1. Objectives The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Sasang constitutional medical diagnosis and treatment on Taeumin's Hangueol syndrome, probably caused by Iatrogenic Adrenal Insufficiency. 2. Methods The subject is a 75 years old woman who has a severe chilling symptom without fever, probably caused by Iatrogenic Adrenal Insufficiency, and we had diagnosed her syndrome as Taeumin's Hangueol syndrome and prescribed Sasang Constitutional Medicine. 3. Results The scale of chilling symptom has been reduced. 4. Conclusions This case study shows an effcient results by using Sasang Constitutional Medicine in treatment of Taeumin's chilling syndrome.

1. Objectives Hiccup is one of common symptoms clinically and caused by various etiologies. Persistent hiccup is defined as hiccup lasting more than 48 hours. We have tried researching effect of herbal medicines(Dokhwaljihwang-tang, Yangkyuksanhwa-tang). 2. Methods To heal the persistent hiccup, we used Dokhwaljihwang-tang and Yangkyuksanhwa-tang. 3. Results A Soyangin patient diagnosed to have persistent hiccup was, treated with Soyangin herbal medicines (Dokhwaljihwang-tang and Yangkyuksanhwa-tang), and change of his symptom & general condition was managed. 4. Conclusions The constitutional treatment with Soyangin herbal medicines(Dokhwaljihwang-tang, Yangkyuksanhwa-tang) may have an effect on management of persistent hiccup. Further study on management of this disease is needed.

1. Objectives Hyperemesis Gravidarum is one of common symptoms clinically and caused by pregnancy. This is defined as vomiting sufficiently pernicious to produce weight loss, dehydration, acid-base imbalance. In severe case, it also leads to neurologic abnormality including confusion, gate disturbance, nystagmus. We have tried researching effect of herbal medicines, Soyangin Hyungbangsabaek-san. 2. Methods To heal the Hyperemesis Gravidarum, we used Soyangin Hyungbangsabaek-san. 3. Results Hyperemesis Gravidarum of a Soyangin patient was treated with a herb-medicine, and change of her subjective symptom & general condition was managed. 4. Conclusions The constitutional treatment with herb-medicine (Soyangin Hyungbangsabaek-san) was efficacious against Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Further study on management of this disease is needed.

Ssanghwatang (SHT) has been known to prove effective in the treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED), and its modified formula is widely used in clinical practice. However, its fundamental mechanism of action is not clearly known. It is well known that endothelial cells can achieve the relaxation of vascular smooth muscles by the release of nitric oxide (NO). NO is synthesized by the enzyme NO synthase (NOS) from L-arginine and oxygen. It is widely accepted that NO plays an important role in the relaxation of corpus cavernous smooth muscle and vasculature. In addition, in terms of the penile erection, the NO/cGMP pathway is more potent than the PGE1 /cAMP pathway. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the mechanism of the erectile effects of SHT by focusing on its direct effects on corpus cavernous smooth muscle cells. We investigated the NOS activity, nitrite concentration and cGMP levels in rat corpus cavernous smooth muscle cell lines activated by SHT extracts. Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of SHT extracts on penile smooth muscle relaxation following oral administration of SHT extract powder to rats by the dosage of 1 g/kg over fifteen days. As a result, we found that SHT stimulated NO release. NOS activity and cGMP levels were increased by SHT respectively. Furthermore, SHT relaxed the corpus cavernous smooth muscle. These results are consistent with the concept that penile erection by SHT is carried out through the NO/cGMP pathway. In conclusion, the present study shows that SHT increases the NOS activity, synthesizes NO and augments the cGMP, which mediates penile erection. Further determination of the SHT mechanism related with the NO/cGMP pathway strongly indicates that SHT can be used as a remedy for erectile impotence. 자기 공명 영상의 고신호 구역에 관한 오공약침 치료의 임상적 연구

Objective : This study was designed to find out the effect of scolopendrid aquacupuncture on low back pain with or without sciatica showing high intensity zone of magnetic resonance imaging. Methods : The 30 patients who had a diagnosis of high intensity zone by lumbar-MRI and admitted to Gwangju oriental medical hospital in wonkwang university from January 2005 to August 2004 were observed. The symptom of inpatients is low back pain with or without sciatica. We treated 30 patients by scolopendrid aquacupuncture besides the general conservative treatment of oriental medicine. Results and Conclusion : The scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment led to improvement in the pain and symptom of disability as determined by all efficacy measures. After scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment, there was improvement in VAS, ROM and SLRT. This results suggest that scolopendrid aquacupuncture is good method for treatment of low back pain with or without sciatica showing high intensity zone of magnetic resonance imaging.

Results and Conclusions Most of Herbs for the Soeumin were processed for filling up BoMyungGiJu(保命之主).
The Effect of Yangkyuk-Sanhwa-Tang on Cytokine Production in the Patients with Cerebral Infarction

Yangkyuk-Sanhwa-Tang(YST) has been widely used as a formula for the Soyangin cerebral infarction (CI) patients according to Sasang constitutional philosophy. Brain cells produce cytokines and chemokines during the inflammatory process after stroke both in animal models and in patients. Previously, regulation of serum cytokine levels by YSThas been observed in individuals at the acute stage of CI disease, but there have not been other scientific investigations on YST. The author investigated the effect of YST on theproduction of various cytokines using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)from the Soyangin (CI) patients, and Soyangin normal group. The cytokine production was analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The amount of interleukin (IL)-1, IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- in culture supernatant significantly increased in the LPS-treated cells compared with unstimulated-cells (P < 0.05). However, in LPS-stimulated PBMCs, cytokines level in CI patients group was higher than that of normal group. YST (1 mg/ml) significantly inhibited IL-1, IL-1, and IL-8 production in PBMCs stimulated with LPS (about 85% for IL-1, 87% for IL-1, and 53% for IL-8, P < 0.05), but did not significantly inhibit IL-6 and TNF- production in the CI patients group. We also show that YST significantly increased LPS-induced IL-1, IL-6, and TNF- production in the normal group. Thesedata suggest that YST has a regulatoryeffect on the cytokine production, which might explain its beneficial effect in the treatment of CI.
