Inclusive education has been expanding and stabilizing, allowing more students at-risk or with learning disabilities(LD) in general education classrooms, while their underachievement problem accumulates. The implementation of ‘Response to Intervention’(RTI) for preventing students at-risk to be LD has been limited by the lack of effective programs and low level of teacher professionalism. Therefore, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of
Education has recently shifted its paradigm from the traditional academic achievement oriented approach(e.g., support classes focused on repetitive paper-and-pencil activities to reduce the academic gap between students at-risk and nondisabled students) to an emotional-motivational approach (e.g., systematic assessment to identify the cause of underachievement and multidimensional supports to intensify motivation to learn), and has also implemented vast projects to enhance basic academic achievement (e.g., utilizing academic motivation scales, and operating learning centers). The importance of motivation to learn for students with LD or those at-risk
has been supported by numerous experts in the field of LD. Motivation greatly influences their academic, emotional, and behavioral problems. Despite this widely accepted notion, the fact is that tailored, differentiated, or individualized lessons to meet academic and motivational need of the students at-risk in elementary schools have not been normalized, and due to the lack of professional knowledge, guidelines, and teaching materials, instructors have failed to satisfy the diversity and difference of learning motivation in the students at-risk. As a result, there has been discussion about the application of “The ARCS Model”(Model of Attention, Relevance, Confidence, & Satisfaction),” a systematic combination of motivational and instructional designs to intensify the motivational aspect of the learning environment in order to improve
academic achievement and motivation for students with underachievement and/or undermotivation problems, in the field of LD. The ARCS Model synthesizes four components of motivation to learn―attention(A), relevance(R), confidence(C), and satisfaction(S)―and provides tools to assist motivational designs (e.g., design processes, worksheets, motivation measuring tools, motivational tactics checklist, motivational delivery checklist, etc.) for teachers to develop individualized and adaptive instructional methods to intensify an individual student’s motivation to learn through
problem-solving, heuristic approach based on the 10 steps in the systematic ARCS Motivational Design Process such as “audience analysis.” The ARCS Model has been proven to be effective in general education settings (e.g.,
improving both motivation to learn and achievement, providing teachers systematic motivational design framework), and has been widely used both
domestically and internationally. In contrast, in the field of LD, only a few researchers mention the necessity of applying the ARCS Model to instructional design for students with LD, and emphasize the need to verify the
effectiveness of the ARCS model in classrooms, while discriminating the specific support needs according to different subjects and disabilities. Thus, the purpose of this study was to test the effects of the application of the ARCS
Model to math classes on motivation to learn and academic achievement of elementary school students at-risk for LD, and to examine the structural relationship between the two dependent variables. The participants selected for this study were 206 students at-risk for LD in
total(103 each in experimental and control groups), ranging from 4th to 6th grade, in 24 elementary schools in Seoul(12 schools in experimental group, 12 schools in control group) and 24 teachers instructing the students at-risk in
their own school. The experiment was conducted in the following sequence: pre-test, intervention of 38 lessons for 14 weeks in after-school classes taken by the student participants, and post-test. The research procedure was carried out as follows: planning and developing lesson plans for the application of the ARCS model in the math classes, verification of content validity, the review
committee meeting, teacher training, pre-test, intervention committee meeting, intervention and fidelity evaluation, additional teacher training sessions, and
post-test. The methods used to analyze the collected data on scores of motivation to learn(Instructional Materials Motivation & Course Interest) and academic achievement on math were: 1) Multivariate Analysis of Covariance
(MANCOVA) to test the overall difference of the level on IMMS and CIS between the experimental (ARCS applied classroom) and control (traditional classroom) groups, and the difference and relative importance among four
subcategories, 2) Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) to test the difference of academic achievement according to the two groups’ instructional methods, and 3) A ‘two-step approach’ primarily analyzing reliability of the scale and then using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to determine the path from each group’s motivation(IMM, CI) to academic achievement. The findings of the present study are summarized as follows. First of all, regarding the entire and each of the four subcategories of both IMMS and CIS on math, the motivation level only by the instructional methods (ARCS applied vs. traditional) was significantly higher for the experimental group than the control group. There were no significant differences regarding the main effect of students’ grades and the interaction effect of their grades and teaching methods, which proves that ARCS applied
lessons were effective in improving learning motivation levels of the group of students at-risk for LD, regardless of their grades. The relative importance among the four subcategories that contribute to the main effect by the teaching methods was ranked from highest to lowest, Attention, Satisfaction, Relevance, and Confidence, for the level of IMMS, and Attention, Confidence, Relevance,
and Satisfaction for level of CIS in math. On the basis of this result, it was possible to formulate appropriate motivational tactics according to the relative importance of the four subcategories of ARCS applied classes, and also devise applicable instructional approach for each grade and four subcategories based on the heterogeneity of motivation to learn exhibited in descriptive statistics.
Second, regarding the math academic achievement, the experimental group ranging from 4th to 6th grades who attended the ARCS applied classes received significantly higher scores than the control group to verify that the ARCS lesson is an effective instructional method to improve academic achievement of students at-risk for LD, regardless of their grades. Also, due to the hierarchical
structure of math curriculum and the progress of classwork, test items of 4th to 6th grades or pre- and post-test could not be developed equally, and thus the descriptive statistics were examined to identify distinguished features according to grades and groups. As a result, this study could obtain information suggesting what kind of differentiated instructional methods are needed to meet individual students’ needs relating to undermotivation andunderachievement.Third, the path between learning motivation and academic achievement on
math for each group was analyzed. The outcome was that the experimental group, which took the ARCS applied classes, showed full mediating effects of CI between IMM and academic achievement in math, whereas the control group did not show any mediating effects. The two groups were identical in showing positive path between IMM and CI, and in displaying strong predictability rate by high effect size. Each group’s learning motivation, academic achievement, and their structural relationship can be explained by combining all the above results of this study.
The students at-risk for LD in 4th to 6th grades in the experimental group who took the ARCS motivation-enforcement classes displayed improvement in overall math motivation by IMMS and CIS, also in all the four ARCS
subcategories. Such changes were largely due to the attention(A) and satisfaction(S) in relation to IMMS, and attention(A) and confidence(C) concerning CIS. Their academic achievement in math also improved. The
increase in motivation by instructional materials raised subject interest, but did not directly result in improved academic achievement; it did so through full mediating effects of subject interest. If the experimental group continuously takes ARCS classes, the students at-risk for LD will ultimately lessen their problem of undermotivation and ameliorate their academic underachievement
problem. On the other hand, the control group took traditional classes focused on repetitive paper-and-pencil activities as before, and at-risk students in 4th to 6th
grades showed no significant change in motivation levels except a trivial increase in motivation towards instructional materials and subject interest. There was also no significant improvement in motivation to learn concerning
the four subcategories. These students showed only a minor―not significant―increase in academic achievement in math. In common with the experimental group, when their motivation towards instructional materials improved, the level of interest in the subject also rised, but neither did it lead to improvement in academic achievement nor caused any mediating effect of subject interest. If the traditional teaching methods remain unchanged, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will find it difficult to realize its goals of reinforcing learning motivation of students at-risk for LD coupled with improving their achievement levels.
Therefore, teachers must develop their level of knowledge and expertise based on the full understanding of the effectiveness of ARCS classes, so that they can skillfully establish motivational designs of instruction specifically for
students at-risk for LD. Especially, as previous studies show, the core of ARCS applied classes is on the construction of ‘adaptive·problem-solving·heuristic’
methods most apt for meeting the learning motivational demands of a specific individual student; hence the strengths and differential aspects of ARCS classes
must be applied correctly for students at-risk for LD by maximizing the application of ‘audience analysis’, ‘motivational design matrix’, ‘motivational
design worksheets’ suggested by the ARCS model. Furthermore, the stability and settlement of ARCS classes will be bolstered with the support, collaboration, and a shared accountability among schools and at
government-level. This study is significant in that it applied the proven the ARCS motivation model in teaching methods for students at-risk for LD in general educational classrooms, and is the first to verify the effectiveness of the ARCS model using structural equation modeling on the basis of real-world experiment results to define the path between motivation to learn and academic achievement in
math. Future studies can benefit from this by setting up research direction for enhancing motivation and achievement of elementary school students with LD
and those at-risk, and carry out studies from diverse angles. In addition, this study supports the modified educational policy presented by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education to heighten learning potentials by intensifying motivation to learn and overcoming underachievement problems of students at-risk for LD, and could provide the primary reference of decision making in
formulating future educational policies for those students.
