Peri-implantitis (PI) is bacteria-induced inflammatory condition which affects the alveolar bone and soft tissue around implants and may result in the loss of supporting bone. Attenuation of the P. gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory response can be a new therapeutic approach in the treatment of PI. This study was conducted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of 635-nm light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation over MG63 osteoblast-like cell. Scratch was made on MG63 cells with or without LPS, then 635-nm irradiated. The expression of the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) proteins was evaluated with western blot. The production of the prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and expression of the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) was measured with enzyme-linked immunoassay, and the cytokine profile was evaluated with the human inflammation antibody array. Wound closure effect presented in the cells treated with LPS was observed more significantly in the cells with 635-nm irradiation than the cells without irradiation. The 635-nm irradiaiton reduced LPS-induced expression of the COX-2 and production of the PGE2. Also, 635-nm irradiation affect the expression of RANKL, OPG, and proinflammatory cytokines. These results indicate that 635-nm irradiation could reduce the alveolar bone resorption induced by LPS stimulation through the inhibition of COX-2 expression and PGE2 production, the suppression of proinflammatory cytokine, and the modulation of RANKL/OPG balance in MG63 cells.

Topoisomerases are essential enzymes involved in all processes of DNA metabolism, and their inhibitors have been identified as potential anti-cancer agents. The present study examined the effect of linoelaidic acid (C18 polyunsaturated fatty) compounds derived from Gardenia jasminoids Ellis extract on the activity of eukaryotic topoisomerases inhibition. The present study identified linoelaidic acid compounds using open column fraction, HPLC, NMR and LC/MS which have effects on cell death in oral cancer cell line, FaDu, but not in immortalized normal cell line, HaCaT. Subsequent studies revealed linoelaidic acid-induced autophagy through LC3 activation. Finally, its inhibition of topoisomerase I and selectively induction of oral cancer cell death possibly implies that linoelaidic acid can be a role as potenial agents in the prevention and therapy of oral cancer.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising next generation batteries, and numerous porous carbons have been considered as the support materials for sulfur to address dissolution of poylsulfide. However, the weak binding energy of carbon with sulfur species causes poor cycle performance. We report that amine- and hydroxyl-rich biopolymer (chitosan) coated on ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) can effectively capture soluble polysulfide. The strong binding of chitosan’s amine- and hydroxyl-group with the polysulfides prevents dissolution of soluble intermediates and assists dispersion of insulating final products. In addition, as chitosan is insoluble in the electrolyte, chitosan coating on the cathode sustainably increases cycle stability and coulombic efficiency of Li-S batteries. Initial coulombic efficiency of chitosan modified OMC/S composite was 81.7% and specific capacities of chitosan modified OMC/S composite were 32.4% and 51.6% higher than those of bare OMC/S composite at 100th and 140th cycle, respectively.

Primary testicular lymphoma account for 1∼5% of all testicular neoplasms. The majority of these tumors are diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Primary NK/T cell lymphoma of the testis is a rare entity. Regardless of treatment, the majority of these patients have exhibited a highly aggressive clinical course and they have died within 1 year because of early dissemination. We report here on a case of the aggressive ‘nasal type’ natural killer (NK)/T cell lymphoma that initially presented as a testicular tumor. A 63-year-old man presented with painless left testicular swelling, and so a left orchiectomy was performed. A biopsy specimen of the testis revealed an extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma of the nasal type. In-situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus proved positive. The patient received systemic chemotherapy with 3 courses of a combination regimen. (Korean J Hematol 2008;43:276-279.)

Acquired hemophilia is a rare but potentially life-threatening hemorrhagic disorder caused by the development of autoantibodies against coagulation factor VIII. Concentrates of human factor VIII, desmopressin, activated prothrombin complex concentrates, recombinant activated factor VII can all be used to control episodes of acute bleeding. The recent availability of bypassing agents like recombinant activated factor VII has been shown to be clinically safe and effective as treatment for acute bleeding. In this case report, a 67 year-old male patient with Rh negative blood type developed gross hematuria and bleeding after transurethral resection due to prostatic hypertrophy. After vesicocutaneous fistular reduction operation, post-operative bleeding was presented. The acute bleeding was controlled successfully by the combined treatment with recombinant activated factor VII (Novo sevenⓇ) and prednisone.
Surface Charge Modification of Polyethyleneimine for Enhanced Renal Clearance and Bioimaging

Polyethyleneimine (PEI) has emerged as a potentially effective carrier for gene delivery. To overcome the cytotoxicity of PEI in vivo, the biodistribution and clearance of PEI conjugated with near-infrared fluorophores (NIRF) were imaged in mice. To confirm the effect of surface charge on enhanced renal clearance, PEI was conjugated with three different types of NIRF: positively charged PEI-NIRF+, negatively charged PEI-NIRF-, and zwitterionic PEI-NIRF± conjugates, which were intravenously injected into mice. The biodistribution and body clearance were monitored under an NIR fluorescence imaging system at 4 h and 24 h postinjection. All organs and tissues were resected to further compare the distribution of each PEI-NIRF conjugate in two mice at 4 h and 24 h. The results showed that the zwitterionic PEINIRF± conjugate was most rapidly cleared, primarily through the kidneys of the mice within 24 h postinjection. In conclusion, the biodistribution of zwitterionic PEI-NIRF± was found to be significantly different from that of positively and negatively charged PEI-NIRF conjugates with increased renal clearance. Thus, zwitterionic PEI-NIRF± could be a promising gene delivery carrier that can potentially reduce the side effects of conventional cationic polymers such as cytotoxicity and non-specific binding in vivo.
Near-infrared fluorescent sorbitol probe for tumor diagnosis in vivo

This study evaluated the near-infrared (NIR)fluorescent probe Sorbitol-ZW800-1 as tracer for targetedtumor imaging of multiple cancer types. Preliminarily, Sorbitol-ZW800-1 conjugate was validated in vivoon breast (MCF-7) cancer cell lines. Subsequently, the tracer was tested in xenograft mouse models withmalignant breast (MDA-MB-231), lung (NCI-H460), and colorectal (HT-29) tumors, respectively. Importantly, the Sorbitol-ZW800-1 conjugate showed highly selective tumor uptake in various tumormice models. Moreover, biodistribution for 24 h exhibited the significantfluorescence signals in tumorsand kidneys. Therefore, sorbitol is a promising candidate as a potential cancer targeting agent for theaccurate detection of cancer cells.
