Transcriptional regulation of the Schizosaccharomyces pombe y-glutamylcysteine synthetase (GCS) gene was examined using the two GCS-lacZ fusion plasmids pUGCS101 and pUGCS102, which harbor 607 bp and 447 bp upstream regions, respectively. The negatively-acting sequence was located in the -607 - -447 bp upstream region of the GCS gene. The upstream sequence responsible for induction by menadione(MD) and L-buthionine-(S, R)-sulfoximine (BSO) resides in the -607 - -447 bp region, whereas the sequence which codes for nitric oxide induction is located within the -447 bp region, measured from the translational initiation point. Carbon source-dependent regulation of the GCS gene appeared to be dependent on the nucleotide sequence within -447 bp region. The transcription factor Papl is involved in the induction of the GCS gene by MD and BSO, but not by nitric oxide. Induction of the GCS gene occurring due to low glucose concentration does not depend on the presence of Pap1. These data imply that induction by MD and BSO may be mediated by the Pap1 binding site, probably located in the -607 - -447 region, and also that the nitric oxide-mediated regulation of the S. pombe GCS gene may share a similar mechanism with its carbon-dependent induction.

Background: The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on Kawasaki disease (KD) has not yet been established. We investigated changes in the observed number and severity of KD cases and accompanying coronary artery complications during the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea. Methods: This retrospective observational study included patients aged < 18 years with acute-phase KD diagnosed between March 2018 and February 2021. Data were extracted from the Clinical Data Warehouse that houses data from five affiliated university hospitals in Korea. We analyzed changes in the number of patient admissions and clinical characteristics, including cardiac complications, before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: A total of 475 admissions were included in the analysis. After March 2020, we observed a significant decrease of 33% in the number of hospitalizations for KD compared with the average number of hospitalizations during the previous 2 years. The number of admissions per month significantly decreased by 7.9 persons/month (95% confidence interval, −13.8 to −2.0; P < 0.05) compared with that before COVID-19. By contrast, the proportion of patients aged < 1 year with KD increased. The proportion of patients with refractory KD and the rate of cardiac complications did not change significantly. Conclusion: Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the total number of hospital admissions for KD has decreased in Korea. Although the proportion of admissions of infants aged < 1 year increased, no changes were observed in clinical courses and complications.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We present a facile method for designing and manipulating eggshell membrane-based nanowrinkled microfibers (EMNMs) using graphene and a spin-coating technique. Graphene is simply spin-coated on the eggshell membrane to form multiscale structures of nanowrinkled microfibers. We demonstrate that the EMNMs combine the unique properties of the raw eggshell membrane and graphene, such as micro- and nanoscale hierarchical morphologies, specific crystalline structures, and surface wettability. We also show that the properties of the EMNMs can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of graphene.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Nanowrinkled microfibers composed of eggshell membrane and graphene are fabricated. </LI> <LI> The properties of the prepared nanowrinkled microfibers are investigated. </LI> <LI> The microfiber properties can be controlled by adjusting the graphene concentration. </LI> </UL> </P>

In a previous study, a gst gene was isolated from the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. This gene was dubbed gstI, and was characterized using the gstI -lacZ fusion plasmid pYSH2000. In this work, four additional fusion plasmids, pYSHSDl, pYSHSD2, pYSHSD3 and pYSHSD4, were constructed, in order to carry (respectively) 770, 551, 358 and 151 bp upstream regions from the translational initiation point. The sequence responsible for induction by aluminum, mercury and hydrogen peroxide was located in the range between -1,088 and -770 bp upstream of the S. pombe gstI gene. The same region was identified to contain the nucleotide sequence responsible for regulation by Papl, and has one putative Papl binding site, TTACGTAT, located in the range between $-954\~-947$ bp upstream of the gstI gene. Negatively acting sequences are located between -1,088 and -151 bp. These findings imply that the Papl protein is involved in basal and inducible transcription of the gstI gene in the fission yeast S. pombe.

The current guidelines for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of vancomycin suggest a target 24-hour area under the curve (AUC0-24) of 400 to 600 mg*h/L for serious methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. In this study, the predictabilities of acute kidney injury (AKI) of various TDM target parameters, target levels, and sampling methods were evaluated in patients who underwent TDM from January 2020 to December 2020. The AUC0-24 and trough values were calculated by both one- and two-point sampling methods, and were evaluated for the predictability of AKI. Among the AUC0-24 cutoff comparisons, the threshold value of 500 mg*h/L in the two sampling methods was statistically significant (P = 0.042) when evaluated for the predictability of AKI. Analysis by an receiver operating characteristic curve estimated an AUC0-24 cutoff value of 563.45 mg*h/L as a predictor of AKI, and was proposed as the upper limit of TDM target.

With the development of technology, e-learning has already become popular. According to the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (2016), the total number of e-learning business owners is 1,639, while the market size is 3.4876 trillion won, meaning that it increased by about 1.5 trillion won compared to the market size of 1.9 trillion in 2008. The utilization rate is 58.7%, which is increasing every year. Currently, college students who are actively using e-learning are Net Generation. The Net Generation means a generation that has encountered and has been using digital since birth (Topscott, 2008). As the Net Generation is familiar with the computer, they can use e-learning services without any difficulty. In addition, according to Kim et al. (2014), college students' computer self-efficacy and the score for e-learning acceptance attitude appeared to be significantly higher Unlike the Net Generation that has been familiar with computers and the Internet since birth, the middle-aged and older generation aged between 40 and 50 is the generation to learn about digital media in order to adapt to the changed age (Lee et al., 2012). Although the middle-aged and older generation is not familiar with the use of the Internet and computers, the proportion of using e-learning by the middle-aged and older generation is increasing recently. In the 50s, the e-learning use rate is only 37%, but it is also the generation that growth rate is highest when compared with last year. Among the reasons for not using the e-learning in the middle-aged and older generation, 'interested but not aware of how to use it' was ranked #1 as 26.9% and 24.9%, respectively. In addition, future intentions to use the e-learning by users who do not use it among the middle-aged and older generation between 40 and 50 were 67.4% and 75.2%, respectively, showing that many non-users had intentions to use the e-learning in the future (National IT Industry Promotion Agency, 2016). This shows that the interest and demand for the e-learning in the middle-aged and older generation is high, but those who are in the generation are having difficulty accessing it. As the current middle-aged and older generation who was born in the baby boomer generation is getting closer to retirement, it has a great interest in preparing for old age. Especially in the aging society like now, the 50s are the ages that distinguish between 'ambiguous middle age' and 'extended old age' and that are the time to prepare for life in old age, and the intention of reemployment of the middle-aged and older generation for the preparation of the later years is gradually increasing. In the case of the middle-aged and older generation who is currently looking for re-first because there is not enough old-age income (Kang, 2016). In addition, subsequent re-employment is mainly done in small micro business, skill-related work, and simple labor. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for the preparation for the re-employment as a civil servant who is available to prepare for his/her old age. However, compared to the younger generations in their 20s and 30s, the middle-aged and older students feel a great deal of difficulty in preparing themselves for the civil service examination because they have not studied for a long time, along with technical difficulties. In terms of the quality of Internet e-learning lecture services, it is expected that there will be differences between the younger generation and the middle-aged and older generation due to technical factors and academic factors. Specifically, adult learners are more mature have more diverse needs and expectations, and before anything else, however, they have a sense of responsibility for home and work compared with regular college students. At the same time, they have a clear desire for learning according to specific goals. It has also been found that there are differences in the level of the use of learning strategies depending on the learners' gender, age, and academic background. Therefore, this study has a purpose of comparing the differences in the e-learning acceptance/satisfaction between the middle-aged and older generation and net generation on the basis of technical factors and academic factors by investigating differences in perception and satisfaction with the e-learning and by analyzing the value satisfaction according to age.
