Development of Microbial Fuel Cells Using Proteus vulgaris

Microbial fuel cells comprising the microorganism P. vulgaris, thionin as a mediator, and various mono- and disaccharides in an anodic compartment have been developed. A cathodic compartment containing a Pt electrode and Fe$(CN)_6^{3-}$ was separated from an anode by the Nafion membrane. From absorbance-time measurements, it was found that the absorbance of thionin was not altered by the addition of P. vulgaris, even in the presence of sugars. However, thionin was effectively reduced when P. vulgaris was present. These results differ substantially from the case of safranine O, a phenazine-derivative, indicating that thionin takes up electrons during the metabolic oxidation processes of carbohydrates. Maximum fuel cell efficiency was observed at 37 $^{\circ}C$, optimum temperature for the growth of P. vulgaris, and 0.5 V cell voltage was obtained, which indicates that the metabolism of the microorganism directly affects the efficiency. Thionin concentration was closely related to cell performance. When the charging-discharging characteristics were tested with glucose, galactose, sucrose, maltose, and trehalose as carbon sources, galactose was found to give the highest coulombic efficiency. Cell performance was almost fully recovered with only small degradation when glucose and sucrose were used in the repetitive operation. Current was maintained nearly twice as long for sucrose than in the case of glucose.

In compliance with the Ministry of Environment’s Asbestos Safety Management Act (enforced on 4. 28. 2012), the building owners are required to carry out asbestos building survey. Depending on the results of the surveys, the owners of such buildings need to implement necessary measures such as repairs, sealing, or closure of the relevant areas. In this study, a test for asbestos scattering limit on asbestos head lining and scattering tests before and after applying a scattering inhibitor on a subject target were implemented. The result of the asbestos scattering limit test confirmed the possibility of asbestos scattering on both the front and back side of the interior material. Tests regarding the efficiency of the scattering inhibitor showed that in the absence of the scattering inhibitor, the detected asbestos concentration exceeded the limit prescribed as per the indoor air quality guidelines; however, with the application of two types of scattering inhibitors, the asbestos concentration in the indoor air was less than the prescribed limit. These results confirmed that the asbestos scattering inhibitor is effective in suppressing the spattering of asbestos; however, it will be necessary to have regulatory controls such as the obligatory use of scattering inhibitor after development of which can prevent all asbestos scattering inhibitor. The results of this study are expected to be utilized as base data for both the maintenance and development of various management programs aimed at an effective maintenance of asbestos building material.

1) 목적(Objectives):The warm needle acupuncture techniques (WNAT) combines the acupuncture effects and heat generated by moxibustion. Although stainless steel needles have been used empirically for WNAT, stainless steel needle has extremely low thermal conductivity and may not deliver designable heat to acupuncture points. The present study compared thermal conductivity of several types of needles made from iron, silver or stainless steel and developed a method enhancing thermal conduction in stainless needle. 2) 방법(Methods):We measured temperatures reaching at 1cm or 2.5 cm from moxa using a digital thermometer (DT-3891F, CEM, Shenzhen, China). and the types of iron, silver or stainless steel needles were compared. Effects of insulation paints on thermal conduction of stainless steel needles were also explored. 3) 결과(Results) 및 결론(Conclusions):Silver needle and traditional needle showed high thermal conductivity while marked heat loss was seen in stainless steel needles. Objectives:This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the quality of life(QOL) of community-dwelling elderly with cognitive impairment Methods:This was a community-based, cross-sectional study that included 490 elderly subjects aged ≥60 years. Subjects completed a questionnaire that encompassed sociodemographic characteristics, health behavior, and chronic medical illness. Korean MMSE in the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease(CERAD) assessment packet(MMSE-KC), the Korean version of Quality of Life-Alzheimer’s Disease(KQOL-AD) and the Short Form of Geriatric Depression Scale(SGDS) were also evaluated. Cognitive impairment was defined as having a test scores 1.5 SD below MMSE-KC norms adjusted for age, gender, and education. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed to determine factors associated with QOL. Results:The participants were allocated into cognitive impairment group(mean age=73.07, N=127) and no cognitive impairment group(mean age=72.51, N=363). The mean score for self-rated KQOL-AD was 26.45 in the former and 28.62 in the latter. The SGDS score(β=−0.741, p<0.001) was significantly associated with QOL in the former. SGDS score(β=−0.711, p<0.001), education(β=0.136, p<0.001), and living conditions(β=0.117, p=0.001) were factors significantly associated with QOL in the latter. Conclusion:Self-rated symptoms of depression were significantly associated with QOL in both groups of community- dwelling elderly. Thus, appropriate psychiatric management of depression in elderly is needed to enhance QOL.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of wall-squat with short-foot exercise on pain, dysfunction, and pelvic alignment in chronic low back pain patients. METHODS: Thirty outpatients diagnosed with chronic low back pain and pronated foot were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided randomly into a wall-squat with short-foot exercise group (WS; n = 15) and a normal wall-squat exercise group (NW; n = 15). These groups performed their respective exercises 15 times, for three sets, three times a week over six weeks. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to measure the subjects’ pain, and the Roland-Morris disability questionnaire (RMDQ) was used to measure the subjects’ dysfunction. A navicular drop test (NDT) was used to measure the subjects’ arch height. To assess the patients’ pelvic alignment, their lordosis, sacral tilt, lumbar width, sacral width, ilium length, and ilium width were measured by X-ray imaging. RESULTS: Both the WS and NW groups exhibited significant decreases in their VAS and RMDQ scores after exercise (p < .05). The WS group exhibited significant increases in their arch height (p < .05). Significant differences in the VAS, sacral tilt, sacral width, and ilium length were observed between the WS and NW groups (p < .05). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that wall-squat exercise is effective in decreasing the level of pain and dysfunction in chronic low back pain patients. In addition, the wall-squat with short-foot exercise is considered more effective in improving the pelvic alignment than without short-foot exercise. This can be an effective method for the non-pharmacological and non-surgical treatment of chronic low back pain
