relationship between nitrate N concentration in groundwater and animal factors, such as livestock density and animal species. 2,200 groundwater samples for 3 years from 2012 to 2014 at Gyeong-Gi and Incheon provinces were collected and analyzed for pH, EC, DO, ORP, temperature, major anions and cations, such as NO₃-N, HCO₃<SUP>-</SUP>, PO₄<SUP>-</SUP>, SO₄<SUP>2-</SUP>, Cl<SUP>-</SUP>, NH₄-N, K<SUP>+</SUP>, Na<SUP>+</SUP>, Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>, Mg<SUP>2+</SUP>, T-N, and TOC. Average concentration of total N for generated load density was 23,973 g day<SUP>-1</SUP> km<SUP>-2</SUP> for cattle, 51,551 g day<SUP>-1</SUP> km<SUP>-2</SUP> for pig, and 52,100 g day<SUP>-1</SUP> km<SUP>-2</SUP> for poultry. For animal feeding species, average ratio for generated load over discharge load was 16.1% for cattle, 7.8% for pig, and 7.1% for poultry. Therefore, cattle feeding region is highly vulnerable for water pollution compared to pig and poultry feeding areas. The concentrations of chloride, nitrate, and total N in the groundwater samples were higher at high animal farming regions than other regions. The average concentration of nitrate, and chloride in groundwater samples was 5.0 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP>, 16.6 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> for low livestock density, 6.9 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP>, 17.7 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> for medium livestock density and 7.6 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP>, 22.7 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> for high livestock density and total nitrogen (T-N) was 7.7 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> for low livestock density, 9.4 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> for medium livestock density, 10.7 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> for high livestock density. In conclusion, based on this research, for managing groundwater quality near livestock farming regions, Ca-(Cl+NO₃) group from the Piper diagram is more efficient than using 19 factors for water quality standard.

        Isolation of Megastigmane Sesquiterpenes from the Silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) Droppings and Their Promotion Activity on HO-1 and SIRT1

        The silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) droppings were extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH, and the concentrated extract was partitioned in succession with EtOAc, n-BuOH, and H_2O. From the EtOAc fraction, five megastigmane sesquiterpenes were isolated through repeated silica gel and ODS column chromatography. According to the results of spectroscopic data, such as NMR, MS, and IR, the chemical structures of the isolated compounds were determined as (3S,5R,8R)-3,5-dihydroxymegastigma-6,7-dien-9-one (1), (S)-dehydrovomifoliol (2), (6R,7E,9R)-9-hydroxy-4,7-megastigmadien-3-one (3), (3S,5R,6S,7E)-3,5,6-trihydroxy-7-megastigmen-9-one (4), (6R,9R)-9-hydroxy-4-megastigmen-3-one (5). Compounds 2 through 5 were isolated for the first time from silkworm droppings. GC/MS analysis indicated silkworm powder contained compound 3, and mulberry leaves contained compound 4. Compounds 1 and 5 increased the expression of heme oxygenase-1 and SIRT1 in HepG2 and HEK239 cells, respectively. Heme oxygenase-1 is considered to be an antioxidant enzyme that catabolizes heme to carbon monoxide, free iron and biliverdin, while SIRT1 is the mammalian homologue of the yeast silent information regulator (Sir)-2, which are involved in the suppression of inflammatory mediators or factors that may be used to improve atopy-related symptoms.

        This paper proposes a new degradation diagnosis method of secondary battery in order to improve a battery economy. In the proposed method, a bad cell is detected by the measurement of DC internal resistance and the battery capacity is estimated by the electric discharge test in a short period of time, which can be used to determine the time to replace the battery. Through the computer simulation and actual experimentation, the proposed method's validity is confirmed by comparing and analyzing the performance. As a result, we show that it is possible to estimate the accurate capacity of secondary battery in a short space of time.

      • 65세 이상 외래 방문환자를 대상으로 한 심전도 소견

        The electrocardiogram is one of the most widely used diagnostic tools. Especially it is useful to the patients who have cardiovascular disease. Because elderly population are the fastest growing component of national population, I analyzed the frequencies of specific electrocardiogram findings in patients aged 65 years and older living in Gyeong-ju to collecting ECG data. Sinus bradycardia (17.0%) and Left ventricular hypertrophy (25.2%), QT prolongation (30.9%) were the most common abnormalities found in the population as a whole. Left-axis deviation (11.6% vs. 3.1%, p = 0.001) and right bundle branch block (11.9% vs. 4.1%, p= 0.001) were more common in men than women. First-atrioventricular block (2.2% vs. 5.5%, p = 0.025) and T wave abnormalities (4.1% vs. 13.2%, p = 0.001), left ventricular hypertrophy (21.6% vs. 28.0%, p = 0.049) were more common in women. QT prolongation were more common in 75 years and older (26.7% vs. 38.1%, p = 0.001). Left-axis deviation (9.4% vs. 3.9%, p = 0.024) and Right bundle branch blocks (9.8% vs. 3.0%, p = 0.003) were more common in men aged 65~74 years. Left ventricular hypertrophy (20.9% vs. 30.0%, p = 0.025) and T wave abnormalities (4.3% vs. 12.2%, p = 0.002) were more common in women aged 65~74 years. Atrial fibrillation (7.1% vs. 1.1%, p = 0.013) and left-axis deviation 17.6% vs. 2.1%, p = 0.001), Right bundle branch block (17.6% vs. 5.3%, p = 0.001) were more common in men aged 75 years and older. First-atrioventricular block (0% vs. 5.9%, p = 0.020) and T wave abnormalities (3.5% vs. 14.4%, p = 0.008) were more common in women aged 75 years and older. In conclusion, Left ventricular hypertrophy and sinus bradycardia, QT prolongation were most common electrocardiographic findings in as a whole. Left-axis deviation and right bundle branch block, fist-atrioventricular block, T wave abnormalities, QT prolongation were significantly different in age and gender. 심전도는 전 세계적으로 가장 널리 사용되는 진단적 도구로서, 특히 심혈관계 질환이 있는 환자에게 그 유용성이 크다. 현대 사회는 고령화 사회로 노인 인구에 대한 사회적, 의학적 관심이 높다. 이에 본 연구자는 노인 인구에 대한 심전도 자료를 수집하기 위해 동국대 경주 병원 외래 진료실을 방문한 65세 이상 노인 환자 737명을 대상으로 심전도 검사를 시행하였다. 좌심실 비대(25.2%), QT 간격 연장(30.9%)과 동성 서맥(17.0%)을 보인 경우가 가장 많았고, 좌축 편위 (11.6% vs. 3.1%, p = 0.001), 우각 차단(11.9% vs. 4.1%, p = 0.001)의 경우 여자 환자보다 남자 환자에서 빈도가 높았고, 1도 방실 차단(2.2% vs. 5.5%, p = 0.025)과 비정상적인 T파 양상(4.1% vs. 13.2%, p = 0.001), 좌심실 비대(21.6% vs. 28.0%, p = 0.049)의 경우 남자 환자보다 여자 환자에서 빈도가 높았다. 75세 이상 환자 군에서 QT 간격 연장(26.7% vs. 38.1%, p = 0.001)이 65세에서 74세 사이 환자 군에 비해 빈도가 높은 것 외에 유의한 차이는 없었다. 결론적으로 고령 환자에서 비정상적인 심전도 소견으로 좌심실 비대와 QT 간격 연장, 동성 서맥의 빈도가 높았으며 좌축 편위, 우각 차단, 1도 방실 차단 등은 성별, 연령대별로 유의한 차이가 있었다.

        A high-density array of size-controlled silicon nanodots in a silicon oxide nanowire by electron-stimulated oxygen expulsion.

        <P>Methods of producing Si nanodots embedded in films of silicon oxide and silicon nitride abound, but fabrication of Si nanodots in a nanowire of these materials is very rare despite the fact that nanowire architecture enhances the charge collection and transport efficiencies for solar cells and field-effect transistors. We report a novel fabrication method for a high-density array of size-controlled sillicon nanodots from a silicon oxide nanowire using electron-beam irradiation. Our results demonstrate that a highly dense phase of Si nanodots with a narrow size distribution can be made from a silicon oxide nanowire with a core-shell structure of crystalline silicon-rich oxide (c-SRO)/amorphous silicon oxide (a-SiO(2)). This new nanomaterial shows the carrier transport characteristics of a semiconductor. The initially produced amorphous Si nanodots can be readily turned into crystalline Si (c-Si) nanodots by thermal annealing. Key characteristics of c-Si nanodots such as their size, number density, and rate of nucleation and growth are easily controlled by varying the electron radiation dose and annealing temperature. Nanodot formation is mechanistically initiated by electron trapping at the c-SRO core as well as at the core-shell interface, which leads to out-diffusion of the negatively charged oxygen through Coulomb repulsion, fostering the aggregation of Si atoms.</P>

      • The Analysis of Relationship Between Environmental Statistics Data and Tuberculosis Patients: A Case Study

        The Ministry of Environment established a data base platform called environmental statistic portal. From there we collected environmental statistics including sulfurous acid gas, fine dust, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, household waste, domestic waste, construction waste, the number of factories, the amount of waste water, the amount of organic matter, etc. We collected the number of tuberculosis (TB) patients from National Health Service in Korean Statistical Information Service. We consider the number of TB patients and environmental statistics as a dependent variable and predictors, respectively. A multiple regression analysis is performed to find out significant predictors that affect the number of TB patients. A deep analysis is done to discover the relationship between significant predictors and the dependent variable depending on national district areas, i.e. Gu or Goon, by use of a multivariate analysis and a covariance analysis.
