Monopoly Pricing of Congestible Resources with Incomplete Information
한종희 한양대학교 경제연구소 2007 JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC RESEARCH Vol.12 No.2
This paper discusses monopoly pricing in a market with congestion-type negative externalities. Two broad classes of situations are considered: communications network congestion for the case of profit maximization and road congestion for the case of welfare maximization. We allow the firm to screen consumers with different preferences using a nonlinear tariff, which has been largely neglected in the previous literature. It turns out that the level of overall congestion in the market is too low due to incomplete information for all types of consumers. Also, it is shown that the production technology of congestible resources has a crucial impact on the firm's cost-recoverability.
Leasing versus selling: marketing strategy choice in durable goods oligopolies
한종희,김상현 한국계량경제학회 2007 계량경제학보 Vol.18 No.4
This paper examines firms' strategic choice between leasing and selling in a market for horizontally differentiated durable goods. We show that firms' decisions on marketing strategy may lead to socially inefficient outcomes: firms choose leasing even though direct sales are socially more desirable. Moreover, a prisoners' dilemma situation may arise: firms choose leasing while they could be better off by selling together. We also discuss on the impact of the advance of information infrastructure on the marketing practice in software markets.
R&D Technology Choice in Durable Goods Monopoly
한종희,Seongmin Kim 한국계량경제학회 2013 계량경제학보 Vol.24 No.2
This paper examines a durable-good monopolist’s R&D decision in new product development. We show that the monopolist without commitment faces a time inconsistency problem concerning the choice of research technology, and as a result ends up choosing a safer research project and investing less than the commitment solution. This implies more frequent but smaller quality improvements in durable-good markets. It is shown that the time inconsistency problem in fact serves to increase social welfare by inducing the firm to choose a socially optimal research project.
The Competitive Effect of Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices on Processed Food Products in Korea
한종희,정진욱,김혜원 연세대학교 동서문제연구원 2015 동서연구 Vol.27 No.2
This paper empirically tests the effect of the practice of manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (SRPs) has on retail prices in processed food markets in Korea. In July 2010, the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) banned SRP for four categories of processed food products, but a year later permitted the practice again after experiencing price soars. We construct a system of reduced-form price equations for biscuit, snack food, chocolate pie, ice-cream and ice-cream cone, and test the price effect of the policy shift. It is found that banning SRPs tends to significantly decrease the relevant retail prices.
