2D fluorescence sensors produce a great deal of spectral data during fermentation processes, which can be analyzed using a variety of statistical techniques. Principal component analysis (PCA) and a self-organizing map (SOM) were used to analyze these 2D fluorescence spectra and to extract useful information from them. PCA resulted in scores and loadings that were visualized in the score-loading plots and used to monitor various fermentation processes with recombinant Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The SOM was found to be a useful and interpretative method of classifying the entire gamut of 2D fluorescence spectra and of selecting some significant combinations of excitation and emission wavelengths. The results, including the normalized weights and variances, indicated that the SOM network is capable of being used to interpret the fermentation processes monitored by a 2D fluorescence sensor.

The noise performance of 0.15 m GaAs power metamorphic high electron mobility transistor (MHEMT) devices with a double-doped In0:52Al0:48As/In0:53Ga0:47As structure has been investigated together with the DC and microwave characteristics. The 0.15 100 m2 MHEMT device shows a high gate-to-drain breakdown voltage of ..8.3 V, an extrinsic transconductance of 740 mS/mm, and a threshold voltage of ..0.97 V. The obtained cut-o frequency and maximum frequency of oscillation are 133 GHz and 235 GHz, respectively. A very low minimum noise gure of 1.11 dB and an associated gain of 9.51 dB at 30 GHz are obtained for the power MHEMT with an In content of 53 % in the InGaAs channel. This excellent noise characteristic is attributed to a drastic reduction in the gate resistance by the T-shaped gate with a wide head and to the improved device performance.

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) plays a pivotal role in the turnover of extracellular matrix (ECM) and in the migration of normal and tumor cells in response to normal physiologic and numerous pathologic conditions. Here, we show that the transcription of the MMP-9 gene is induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation in cells of a macrophage lineage (RAW 264.7 cells). We provide evidence that the NF-$\kappa$B binding site of the MMP-9 gene contributes to its expression in the LPS-signaling pathway, since mutation of NF-$\kappa$B binding site of MMP-9 promoter leads to a dramatic reduction in MMP-9 promoter activation. In addition, the degradation of l$\kappa$B$\alpha$;, and the presences of myeloid differentiation protein (MyD88) and tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated kinase 6 (TRAF6) were found to be required for LPS-activated MMP-9 expression. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays showed that functional interaction between NF-$\kappa$B and the MMP-9 promoter element is necessary for LPS-activated MMP-9 induction in RAW 264.7 cells. In conclusion, our observations demonstrate that NF-$\kappa$B contributes to LPS-induced MMP-9 gene expression in a mouse macrophage cell line.

Purpose: To investigate the risk factor for prolonged intensive care units (ICU) stay in Korean. Methods: Data were extracted from V-SKI study (Validation of simplified acute physiology score 3 in Korean intensive care units) from July, 2010 to January, 2011. The data were established by respiratory failure research group including 15 hospitals. Prolonged ICU stay was defined as ICU stay ≥ 14 days. The data included demographic data, SAPS 3, SAPS II, and SOFA score. Results: In A total of 4,060 patents of ICU admission, male was 3,018 (63.9%)and mean age was 59.74±16.54 years. Mean duration of ICU stay was 8.65±17.67 day and patients with prolonged ICU stay were 504 (12.4%). SAPS 3 score was higher in patients with prolonged ICU stay than in patients with short term ICU stay (P<0.001). SAPS II score and SOFA was high in patients with prolonged ICU stay (P<0.001). The ROC of SAPS3 and SAPS II score for prolonged ICU stay were 0.684 (95% CI; 0.660-0.709) and 0.768 (0.746-0.789). Patients with prolonged ICU stay was older age (P<0.001) and had higher frequency of cirrhosis, stroke, COPD, chronic pulmonary failure and metastatic cancer than patients with short term stay (P<0.05). Emergency operation and acute infection were risk for prolonged ICU stay (P<0.001). CPR and mechanical ventilator apply at ICU admission were more frequent in patients with prolonged ICU stay (P<0.001). Conclusion: SAPS 3 score as well as SAPS II may help to predict for prolonged ICU stay. Clinician should have more attention and careful management of patient with high SAPS score.
